With the changing business landscape in the global competitive environment, the retail
scenario in Australia has changed considerably. The retailers are now looking out for newer and
better ways to engage their customers so that they are successfully able to grab a larger market

to examine the changing trends of the retail sector in the country of Australia with the help of an
example of the Mc Donald’s food retail outlets and assess its impact on the business operations
of the retailers. This will be done by making use of various journal articles and peer review
articles. The latter half of the report will be providing recommendations based on which the Mc
Donald’s retail outlet will be able to compete with the other present in the industry.

countries at present. As of 2017, the company has more than 37000 outlets (Verhoef, Kannan
and Inman 2015). Along with their trademark hamburgers, the firm also sells cheeseburgers,
wraps, milkshakes, desserts and soft drinks. The company has very often received a backlash

mobile applications like Zomato and Uber Eats using which the consumer can get pricing as well

information has bought about a huge impact on the choices which are made about the customer
food preference. Secondly, the second factor as influencing the change in the retail food sector is
that the availability of online delivery (Thornton, Lamb and Ball 2016). As stated previously, the
major trend which is currently present in the given environment is the availability of the option
of home delivery.
Although various restaurants in the food and beverage segment already had the option of
home delivery, with the increasing presence of the online applications of Zomato and Uber Eats

consumers prefer to have the experience of the restaurant at the convenience of their homes. For

food delivery applications have stolen the show and they have been successful in engaging a
wider audience for their business concerns. Along with this, there does not to be a minimum
option plan in case the consumer orders using an online application system. However, with Mc
Donald’s, in case the consumer wants to order using their website, they will be required to order
at least minimum amount.

Along with the changing trends and the factors as discussed earlier, there has been a
considerable impact from the different international competitors as well. Previously, there
existed the presence of only a few international food retail chains as present in the country of
Australia. However, this has changed considerably and has had a negative impact on the
business. At present, McDonalds does not enjoy the fast food monopoly and there are various
companies like KFC, Domino’s Pizza, Hungry Jacks , Red Rooster, Pizza Hut, Nando`s and
Zambrero which provide intense competition to the company, Mc Donald’s. In addition to this
there are several smaller food chains as well which are local in nature but have been coming up
with competitive pricing as well as trendy menu options. This menu goes a long way in attracting
the target audience as they now prefer having authentic Australian food made from natural
ingredients and other such facilities other than having junk food from the trendy fast food
restaurant services. For this reason, the Mc Donald’s and its business has been impacted in the
following manner:
Decrease in sales: The sales of the Mc Donald’s has gone for a serious blow whereby the
sales and the units being sold have decreased considerably.
Decrease in outlet visits: The number of outlet visits have also been stated to be
decreased. Earlier, the footfall in the outlet used to be quite high, however, recently this is
