1SUMMARY OF VIDEO ON MARTIN LUTHER AND ANTI-SEMITISM
The entire seminar can be summarised by the last comment of panellist Martin
Hauger, who is a theologist, High Consistory of the Evangelical Church in Germany as he
said- Martin Luther tells the Jews how to read the Old Testament of the Holy Bible instead of
listening to what they had to say about it (YouTube). There lies the problem. Hence, this
seminar aims to carry out meaningful discussion on how Anti-Semitism and Martin Luther
are linked together and have managed to change the course of world history by carrying out
the Reformation. It can be clearly stated without much debate and challenge that the legacy of
Nazi Germany during the 19th century and the mass murder of the Jews had its roots in the
ever-growing anti-Semitism sentiments in the hearts of the people (YouTube). Although the
year of 2017 marked the second half of the 400 years of the legacy left behind by Luther, it
was not until the second half of the 20th century that those who considered themselves
Lutherans and other Christians confronted their sentiments of being anti-Jewish in nature
(YouTube). The seminar essentially sketches the history which unfolded due to the
Reformation and that which followed the period. Although his initial years as a scholar was
led by the belief that Jews and Christians were relatives and they are made of same blood and
cousins who worship and have faith on the same God; this belief quickly took a turn as
Luther’s frustrations kept increasing with the Jews. In 1543, he wrote, “On Jews and Their
Lies”. It marked the beginning of Nazism in Germany and the eventual extermination of the
millions (YouTube). The seminar also discusses with all the panellists as they discuss
questions such as whether Reformation was good for the Jews and understanding the fact that
people often have lifted off passages from Luther’s works to support antipathy (YouTube).
However they panellists also claim the fact that the Lutherans leaders’ performance was
worse when it came to the holocaust in comparison to that of the Catholic leaders. Questions
have also been raised from the audience regarding the present state of reconciliation of the
Lutherans and that of the Jews and the nature of the encounter has been discussed. The

celebration of Luther’s movement which will surely have its effect on the ever-growing
number of anti-Semitism in Europe has also been questioned and discussed (YouTube). The
last and most important question of the seminar as regarded by all the panellists and the
mediator was whether theology and politics can be separated which has been beautifully
answered by Martin Hauger who says that irrespective of the fact whether one is a Jew or a
Christian, Catholic, the fact that they have faith on Jesus is what makes them come together
(YouTube). However, when the problem of choices occurs, there are surely politics of
choices are also involved in it. Hence, he wraps up the conversation by stating the words with
which this summary began- Martin Luther tells the Jews how to read the Old Testament
without listening to them (YouTube).
