INTRODUCTION
Healthcare industry is rapidly increasing day by day especially after the occurrence of the
recent pandemic Covid19. From this incidence people are now more aware about their health and
care process of themselves. Thus, this pandemic brings a lot of mental stress on the people and
leads them to harm their mental ability and health which overall started impacting their physical
body as well. In this study, a man whose name is Mark born in South Africa and relocated to
United Kingdom has suffered from the mental stress and had went to a psychiatrist for a review.
The case study has mentioned the detail where Mark was facing the mental health issue and
needs advice and proper care as well. Being a social worker, it is the responsibility to support the
Mark to enhance the confidence and motivation so that Mark can be able to live more
independently by understanding and achieving the set goals and targets.
Social worker is responsible for promoting the social change and development and supports
the people to solve the social problems (Howe, Kohli, Smith, Parkinson, McMahon and et.al.,
2018). Mark has no family as his marriage was already ended in 2009 from where he started
living alone and independently. He has nobody to look out after him where he was feeling more
conscious and anxiety which harms his mental health. The Human Rights Act 1998, law has
been announced by the government where the legislation is defining the rights and
freedoms fromwhich everyone living in the country UK can be entitled. However, the
government of United Kingdom has implemented some rules and legislation for the betterment
of the mental health care patient where “Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007”
provides the protection to the adult people of risk and harm and secure their life ( Li, Wang, Xue,
Zhao and Zhu, 2020). Also, the Mental Health Care and treatment (Scotland) Act, 2003 helps
and increases the rights of the people with mental disorders and protects their rights and supports
them to get the best treatment. This report will be an analysis of the areas from where Mark can
be able to get the best treatment plan for his addiction in order to support his mental health and
will provide the best solution for the betterment of life.
Overview of study
Marks was born in South Africa where he married in 1999 with his wife and the marriage
was ended in2009. After that he has spent the two years after the divorce in England and

resided in Scotland. However, has done different kinds of jobs such as engineer,
accountant, security and even sales person as well.
In this case of Mark who is 58 year old man born and raised in South Africa where he later
married with his ex-wife and then separated in 2009. This separation and difficult relationship
with his family led Mark live lonely life however Mark had good childhood and education that
helped him engage himself in work. Mark was employed in several occupations such as an
accountant, engineer and sales person when he was in moved to England. Mark invested his
earnings in a boat and started solo traveling towards north.
But, in the recent pandemic Covid19 has impacted Mark’s mental cognitive ability and
where at the boat he contacted with the person with using drugs. Thus, he may target by the
drug usage and leads them to not stay capable and affects the body and mental ability. He wants
a proper advice to get a drug recovery treatment from where he can be able to get cured
effectively and a good financial advisers to get recover mentally and financially as well. Mark
was identifying the ways from where he can be able to get the perfect treatment for a drug
recovery moment in possible manner.
Engagement
Social worker is a quite huge responsibilities and duties where they have to put their efforts
for implementation of the change in the society and promote the social welfare. (Reference?)
Being a social worker it is required to raise the voice against the activities and should adopt some
social work approaches which can help the society in definite manner (Rana, Mukhtar and
Mukhtar, 2020). The main purpose of describing the approaches is to reflect the ways to increase
the communication level and building relationship which will help Marks to recover in speedy
manner. Here, mentioning some approaches which is required to be adopted and implemented
which will help the Marks to get engage with the society in better manner.
Person-centred practice: Serving the services to the mental health patient the service provider
should be patient centred from where it will enable to watch the patient’s activity carefully and
can protect them from any injury and harm.
Strengths based approach: Being a service provider it is required to identify and focus on the
Mark strength which help him to develop the confidence and can recover in definite manner.
Mark has strength of living independently from where he can be able to achieve his set goals and

targets efficiently. It will also help him to get engaged with the local people and can perform
group activities while reside in Scotland.
Relationship based practice: A good communication and a relationship between the social
worker and user has to be perfect and effective as it enables the user to share the feelings and
situation in definite manner. Thus, the relationship with Marks should be quite good where I
have to communicate with him on daily basis in regard to his interested topic which will make
him comfortable with me and can share his feelings and emotions as well.
Narrative approach: Being a social worker I am required to keep the focus on Mark mental
health care implement the narrative approach to make him comfortable and encompasses the life
story and person’s experience in meaningful way. It will also allow the better engagement
between us.
Motivational interviewing: It is the process where patient can be able to involve with the
service provider and can enhance the motivation of them which is helpful for well-being.
However, Marks have also required having the counselling with the clinical psychologist who
helps him a lot in overcoming and reducing the mental issues.
As, it has been known that it is important to adopt the above mentioned approached by the
social worker where I met to many challenges while providing the effective care and services to
the Marks because of improper communication between us (Sheppard, 2021). By adopting the
engagement and social work approaches it helped me out to perform well and communicate with
the Mark in definite manner. There are many multi agency working in regard to providing the
health and mental health services to the patient where collected the information and knowledge
and guided the Mark to acquire the best healthcare industry and psychological clinical for the
best treatment and results (Nurjannah, Gani, Evendi, Syukri and Elisa, 2020).
Assessment
The process of assessment is the most important factor and activity to be considered by the
individual person and social worker as it allow them to keep an eye or a focus on the activities of
the patient from where they cannot be able to get harm themselves. Accordingly, in social
working process assessments refers as where the worker gathers and collects the information of
the situation of the person and assess it in careful manner. It also helps the social workers to
identify and evaluates the issue of the person and can solve the issues in effective manner. Being
a social worker I am having a responsibility of taking care of the Mark and identify the

