Skills and competencies contributing to the success of the business organization
Tim Cook was appointed as the new CEO of Apple Inc after the death of Steve Jobs.
The leadership qualities and skills of Time Cook enabled the business organization to
increase the company’s market value double as compared to Microsoft.
Leadership skills and competencies are described below:
Risk taking – One of the most important traits of a leader is risk taking and efficient decision
making in the organization. Tim Cook believed that risks can lead to failure; however,
without the possibility of failure, there can be no success (Perry 2016).
Collaborative in approach – Tim Cook believed in collaboration and cooperation with the
team members. This is a unique quality of Tim Cook. He appreciated different opinions and
viewpoints in solving a problem.
Diversity in leadership – The leader has faith in his leadership styles which is competent
enough to ensure betterment of the business and lead to the success of the business
organization (Perry 2016).
Management and leadership styles of Time Cook
Tim Cook implements a diverse leadership approach. He is a democratic leader and
implements Laissez-Faire leadership style. He provides opportunity for the members of the
business organization to share new ideas and opinions and provides authority to the
employees of the business organization. He inspires and motivates the members and
encourages them to take risks and initiatives (Mishra 2017). He also implements situational
leadership approach. He is composed of both supportive and directive dimension which is

implemented based on the current situation in the organization. Therefore, Tim Cook is an
inspirational leader, his leadership styles and approaches help to build a strong foundation as
a leader. For example, when the US government accused Apple of threatening the security of
the customers, Mr. Cook addressed the issue and provided legislation indicating his directive
stance (Mishra 2017). It is evident, that Cook does have a different visionary style as
compared to Jobs. He is not only focused on the products but also has a collaborative and
supportive approach which is highly effective for the present situation at Apple (Kahney
2019).
Recommendations to improve his leadership styles
Although, the leadership styles and approaches of Tim Cook have its own strengths,
critics are of the opinion that he lacks bold visionary styles of Jobs. Jobs had focused on
existing products and were highly autocratic in nature. This approach is contradictory to the
approach of Tim Cook. Tim focuses on cooperation and collaborative approach in decision
making process. This approach delays decision making in the business organization
concerning the presence of stiff competition in the market (Kahney 2019). Lack of bold
approach of the leader delays effective decision making. Therefore, it is recommended that
the leader must incorporate fast decision making in the organization considering the presence
of stiff competitors in the market. He must consider the opinions of the employees and
consider the most effective idea or opinion (Ceil 2018). This will enhance decision making
and foster positivity in the organization.
