LITERATURE SURVEY
As per University of Birmingham, women who experience domestic abuse are nearly
three times as likely to develop mental illness. Academics at University of Birmingham have
identified a significant association between mental illness and domestic abuse in UK women.
There was a significant research which was done for this particular purpose. Through the
research, there were various types of findings which were identified. The findings were that
those who are experiencing domestic abuse are three times as likely to develop mental illness,
women who experience domestic abuse have three times more chances of history of mental
illness, this is the first study which shows a link between domestic abuse and serious mental
illness. Also, there is a huge discrepancy which can be found between GP practices and the
national data. Thus, it can be said that through the study the wide range of factors which create
an overall impact on the women and can cause domestic abuse can be identified and the right
measures can be taken so that the domestic abuse on the women can be reduced (Tardif-Williams
and et.al., 2017).
Further the research has raised various important questions and recommendations. The
common nature of domestic abuse leads towards public mental health burden which makes this
form of abuse very vast within the U.K. The vast nature of this type of abuse has seen a rapid
increase in these cases within the country. This therefore requires that an immediate attention
must be provided to such type of cases so that a solution can be identified highly effectively and
efficiently. This will provide the adequate support to the women which is needed by them so that
they are able to open up about these particular cases and are able to report them so that they can
solve their problems.
The research has been done on a wide range of patients who are likely to develop mental
illness as a result of the mental abuse which they have faced. Thus, In this way it can be said that
the patients will be able to make sure that they are able to effectively and efficiently manage
their needs and requirements in a proper manner. They will be able to ensure that they can open
up about the problems and issues which they are facing and thus in this way the appropriate
actions can be taken so that these particular problems and issues can be resolved (Naushad and
et.al., 2019).
Overall, it can be said that with an increase in the number of mental abuse cases it
becomes highly important that the appropriate attention is paid by women towards the mental

abuse and emotional trauma which is being faced by them. Therefore, In this way it becomes
very crucial that the women are able to raise their voice for this particular purpose which will
help them a lot in ensuring that they are able to find a solution for these type of problems which
are being faced by them in the right manner effectively and efficiently.
According to Refuge, it is quite important that recognizing abuse is quite important
particularly for the women. There are many women who face mental abuse everyday from their
partners and are not able to recognize it. Thus it becomes quite important for them that they are
able to identify the form of mental abuse which is being faced by them. In this way, they will be
able to make sure that the identification of the mental abuse can be done by them in the right
manner effectively and efficiently. This will help them a lot because through this they will be
able to make sure that they are able to identify the form of mental abuse which they are facing
from their partners so that the right measures can be taken to report it effectively and efficiently.
Refuge is an organization which operates in U.K. and is able to provide specialist support for
women and children who are experiencing domestic violence. Therefore, Refuge makes sure that
an adequate support is provided to the women and children who are experiencing domestic
violence. Also, since domestic violence comes under mental abuse this can be extremely helpful
for the women and children to open up about the type of mental abuse which has been faced by
them. In this way, they will be able to make sure that they can effectively and efficiently manage
their wide range of needs and requirements properly.
There is a lot of support which is available for the women and children so that they are
able to face the problems and issues effectively and efficiently. Thus, it becomes highly
important that the women and children are able to make sure that they can open up about the
mental abuse problems which are being faced by them and can ensure that they take adequate
level of support for these type of problems in the right manner. This type of support is provided
by the organizations through the arrangement of professional counselling and ensuring that the

abuse. It means the actions which can cause someone to feel demeaned or wear down someone's
self-esteem. In U.K., there has been a lot of increase in these particular cases. This is leading
towards a lot of problems and issues particularly for the women who are the worst-affected due

and depression problems among the women in U.K. This has only added to the different types of
problems which are being already faced by these women (Sickel, Seacat and Nabors, 2019).
Thus, In this way it can be said that being a part of abusive relationships creates a long-
lasting impact on the victims. Therefore, it becomes highly important that the women are able to
speak up against the abusive relationships which will be quite helpful in ensuring that this can
help in reducing the emotional trauma which is being suffered by them due to them being a part
of such a relationship (Szigethy and et.al., 2017). There are various examples of mental abuse
like bullying, withholding kind words etc. Thus these are the types of mental abuse which is
faced by the women in U.K. This therefore creates a lot of problems and issues for the women
and therefore creates an overall impact on them. Treatment is available so that these problems
and issues can be dealt with in the right manner. This can be helpful in ensuring that the women