appropriate solution from which he can again stay strong and confident and do not harm his
mental ability (Mancini and Sala, 2018).
Assessment is the first major stage where it is important for the social workers to consider
this as it will help them to understand the information and knowledge which a person or social
user suffered from. By examining the situation of the user or person will allow the provider to
understand and identify the relevant solution. According to the case study, being a social worker
I am required to assess Mark situation and gathers the information where I have to use and
implement some model and frameworks of assessments.
Questioning Model
This is a kind of model which is used by the social worker to obtain the information from
a person from where the worker can be able to understand the situation in detailed manner and
can assess the situation in appropriate manner which will provide the effective outcome. In this
process, the social workers ask the questions from the person from where the worker can get the
better understanding and information of the circumstances. As, per the study being a social
worker I am required to use this model for getting the information where I gather the information
from Mark and his psychiatrist about the entire situation which is helpful for me to identify the
solution. Implementation of the questioning model helped me a lot in getting the information in
appropriate manner. Along with this, I do not have to stick with anyone or particular model for
the assessment and required to choose another assessment model such as diagnostic model as
well such as exchange model of assessment.
Anti-oppressive practice
Anti-oppressive practise is a current structure of progressive social work which helps to
identify the psychosocial issues. An individual person is having a right and power of equality
from where they cannot be getting discriminated in the society (Rogowski, 2020). This practise
is implemented to improve the quality of life and well-being of individual and group of people.
However, there are different kinds of discrimination takes place by the people in the society
where Marks who has been suffering from the mental illness can get targeted by the society and
get discriminated.
Thompsons PCS model for anti oppressive practice
It has been already known that the discrimination is practised by the people in different
areas mainly it is consisted of three levels which has been described below:

Personal: At the personal level it is concerned with the individual views and ideologies where it
refers to the way where the thought and emotions can put the great impact on the inequality and
oppressions in the societies (Prandini, 2018). According to the case study, Mark wants a well
treatment to cure from the habit of smoking and taking the drugs where views and ideologies of
Mark should be identified by the psychiatrist in any possible way.
Cultural: At cultural level, the people are created through different consequences and can be
considered into good or bad impacts on the society.
Structural: This is the final stage where it deals with the socio-economic factors where the
support has been developed by a person as well as cultural norms.
However, being a social worker I am required to keep focus on the all essential areas and his
rights from where he cannot be get discriminated in the society. The above mentioned models are
the area of assessment which helps to identify and collect the relevant information.-
Planning
Now, after the assessment stage, planning process where it is the important process or part
of the entire report. Mark is suffering from mental illness and required a support so that he can
be able to live independently like before. Being a social worker I was responsible for
understanding his situation and taking care of his health and care from where he can be able to
get the best treatment and can cure speedily (Christie, 2020).
I had created a good relationship with Mark and have to make him comfortable so that he
can share his feelings and thoughts with me without any hesitation. Along with this, a motivation
is the important thing which I needed to provide him so that he can feel courageous and can feel
better. By the motivational interviewing I collected the information which helps to understand
the entire situation in effective manner (Reamer and Reamer, 2018). As, I was responsible I
guided him to work professionally without any hesitation and problem from where he can be
able to become financially stable by taking the help of financial advisor as well. Meeting with
the financial advisor helped him out to get the best ideas of being financially stable which also
helps him to get the cure speedily. Thus, these practices helped me a lot to meet the risk and can
overcome the risk in definite manner from where Mark will be able to live independently again.
CONCLUSION
The report has concluded the importance and role of social worker who plays a significant
and crucial role in the society. They are responsible for the welfare of the society and promote

the healthy social environment. The report has included the different areas which has to be
implemented for the help if Mark who is suffering from mental illness and issues after their
recent pandemic. However, the report has included the engagement, assessment and planning
process along with the different functions in detailed manner and obtained the effective outcome.
