Michelangelo is considered to be one of the most famous Italian sculptor, painter and
even a poet who belonged from the High Renaissance period. Michelangelo has contributed
greatly to the field of art by giving people beautiful sculptures and paintings. This paper will
focus on one of his magnificent creations, Pieta.
The Pieta is a sculpture which was beautifully carved by Michelangelo and which
currently is situated in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City.

The sculpture is a visual treat to the eyes because of the intricate details he has
presented and especially the theme the sculpture depicts. The sculpture shows Virgin Mary

holding the body of Jesus Christ after he was crucified. The sculpture beautifully represents
the emotion of Virgin Mary which is quaint yet sad. Pieta is made of Carrara marble and has
been carved beautifully by Michelangelo. It is one of the most celebrated pieces of artwork in
Rome (Lavin, 2019).
During the Renaissance period majority of the Renaissance artists like Leonardo da
Vinci used to favor the shape, pyramid which could be seen in many of the sculptures and
which can also be seen in the sculpture as it can be seen that the two bodies together have
been carved in such a way that it gives the shape of a pyramid.
Looking at the sculpture brings sad emotions because it portrays the emotions and the
hard time for a mother when she loses her child. Michelangelo was known for sculpting in a
way which would make the sculptures look lifelike. Michelangelo is seen to make Mary look
beautiful and young and give people a different perspective to her beauty. The face is
exceptionally sculpted which shows the sadness in her face and yet calm and detail has been
given to the cloth where he has sculpted each drape intricately.
The figure of Christ has been depicted beautifully which shows the exact moment
after he was crucified by prominently showing the ribcage which shows how weak he had
become and the body which looks frail. The sculpture according to me also shows the
courage and the strength of a mother which he has portrayed by the way Virgin Mary despite
of being sad is yet strong and his holding her son in his lap after his demise. The work is seen
to have a perfect balance of the ideals and characteristics of the art of Renaissance period
which is naturalism and classic beauty.
According to me, Pieta creates a somber mood however the detailed lines that have
been used in the composition give the sculpture life as well as energy. When looked at the
sculpture closely, it can be seen that the clothing of Virgin Mary has been given many drapes

and lines which go in various directions however, the body of Christ has very few lines that
are distinct which I feel emphasizes on the lifelessness of Christ.
The Pieta is one of the most famous and notable works of Michelangelo. This
sculpture shows various emotions in one frame and tells the story of Virgin Mary and Christ.
The sculpture has been beautifully carved and has been given attention to each and every
detail from the face to the body and also the clothing which has given the perfect finish to the
sculpture. Pieta is an exceptional piece of art which can be viewed and thus it has gained so
much popularity among the people and had helped in the growth in the career of
Michelangelo because of his unparalleled talent.
