Discussion Questions
CHAPTER 1: GLOBAL HEALTH TRANSITIONS

How do medical practices and interventions affect your daily life? How do public health
policies and interventions affect your daily life? Medical practices and
interventions generally affect my daily life in different ways. They generally
improve my health. This is because I regularly check my weight to find out if am
obese or not (Agrawal, 2015). In case I not an increase in weight, I work hard to
maintain the recommended weight so that I don’t suffer from complications such
as diabetes and hypertension. Public health policies also affect my daily life in
many ways, one such policy is the sanitation policy that dedicates one to observe
cleanliness each time. This therefore affects the way I dispose waste products on a
daily life. Nutrition policies also affect my daily life as they recommend which
types of food I should eat and those that I should refrain from.
How do your consumer purchases affect the health of people who live in other parts of
the world? My consumer purchase affects the health of people living in other parts of the
world in many ways, one such effect is the increase in diabetes in other parts of the
world. As for me, I don’t buy fast foods since they are risk factors for diabetes (Kenny,
2017). If I don’t purchase them, chances are that they will be purchased by other people
in the world and this would lead to increased cases of diabetes. On the contrary, if I buy
healthy products like fruits, it can improve the health of other people since they will be
keen to understand why I consume them and they will also adopt the habit of purchasing

fruits and vegetables.
CHAPTER 2: GLOBAL HEALTH PRIORITIES
How long do you expect to live? What factors influence your prediction? As for me, I
expect to live up to 70 years. There are different factors that influence my
prediction. One of the factors is the fact that I eat a balanced diet. I always make
sure that I eat a balance diet every time. This is in line with studies that link a
balanced diet to long life expectancy. I also exercise regularly (Keusch, Kilama,
Moon, Szlezák, & Michaud, 2010) .I make sure I achieve the recommended
minimum 60 minutes of exercise and this associated with longer life .I also don’t
smoke nor take alcohol. This two aspects affect the length of life expectancy so
much and since I avoid all of them, I expect to live longer.
Read the list of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets and indicators. Which
targets within each of the 17 goals relate to health?
There are 17 sustainable development targets in total. Out of these, those that relate to
health include the Good health and well-being goal and the clean water and sanitation
goal. There are several water borne diseases such as typhoid and cholera and this usually
occur if the water used is contaminated (Rivo et al., 2018). The goal to have clean water
and sanitation would therefore improve the health of people since the water borne
infections would reduce drastically. The other goal of health and well-being actually

encompass all the aspects of health from primary to tertiary level. All the countries
should therefore strive towards achieving the SDGs.
