INTRODUCTION
The Millennium Dome is considered as simply as The Dome which is the real name of a
big done shaped building that originally used to house the Millennium experience, a huge
exhibition celebrating the initiating of third millennium. It is famous as the ninth largest building
around the world by functional volume. This is located at the Greenwich Peninsula at the South
East, London, United Kingdom. The exhibition opened for the public from the 1st January 2000
to the 31st December 2000 (Allen and et.al., 2016). The respective exhibition was hardly political
as well as attracts scarcely half of the 12 million audiences which are forecast by its sponsors, so
it is announced by the press that project get failed. The aim of developing this project is to
determine issues behind the failure of the project related to the Millennium Dome. In respect of
this topics covered are related to the project management and its scope and implementation.

MAIN BODY
Overview of Project management
Project is considered as series of tasks which are need to be accomplishing for reaching
of a specific goal or outcome. It is also determined as a set of inputs as well as outputs which are
required for the attainment of desire goal or objective. A project can be developed in several
ranges which start from simple to the complex as well as it can be managed by an individual or a
group of individual. An organization need to develop effective project so that they can develop
strategies accordingly and attain their desire goal successfully. Furthermore, project management
is determined as application of a procedure, skills, methods, experience and knowledge in order
to attain particular project aim. Project management need to be done according to the criteria of
the project acceptance along with the agreed parameter and time duration. Respective
management also has final deliverable which forced to be finite budget as well as time duration.
The proper plan is necessary for each and every project that can be determined through the
situation of The Millennium Dome as it gets fail because their no proper plan for the project as
well as this will leads to huge loss to government as well as society. According to press the
reason of failure of respective project is lack of vision of management team, poor execution, not
able to manage expectations as well as management also get fail to plan effective for the post
event disposition of the location (Chiponde, Gledson and Greenwood,2019). In addition to this
according to study the main cause of the project failure of The Millennium Dome is that, from
the initial stage respective project is driven by the politicians not by other professional of
commercial or business sector people. Along with this, another main cause of the failure of the
project is funds or financial difficulties, as government also face situation related to lack of funds
then in that situation they get funds from society or public. This show that the team who is
managing the project related to The Millennium Dome not conduct planning properly due to
which time, funds and resource get wasted (Reason for failure of Millennium dome, 2002 ).
Failure of project vs failure of business
Failure of Millennium Dom was just a failure of the project; it has nothing to do with the
failure of the business at all. As looking at the definition of business in context of project
management, it is regarded as group of project are performed in the organization to run a
business, failure of any projector success used to bring good sort of impact on the business but it
does not mean that failure of any one project or success of any one project is overall related to

the success or failure of the business in the long run. So for the same reason the fall of the project
does not mean that Anschutz Entertainment Group owner of the dome has also failed overall. It
can be said that one of the project of Anschutz Entertainment Group has been failed
Major issue related to fall of project and alternative action
Millennium Dome is a type of the project which was a setup by John Major under the
government. This project was to be started by 1st January 2020. In the starting stage of the
project it was a small prospect which was constructed in real to celebrate the millennium third
incoming. It has to be opened as a execution and showcase the same to be opened for all the
public to view throughout the year 2020.
As explained in the above paragraph that these project was started on the smaller scale
but in the year 1997 the project of the company has rapidly grown in size as in the year 1997
there was changed in the government of the UK (Lehmann, 2016). The government which was
elected was controlled by Tony Blair and his government has provided good sort of funding in
regards of project has dramatically enhanced. This has eventually created a good sort of hype in
the people of UK that there will be a good dome which is will be inaugurated and all the
individual in the market as there was good hype in regards of structure of dome in the market. As
a reason there was a good reason behind having good hype in the market. Tony Blair has also
supported the hype by passing on statement “a triumph of confidence over cynicism, boldness
over blandness, excellence over mediocrity”
As explained these project was looking very good in the initial stage, so what went wrong? It can
be better be understand by going through the project management theory of 4 stage of project
management and understanding the different issue in that stages and what were the alternative
which can be taken by owner at that point of time.
Project Initiation: It is the first stage of project management it has been identified that
these project was very good at the initiation stage but the issue which was faced by the project
was that there was more than enough political interference which was seen. As at the time of
incorporation of idea of project government which was there has different point of view of the
project at the same time in the year 1997 the government was changed, these has brought variety
of changes in the project of the company in term of money, scope and size of the company these

