2EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Part 1
Relevant and Interesting activities
The lecture that was provided in week 5 was regarding the emotional intelligence of a
leader. The aim of the week’s lectures were to identify and develop understanding regarding the
emotional competencies of intelligent leaders and their differentiation from leaders who are
deemed to be unintelligent. The activities that I think were more relevant and interesting were the
ones regarding the competencies of emotional leaders, the consequence of low emotional
intelligence and emotional contagion. I have been able to understand that it is the role of the
leader of an organisation to shape the functionality and competency of culture of an organisation.
Thus, a leader should possess emotional intelligence as it is the deciding factor that separates the
nature of leadership from the types of leadership that are in effective. In order to succeed in
terms of leadership, the factors that determine the emotional intelligence of leaders should be
identified. Along with the latter, it is important to identify factors such as the results of absence
of emotional intelligence and emotional contagion. The aforementioned factors are relevant in
terms of my professional development, hence these are deemed to be interesting and relevant.
Timing allocations
In order determine and develop understanding regarding the highlighted activities, the
time allocation for each of the activities have to be identified and segregated. The three activities
that were selected have various other sub-division under them. Hence the activities that have to
be segregated according to the each of the components that re available in under each of the
selected activity. The activities that fall under the competencies of an emotionally intelligent

leader are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. The time that
would be needed for the development of the following skills are:
1. Self-awareness: 5 weeks
2. Self-regulation: 5 weeks
3. Motivation: 2 weeks
4. Empathy: 5+ weeks
5. Social skills: 2 weeks
There are various factors that are associated with consequences of low emotional
intelligence. It consists of aspects such intention, incompetency of the leaders, infidelity,
insensitivity, intrusion, institutional forces and inevitability. These aspects have to be identified
as they could hinder the potential of an organisation to perform the functions effectively.
The ripple effect of emotional contagion can be identified by using working on the
identified aspects for 1 week.
Integration of Topic
The topics that have been identified into one piece of data. The activities that have been
identified revolve around the concept of emotionally intelligent leadership. Thus, the factors such
as competencies of leaders in terms of emotional intelligence, the consequences associated with a
type of leaders who are not intelligent and emotional contagion are related. Skills such as self-
awareness, self- regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills of a leader determine the
emotional consequences that are associated with nature of motivation and productivity of the
people who are working under the leader. It has been found that the level of emotional
attachment that the leader has with the achievement of the organisational goals affect the other

employees of the organisation. If the leader has strong emotional affiliation and showcases
emotion while pertaining to the organisational attachment, the same would be transferred to the
employees who would show the same degree of motivation towards the fulfilment of the
organisation goals. The concept of emotional contagion states that the emotions of one individual
is transferred to the other individual. This implies that the behaviour that the leader would exude
would be transferred to that of the subordinates. However, if the behaviour of the leader is
deemed to be unintelligent, the same will be reflected in the orientation of the employees who
would carry out their roles in the organisation with similar level of intelligence of the leader of
the organisation.
Instructions that ensure topic facilitation
In order to carry out the facilitation of the topics effectively, the process would need to
incorporate proper functionality similar to that of the managerial functions. Planning,
organisation, leading and controlling are the basic managerial functions. The functionality of the
process would have to be carried out in a similar nature and it is needed to be ensured that the
activities are carried out in a systematic way. Proper planning would ensure that the task ahead is
clear and precise. It would be followed by the proper organisation of the efforts followed by
exemplary leadership in terms of pertaining to the viability of the purpose of the workshop. The
concepts that are associated with the aforementioned factors would have to be adjudged
effectively before catering to the people which are subject to receive the information regarding
the same. It would be the responsibility of the individual pertaining to deliver information
regarding the same topic to identify, understand and scrutinise the factors associated with the
factors which would be responsible for clear identification of the factors that are associated with
facilitation of the activities.

Potential Barriers
There can be various barriers to the successful implementation and the facilitation of the
activities that are have been planned and are to be carried out. One of the most important factors
that have to be considered for the implementation of the activities would be regarding the
effectiveness of the activities is smooth communication. It is important for maintaining the clear
pertaining of the ideas that are to be communicated in the workshop. It is crucial for transferring
the understanding of the same to the employees of the organisation. Proper development of
understanding regarding the same topic is another factor that is associated with the proper
implementation of the activities that are to be communicated. It can be said that it depends on the
ability of the teacher in developing understanding regarding a certain topic that helps the students
to understand the topic effectively. Attention from the part of the individuals who are subject to
the information of the workshop will determine the success of the workshop. The absence of the
latter also hinders the effectiveness of the activities that are to be facilitated. Thus, the presence
of inattention is said to possess the ability of catering to the success of the workshop.
Diversity of Activities
There are diverse concept under the activities that were selected. There are various
factors under the competence of emotional intelligence of such as motivation, awareness, social
skills, empathy and others. While one individual who is subject to self-awareness might be able
to related to relate to it better than the concept of motivation. Similarly there might be an
individual who would be able to able to relate to the motivation better than concepts such as
awareness or empathy. It depends on the knowledge and the desire of the individual to obtain
skills regarding the same. Hence, it can be said that the diverse concepts under the activities

Part 2
Final comments
On a concluding note I can say that I have been able to learn the topic regarding the aim
of the role of leaders who are emotionally intelligent and who are not. The competencies of a
leader who is emotionally intelligent was described in the workshop from which I came to know
concepts such as self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation and empathy and social skills. I have
been successful in developing understanding regarding the fact that the leaders of an organisation
need to cater to the above factors in order to be deemed to be a leader who is emotionally
intelligent. There are various consequences to an organisation and the employees and the leader
if the leader has low emotional intelligence. In such a case, there are consequences such as
emotional toxicity. There are various sources of emotional toxicity that have been identified as
aspects such as intention, incompetence, insensibility, institutional forces, Inevitability, intrusion
and infidelity. All the aspects of emotional toxicity were identified and were discussed in the
workshop. The time frame required for carrying out the said activities were outlines in terms of
tie that would be required to carry out the same effectively. I also came across the concept of
emotional contagion which is a behaviour that is characterised by the individuals of an

organisation being influenced by the behaviour and activities of individuals. The latter is
common in terms of leadership and is exuded widely in terms of catering to the diverse changes
that are carried out in organisations. I learnt that the emotional intelligence of the leaders effect
the emotional intelligence that the employees showcase while they are working in an
organisation. Thus, absence of presence of emotional intelligence in reflected back through the
emotional intelligence of the employees.
