Design and implementation of a communication system for Poor Quality Communication
Channels using MATLAB
INTRODUCTION
Communication systems obtain data or message signals from a sender. The message
signal is fed into a transmitter and the transmitter modulates the signal so that it can be
transmitted over the communication channel as chosen by the users. There are common phases in
the communication system namely the transmitter, the channel, and the receiver. The transmitter
receives the message and passes it through a mixer and it performs modulation of the signal
before sending it out to the antenna for transmission via radio signals or through a wired channel.
The transmitter is a collection of electronic components and circuits that convert the electrical
signals into a signal suitable for transmission over a given medium. The transmitters are made up
of oscillators, and amplifiers, tuned circuits and filters, modulators, frequency mixers, frequency
synthesizers, and other circuits.
The receiver section has amplifiers, oscillators, mixers, tuned circuits, and filters with a
demodulation or message detector that seeks to recover the original intelligence signal from the

modulated carrier. The system performs the modulation and multiplexing the electronic
techniques employed during the transmission especially where many messages are being
transmitted through a single channel. The modulation makes the information signal with more
compatible medium and the multiplexing allows the signal is transmitted concurrently over a
single medium.
Noise interferes with the transmitted information during the sending and receiving
process. It attenuates a signal or rather degrades it during the media of wireless transmission. It is
proportional to the square of the distance between the transmitter and the receiver. Noise is
random, undesirable electronic energy that enters the communication system through the
communication systems by transmitting through the communication medium and interference
with the transmitted message.
AIMS
(I) To design a wireless acoustic communication system with a speaker on one computer
and a microphone connected on another computer.

(II) To design a poor quality and noisy communication channel with non-ideal and non-
linear channel characteristics such as multipath propagation, propagation delay, and
ambient noise.
(III) To design and implement a system that achieves high bit rate throughput and reliable
transmission despite the transmission impairments.
SYSTEM DESIGN AND MODELLING
The first portion demonstrates the input from the sender. In this case we are projecting a
guitar music wav file to act as the message signal. The message signal is sent to an FM broadcast
modulator baseband and then it is passed through the channel to the receiver. At the receiver end
it is demodulated within the given frequency range and the information is check for errors as the
message is extracted from the signal received.