has brought the variety of negative impact in term of the confusion which has been created in the
organization. Understanding the difference is can be understand by understanding the view point
of both the government toward the dome, as johns government has understand these project was
to unite the nation on the eve of the new century as for the same reason the project was started at
small scale and also by allocation lesser amount of money toward the same At the same time
Tory government has understand the project as a one who will be offering the people shows in
the nation which will be highlighted to frame the new image of Britain. It would be celebrated as
“New Britain” (Lin and Huang, 2020). So the first issue which was identified was not clearance
in term of Aim and objective of the project in any of the context. As per the principle of project
management one of the first and most important part of any of project management in the
organization is to have a very clear purpose and Aim & Objective of project. There were many
different alternatives which would have taken place to avoid the same issue which is being faced
by the organization in real . Some of the alternative of such a issue is as follow:
Conducting a feasibility study: Conducting a feasibility study for the scope and idea of
Dome would be one of the best way through which organization would have able to overcome
the same issue very easily in the organization. Reason for the same is that as per the theory of
project management it is the in build process in idea selection to have a feasibility study in
regards of objective selected for the project. So conducting a feasibility study would have helped
the organization in investing the money in better way to overcome variety of issue.
Better market research: It is another alternative which was there to avoid these sort of
issue in the organization, as it has been identified that if the organization would have conducted
the better market research in the market, it would have definitely help the organization in
overcoming the issue of setting up of good Aim and objective, these would have helped the
company in bringing good sort of clarity in project manager in terms of having the knowledge
what are the different decision which has to be taken by them in the project.
Project Planning: It is the next stage of project management; it is the stage which used to define
the variety of the different step which will be taken by project team in general to achieve the
objective of the project in the better way in the organization. In the case of Millennium Dome
project it has been identified that project team was having a good project plan but the plan which
was help by the project team was very short sighted in the nature, these has played a very crucial

role in falling down of the project in the long run. As the plan which was developed by the
project team was not having the aftermath of the project as a consideration. For example, project
team was not having the clear idea about what will do of Humongous building after year 2000. In
the simple words it can be clear identify that all the thing that is contingency plan, contract all
are in the air there was a proper lack of professionalism at all. There were variety of different
type of alternative in front of organization to follow; some of the alternative which may be used
by the organization is as follows:
Contingency plan: It is one of alternative which may help the company in overcoming
the variety of the different issue in the better way, as having the contingency plan in the
organization would have helped the company in getting the better number of alternative when
there was any sort of confusion in the organization (Zid, Kasim and Soomro, 2020). This would
have eventually helped the company in reducing the amount of loss as well for the company, as it
would have eventually helped the company in getting good response from the company in the
long run.
Contract Signed: It is another important alternative which would have taken by the
organization at the time of project planning; it eventually means that providing authority to all
individual who is involved in the project, these has eventually helped the company in finding out
the fault and variety of the issue at the time of occurrence itself . On the basis of the same variety
of different type of action can be taken in the project to overcome the same
Project Execution: It is third stage of project this stage of the organization went well as
the project was deliver in the best way it could have been offered in real but the real issue which
was started was started after project was delivered to the individual. As it has been identified that
the project was not able to bring good amount of pay back from the customer in the form of the
revenue. As it was identified that for maintaining the building it will require 1 Million GBP and
the dome was not able to bring the same amount of the money back from the tourism in the form
of visitor, these has created the variety of the issue for the project. Different alternative in front
of the organization is as follows:
Promotional activity: Performing variety of different type of promotional activity in the
organization would have helped the project in seeing the better number of visitor in the

organization and would have eventually has presented the good image of the project in the
market. This would have eventually resulted in seeing better result in the market. For example,
advertising the dome in the better way in front of the other in the market is very important for the
business as it would have eventually help the organization in seeing better number of tourist and
eventually enhanced the amount of the revenue gather by the individual (Chen, Kang and Lee,
2017).
Signing hand with different tourism regulator: It is another alternative which has to be
taken by the individual in the market as it would have help the company in seeing better result as
compare to other individual in the market. As if the organization would have signed the hand
with different agency who used to assist customer in traveling London, would have helped the
organization in seeing better number of the consumer toward the dome.
Project Closure: It is the last step of project in which the project of the company is
closed. In the case of Millennium Dome the project was closed in 31 December 2020 as it was
getting very difficult to maintain the same in the organization as well (Zafar, 2019). In the
current scenario the project of the company is given on the lies by the government, this has been
used as auditorium who has organized the variety of different type of sport and big event in the
UK. Name of the UK is O2. There was only one alternative which was available in front of the
project manager or the government. Is just selling the project in the market, this would have
eventually have helped the government in covering the variety of the cost of the company in the
better way.
Expenses of project
The project of the company has cost 789 million GBP in total to construct the same. This
was the total amount of loss which has seen by individual in the market. Also there is good sort
of loss which has been also seen in maintaining the same. As Project has also cost 1 million
pound in mainintaining the same. Looking at the valuation of the cost which in the year 2020 is
£1.38 billion.
CONCLUSION
After going through the above report it has been concluded that overview of different sort of case
study in regards of failure of the project in the market. After that report concludes variety of different type

of issue which is related to failure of the project as per variety of different stages of project. In the end
report concludes variety of cost or expenses which has been incurred in the project management.
