The main objective of this report is to evaluate the effects of the behaviours of the
managers in a given scenario or condition on the behaviour of the individuals or employees of an
organization. Practical as well as applied recommendations will be provided in this paper
according to the condition of the issue of that given company, so that the behaviours of the
managers can be improved and positive effects can be happen to their employees. Selected
organization is Tesco, and the given scenario is to motivate the employees by the managers.
Thus, it can be said that motivating the employees of this groceries and general merchandising
retail company from the United Kingdom by their managers and the kind of behaviours that are
followed or imposed will be the main topic that will be discussed in this paper.
Brief Overview of the Company
As discussed, Tesco has been selected as the organization where the behaviours of the
managers on motivating their employees will be discussed and proper recommendations will be
provided according to effects received by the employees of this organization. Tesco is a
groceries and general merchandising retail company which was founded in the year 1919.
Headquarter of this company is in Hertfordshire, and almost 6,800 retail outlets are possessed by
this company across the world (tescoplc.com 2020). The nations where Tesco operates apart
from the United Kingdom are India, Poland, Ireland, Thailand, Hungary, Malaysia, Slovak
Republic and Czech Republic. Thus, it can be said that all the number of shops mentioned above
are spread over 11 nations across Europe and Asia. They are the leading groceries outlet within
the region of the United Kingdom, with enjoying almost 29% of the overall market share, along
with maintaining the leading position in Hungary, Ireland and Thailand (tescoplc.com 2020).

that managing and motivating a huge number of employees like this is not an easy task for the
managers of this globally reputed business entity. Retail industry, in this scenario, can be stated
as one of the most competitive business sectors among all other business sectors that prevail in
global business environment.
Management Behaviour on Employee Motivation
As discussed, the behaviours of the managers plays a vital role on motivating the
employees of the companies like Tesco. It can be stated that motivation plays an integral part in
retail sector, which is, as discussed is one of the highly competitive business sectors among all
others sectors (Otoo and Mishra 2018). The behaviours of the managers effects the employees
who are working on Tesco, and motivated employees are very important for the businesses like
supermarkets that are performed by the organizations like Tesco (Jaiswal, Pathak and Kumari
2017). The motivated employees will provide superior service to their customers, which will
help to maintain the leading position that is enjoyed by Tesco in the retail market of the United
Kingdom. Customers will love to visit the outlets of Tesco, and more number of footfalls will
automatically increase the market share and revenue earning for this retail company (Gautama
So et al 2018). The behaviour of the management of this retail business house is partly
democratic and partly autocratic, which totally depends on the market scenario that prevails
currently. The team based culture that is followed in this business entity clearly provides an
indication of the decision making process within the organizational culture, which is democratic
in nature.
Tesco uses a mixture of the role and the task culture, which totally depends on the type of
roles performed by the employees in the retail outlets along with the job performed by them

which are provided to them (Sen and Yadav 2016). The employees are motivated by following
this decision making process by the managers, and provide superior quality services to their
customers, which helps to maintain the customer base as well as the top position in the retail
market of the United Kingdom. But, there are some instances where it has been seen that some of
the managers of the retail outlets that are present within the British market. This has increased
the employee turnover rates for sometimes, and it can be noted that a minimum number of
employees are required to maintain the flow of the business operations that are performed by the
business house of Tesco. Failure of the areas of improvement by the managers for some of the
employees along with providing insufficient training to them has demotivated those employees
(Rahman and AL-Musalami 2018). To solve this, certain recommended actions need to be
followed by the managers of Tesco to increase the motivational level of these employees so that
they can improve the performances, which will help to maintain the satisfaction level of the
customers by providing superior service to them along with maintaining the overall productivity
of this company (Menachery and Venkatapathy 2016).
Recommended Steps
The first and foremost recommended action that need to be followed by the managers of
this business entity is to held regular sessions with all the employees of the Tesco outlets that
operates in the British market place. This will help to identify the areas of improvement of the
employees whom lacks motivational factor within themselves (Martinkienė and Vaikšnoras
2019).
Proper training programs and manuals need to be designed by the managers of human
resource department, which need to be implemented within the organizational culture of this
retail business house. The managers will take those classes, which will act as a motivational

factor to the employees. Relationships can be improved between the managers and the
employees through these classes, which will help to improve the performances of those
employees (Kalu and Okeke 2019).
Fun and stress-relief activities need to be held by the human resource department of
Tesco along with the managers, so that the extra burden in the form of stress can be removed
from all the employees and they can be boosted with involvement of their seniors or managers,
which will help them to improve the behaviours of the mangers along with the performance of
the employees of this retail business entity (Jayatilake 2016).
Conclusion
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that Tesco values their employees but
there are certain areas which need to be improved, which can be done by following the suggested
recommended actions. These actions will help to improve the performances of the employees
who lacks motivational power within themselves and possess issues with their managers. The
behaviours of the managers will also need to be changed which will be possible by
implementation of the recommended actions.
