MATERNAL CHILDNURSING
Description of the event and the objectives
Maternal-child nursing is a specialty in nursing which involves provision of proper health care to
child baring women. Marternal-child nursing views the process of birth as a naturally occurring
life event rather than a normal medical phenomenon. The specialty thus entails provision of
prenatal care to expectant mothers as well as health care to mothers and their newborn babies.
Maternal-childnursing also extends to the whole family. Marternal child nursing will provide me
with essential skills in roles associated with management of high risk pregnancies. The skills
gained will be vital in assisting mothers during their hospital stay (Hooker, 2015).
The learning objectives include
• To use the process of nursing as a framework for the development and implementation
of a plan of care for mothers and their respective families.
•To analyse legal ethical as well as ethical issues applicable to the child bearing family
•To demonstrate an understanding of therapeutic communication methods to nurture
positive relationship between the nurse, family as well as the infant
•To utilize the referral process to aid in meeting the needs of the infant as well as the
mother.
•To identify the various drugs administered during the various stages of pregnancy as
well as their side effects.
•To propose available methods of contraception as well as their advantages and
disadvantages.

Feelings/ Thoughts
I will employ the Gibbs reflective cycle in assessing my experiences, feelings and thoughts about this
particular field in the nursing profession. This conceptual reflective framework will enable me to
describe, analyze and evaluate experiences in my profession (OAKES & BAKER, 1991).Additionally,
the Gibb’s reflective cycle will allow me to put my experiences into practices by allowing my reflective
process to inform my practice.
Analysis
Nursing consultants in the field of maternal child nursing will be vital in helping analyze the
various issues concerning maternal health care provision. Additionally a legal nurse consultant
will be required to offer legal advice on legal concerns applicable to the child bearing family as
well as practitioners in the maternal child nursing profession. The consultant will also help me
analyze various case studies which will improve my understanding of the various legal concepts
in the nursing profession. The nursing handbook will also aid in carrying out the project by
providing me with the guidelines pertaining the project. Literature materials such as Maternal
and Child Health Nursing: Care of the Childbearing and Childrearing Family will also be
relevant in this particular nursing specialty

MATERNAL CHILDNURSING
I will engage in discussions with classmates in order to gauge my level of knowledge. .
Audio visual materials would also be a good addition. Additionally, I will try out online tests on
maternal nursing as well as carry out self-evaluation tests. To complete the project, I will
document my findings in a detailed essay outlining what I have learnt in the course of the
project.
Conclusion
Maternal child nursing is a field that requires the practitioner to employ professional as well as
human skills in daily operation (Elliott, 2002).A nurse in this field is therefore required to have
top notch social skills to be able to relate with patients in need of maternal care. I believe that the
above project will make me a very proficient nurse in my area of specialty.
