Maryland's Student Healthy Weight Program has the mission to identify the children
in the elementary school who are at greater risk for obesity. This also consists of a team of
healthcare professionals who provide interventions to these children. The participants of these
program includes those children who are enrolled in the public elementary school, have a
BMI above 95%, are referred by the doctors and have signed a consent form
(Phpa.health.maryland.gov, 2020). The program is active currently in Baltimore County,
Frederick County, Harford County.
The program involves student, parent, doctor, nurse and teacher with certain defined
roles and responsibilities. This increases the scope of the program and allows the students to
participate in this and get fruitful results. The educational tools that are available in the
program are consistent with the aim and mission of the weight management program. It
provides “One Pagers” for the healthcare professionals, nurses, teachers and parents. This
allows them to understand and thus relate to the program.
The program is consistent to the idea of health, nutrition, and obesity of the children.
This is done by the various educational tool that covers physical activity, nutritional tool and
the wellness educational program (Phpa.health.maryland.gov, 2020). Apart from this, in
terms of lifespan development the program can include certain activities and workshops that
will help in the growth of the cognitive and emotional side of a child. This can be done by
taking the help of counsellors that will help in the mental analysis of the children. This will
improve the ability of the children to respond to the program as well as map the changes in
them.
