INTRODUCTION
Mental health is hugely the important aspect for the nursing in term of handling the patients
in perfect manner. The nurses have the major level of responsibilities for whole rafting the
everyday working life for coordinating and the implementing the patient cares. It is important
to provide proper treatment to mentally unhealthy people because it may create several
negative happening (Barry and et. al., 2019). There have been the importance of nurse in
health care as this will be especially impacting on patient’s mental health which have been
significantly undervalued in the health care industry and society at general perspective. This
report is based on case study of Bill who is homeless man sleep in cold outside. Bill has
mental health crises history who is discharged from acute inpatient mental health ward. In the
report, there will be discussion of the different events, emotions, thought and the learning
perspective which is been in influences by personal and individuals’ experiences. In addition
the report will be having the personal and professional experiences in order to handle the
situations if ever happen again along with how much development in needed.
EVENTS, EMOTIONS, THOUGHTS, LEARNINGS, APPLICATION
Public stigma is reaction which general population have to the people who are going with
mental illness. In addition to this, self-stigma is the prejudice mentally ill people turn against
themselves (Evans and et. al., 2018). Moreover, both self-stigma as well as public may
understand mainly within three components such as stereotypes, prejudice and
discrimination.
My immediate reaction towards Bill is to identify analyse the situation in different
perspectives along with identifying the reason he reacting over things and what are the reason
behind it (Fayyad and et. al., 2017). Along with this, then I will try to make him calm and
balance my inner feeling of becoming the threat of action he is performing. Moreover, Bill is
homeless and sleeping outside in the cold which also result in giving negative impact on his
health. In addition to that I too take care of myself as there mentally ill patients have the
maximum chances to become violent with absolutely no trigger. Because to this, his mental
health issue is increasing day by day which require to be treated in appropriate manner. I will
try to provide the patient empathy by proving him better food to eat and make the proper
communication with compassion, patience, and communication skills

As being the nurse having empathy towards patient is my self-obligations which is used as
the tool for becoming the successful nurse in handling the situation in the perfect and
stabilized manner. This overall situation of Bill make feel very sad and broken because he
was feeling cold and homeless. Along with this, Bill was going through mental illness issues
due to which he was shouting on other and said don’t look back people will take you with
them. This holds the clear threat and fear he is pursing in his mind of him being the patient of
the mental health wards (Bharadwaj, Pai and Suziedelyte, 2017). After taking treatment from
acute inpatient mental health ward, the mental condition of the patient is not worthy to live
among the normal people. Mental health will be helping out well if health care practitioners
will make the patient feel emotionally and responsibly well. In addition to this, feelings are
important while helping mental health patients in more effective manner (Golightley and
Goemans, 2020). Because emotions will provide assistance in uplifting mental health of
individual within effective manner and assisting individual health in better manner. Hence the
patient is actually struggling for the specific diagnoses which can usually the input from the
healthcare professionals and make the situation better for bill. A few studies shows mental
illness can leads to depression and anxiety and people can harm themselves or even commit
suicide (Veale, J. F. & et. al., (2017). So it is important to put emphasis on Bill’s mental
health.
As per the thought of being a nurse the stigma of having the mental illness in the
community have the negatively effecting the mental, emotional and the physical health of the
people like bill (Moxham, L. 2018). This overall situation of Bill makes me feel very sad as
being homeless and suffering from the mental illness can make him have the experience of
public embarrassment, anxiety, depression and the isolation. Stigma need to stop for making
communities and community member healthier and safer (Levecque and et. al., 2017). Bill
was going through mental illness issues due to which he was shouting after treatment from
acute inpatient mental health ward. Hence, I have the believes that there should be stoppages
to avoids the public stigmas as it causes the individuals there to have the dropping out of
treatment and the avoid there entirely fear of being associates with the negative stereotypes.
According to MhH program (Mental health and homeless program) people who are homeless
have higher rates of mental illness than the general people, which can lead to homelessness
(Francis and Michelle, 2014). People who are Homeless cannot get sufficient amount of
individual’s basic needs. It also exposes person to unpredictable and risky environments. In
short, homelessness is not only about absence of physical shelter but it is also dehumanising,

and create dangerous circumstance in which individuals can leads to violent events. (Francis
and Michelle, 2014).
Nurses have been holding the trusted roles in the society which is helpful in influencing there
changing the public perceptions about the mental illnesses. I have the basic learning that’s
what has happened with Bill, for his situation he need the proper medications. But having the
elimination of the mental health stages have the need to be holding strong view about
mentally ill people. Bill has mental health crises history which is needed to be properly
analysis of being discharged from acute inpatient mental health ward. In addition to this,
reaction of each and every individual towards mental health person is totally different as
someone gets attached emotionally as well as some people react to them in negative manner.
This may result in getting their mental health worse day by day. Bill has half drunken bottle
of wine in his hand so I made assumption that he would be drunk. Even studies shows that
Mental illness has higher risks to lead people towards increased alcohol consumption
(Williams, 2018). Bill was shouting “Watch your back or they will get you” could be a result
of alcohol consumption or un-treated mental illness as per his past medical history. People
with mental illness may have significant physical illness (De Hert et al. 2011). In Bills case
nurse need to consider his physical fitness too as he looks dishevelled and cold.
It is important to provide proper treatment to mentally unhealthy people because it
may create several negative happening. As the part of application, I have professionally and
personally experienced such as exotic case by the Bill make me aware regarding their sullen,
troublesome and unsociable behaviour of patient may be clear signs of mental illness. Nurses
must have positive attitude towards mental ill patient as it can improve patient health
condition in timely manner and also ensure patients are treated with respect and dignity
(Chambers et al, 2010) I will be adopting the significant level of strategy such as the without
panicking in will try to have the assessing the patients mental states and establish the better
level of communications and busily there storing level of relationship in order to gains the
truest of the persistent perfect manner. Along with this I will also try to use the languages of
consideration and provide the sensitive patient centre care. I will also have to gain knowledge
from mental health professionals regarding the mentally ill patient to care patient in better
way. Because may be Bill’s mental health issue will increase day by day which require to be
treated in appropriate manner. If I have to treat Bill as a nurse than it is important to build a

sense of trust and a connection to develop a space for discovery and healing within the
context of a genuine and transparent working relationship (Francis and Michelle, 2014).
CONCLUSION
After going through overall discussion, it has been summarised that it is important to
provide proper treatment to mental health people in proper manner without any assumption
and judgement because it will improve the productivity of the patient like in case of Bill as
well as allow them to focus on daily task and give motivation to get things done within timely
manner. In addition to this, reaction of each and every individual towards mentally ill person
is totally different as someone get attached emotionally as well as some people react to them
in negative manner. This may result in getting their mental health worse day by day
(Moxham, L. 2018). So nurses must have positive approach, show empathy, respect and build
trust for patient like Bill to build professional and therapeutic relationship which gives patient
comfort, So that health professionals can get desired outcome.
