#MeToo Movement: Discursive Analysis of Sexual Harassment Impact

This report investigates the #MeToo movement and its impact on society, particularly focusing on sexual harassment in the entertainment industry. It explores two research approaches: phenomenological and discursive. The phenomenological approach studies the experiences of victims through social media observation, while the discursive approach utilizes interviews to understand the diverse impacts of sexual harassment. INTRODUCTION
With the increase in participation of women in entertainment industry their sexual
harassment and abuse have increased like unwelcome sexual behaviours, request for sexual
behaviours etc. which affects the freedom of women and is also against their dignity in society.
This report investigates the #MeToo movement which started against the sexual harassment so as
to determine its impact on the society.
PART 1
1) Phenomenological approach
This is a qualitative form of research which help in studying the psychology or experience
of people so that the impact of certain issues on them can be studied in detail. With reference to
the #MeToo movement the common experiences of the group of victims of sexual harassment
can be studied by examining their experience in entertainment industry and also at other places
of work. This approach can help me in answering the questions like what it is like to experience a
particular situation so that a deep information can be gained (De Bellis and et. al., 2016). The
method which is used by me so as to collect the data under this research method is by the way of
observing the activity of people on their social media accounts like posts protesting against
sexual harassment on their twitter handle, Facebook and Instagram accounts etc. so that the
number of people affected by sexual harassment can be determined. Their social media accounts
will help me in gaining a deep knowledge about how much have they been affected by sexual
harassment and the impact which has been created on the. Their #MeToo posts on social media
can help me in analysing the number of people who have been affected by sexual abuse at work
places by their participation in the movement.
I selected this method of collecting the data as people belonging to the entertainment
industry are most active n their social media accounts which can help me in getting an
approximate number of victims who have participated in the movement. The participants that i
will choose for this research will be mostly from the entertainment industry and i will observe
their social media activities. I will analyse the data by observing the impact which has been
created on the people due to sexual harassment that has influenced them to get involved in the
movement.
2) Discursive approach
This approach of research can help in exploring the impacts of researched phenomenon on
diverse human beings and analysing the impact of phenomenon on different individuals. Through
this approach a qualitative information can be gathered about the impact of sexual harassment of
individuals at their place of work (Falcone, Morone and Sica, 2018). This approach will help in
gaining a deeper and broader idea about the thoughts, intentions and motives of people based on
the topic being researched. This approach can help me in gaining a even better idea about the

impact of sexual abuse on people along with the variations in which it has impacted people
differently. I will collect the data under this approach by the way of interviews so that the
experiences of people regarding sexual harassment at work can be known in an efficient manner.
This will also help me in observing the rate of impact which has been created on them by this.
The level of their support towards the #MeToo movement can help me in determining their level
of their anger against sexual abuse done at the workplaces. The method of interview selected for
data collection can help me in getting face to face answers from the victims so that their actual
emotions, expressions, thoughts etc. can be judged which will help in drawing appropriate
results. This method will also help me in developing a broad understanding about why the
movement started and how many people support the movement.
I will select the participants for collecting the data from the entertainment industry by
interviewing the victims and supporters of the movement which can help me through my
research. By conducting direct interview actual data can be collected and the differences in the
impact of researched topic on different individual can be studied in detail. This method of
research thus help in developing a deep knowledge about the topic and their impact on
individuals which can be judged based on their experiences.
3) Approach which must be chosen
The approach that i will select for conducting the research on #MeToo movement which is
based on the human experience of sexual harassment at workplace specially in the entertainment
industry is discursive approach. This approach help in developing a deep knowledge about the
experiences of humans with the topic being researched and studying the level of impact on
different individuals (Soltani and et. al., 2016). In the phenomenological approach data is
collected by merely tracking the reaction of people so that the impact of a certain phenomenon
individuals can be known. This approach does not give a complete information about the impact
of certain topic on people and also no comparison of experiences of different individuals can be
done. In the discursive approach a broad view on the experience of individuals can be created so
that a detailed research can be conducted which will help me in interpreting best results.

individuals in a different manner so that an overall view about the topic can be created. Thus the
approach selected by me is an efficient one which can help in gaining effective results and
completing the research in an efficient manner.
4) Advantages and disadvantages of discursive approach
The research approach which is chosen by me so as to conduct this research is discursive as
this will help in increasing the reliability and authenticity of data collected which will help in
drawing effective conclusions. Following are the advantages and disadvantages of using this
approach to conduct the research:

The quantitative method can help in collecting actual facts and figures which can be easily
represented on graphs, tables so that easy calculations and interpretation can be made (Taira,
2016). however this method only help in collecting data based on closed ended questions which
does not help the researcher in building an insight and develop a deeper knowledge on a topic
which is based on human psychology.
CONCLUSION
From this report it can be concluded that in order to gain a better insight on the matters that
affect humans qualitative method of data collection must be used so that a deep knowledge can
be generated and open ended questions can be answered.
