How does the biography of Maya Angelou showcase the role of transformation and
change in making a positive difference in the life of a client?
Through her biography, it is evident that Maya Angelou was a positive person who detested
racism and never up fighting for the rights of others and the welfare of the women
community. She has authored numerous books which is inspirational in nature and aims at
influencing people to change their thought about many things. Her inspirational story can be
narrated to client to showcase the power of positivity and how the grit and determination can
help one to overcome any failure or crisis in life.
If you were helping Maya Angelou during the challenges and tragedies of her
childhood, how would you, as a helping professional, have addressed the concept of the
whole person?
The concept of Whole Person refers that an individual comprises 4 quadrants – body, mind,
heart and spirit. In order to become successful a person has to grow in all of the four
quadrants. (Robey, 2020) Maya Angelou had a difficult childhood with her parents getting
divorced when she was just three years old. She was raped by her mother’s boyfriend when
she was eight year old. She was tormented with the brutal killing of her rapist by her uncle
and this made her go silent for the next five years. ("Maya Angelou is born", 2019) Referring
to the concept of whole person, a person faces ups and downs in life but that should not stop
one to evolve both mentally and physically. One should take the challenges and tough times
as an opportunity to become strong, both mentally and physically to fight back. Further, the
spirit of a person should not be dampened because of any untoward incident happening in a
person’s life and should be taken as lesson instead. Last and not the least, because of the rape
Maya should not have restricted herself to love anyone as not all men are rapists.
