INTRODUCTION
Cultural diversity is important in the workplace of an organization because it promotes
better decision-making as well as strategy development (Godfrey and et.al., 2020). Apart from
this, it also ensures that the work environment is positive as well as healthy. A range of ideas and
expertise enables the ones to learn from a more numerous series of co-workers. This is a
reflective report on my own experience of culture and diversity in the mental health work
environment and will provide the readers with a better understanding of the importance of the
cultural diversity.
MAIN BODY
My Own Culture
I belong to the British culture wherein me and my family speak English as our native
language. I believe that the background of a person significantly impacts the people who belong
to a different culture or background. This is because different people have different backgrounds
and they belong to different cultures. I have many experiences of working as part of a team for
different teams. This helped me in developing various skills such as teamwork as well as
different ways of approaching a problem (Howard and Ulferts, G.W., 2020). The Australian
culture is different from various other cultures and I believe that my culture has impacted the
Australian culture that have come together to bring about a positive change on the whole. This is
because I believe there are a lot of people belonging from the United Kingdom who either work
in Australia or have settled down in the country. The change is positive in my viewpoint because
organizations get to work with different people who belong to different cultures and have a
different approach to different situations. I believe that there are different social factors such as
age, income levels, educational levels etc. that have directly affected my culture. This is because,
for instance, the education system is very different from that of the United Kingdom.
Diversity in the workplace
I believe that diversity in the workplace is very important because it allows the
organization to conduct its operations in an efficient way as well as come up with new product
ideas. The workplace organization that was assigned to me was diverse in terms of its culture as
well as the recruitment methods that were adopted by the human resource manager. There were

different departments with various staff members, each of whom had specified responsibilities.
By diverse, I mean that people belonging to different age groups, genders as well as cultural
backgrounds were hired by the company. The management of the organization believed that
having a diverse workforce promotes better decision-making as well as eliminating any cultural
threats that can affect the business performance. on a scale of 1-10, I believe that the
organization can be ranked as 8th in its competency (Rogers, 2020). This is because the managers
are always encouraging the employees to boost their productivity as well as competency. The
organization follows the Workplace Gender Equality Act, 2012 to ensure that the workers are
competent. In order to ensure that the workplace is culturally safe, the company promotes the
recruitment of people from different cultures and backgrounds.
PERSONAL REFLECTION OF WORKPLACE PRACTICES
When I worked at the organization, in order to show that I respect and value people
belonging to different backgrounds, I would participate in the different cultural activities that
were conducted at the workplace. Apart from this, I also interacted with people whose culture
and backgrounds were very different from my culture. This helped me in gaining more
understanding about their backgrounds in an effective manner. I have the ability to build
professional relationships with people and I think my interest in interacting with different people
such as colleagues as well as clients would encourage a culturally safe work environment for the
staff members. One of the various limitations that I encountered while working with people from
different backgrounds is the language problem (Verkuyten and Yogeeswaran, 2020). This is
because different people speak different language and this can sometimes affect the
communication process between two people. Apart from this, one of the other limitations was
developing an initial understanding of how different people approach a particular problem. Since
I speak English, which is spoken as well as understood by most people can help in easing out my
communication with other people.
CONCLUSION
It can be concluded that cultural diversity is important in the workplace and can help in
improving the performance of a business. Promoting cultural diversity within the place of
business enhances crew performance because: It allows employees to learn and develop with the
aid of sharing each other's experiences. Employees from distinctive backgrounds have interaction

with each other. It enables them to give you fresh thoughts. A culturally various workplace
empowers human beings to develop their competencies and talents.
