AI Summary
This presentation delves into the application of mindfulness strategies within mental health nursing, examining Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) and their effectiveness in managing stress, anxiety, and other psychological conditions. The presentation provides an overview of mindfulness practices, their historical development, and various adaptations. It discusses the benefits of MBIs for both healthcare providers and patients, including improved stress control, reduced burnout, and enhanced quality of care. The presentation links the topic to mental health nursing by exploring the relevance of mindfulness to clinical interventions, reflective practice, and the development of essential attributes for nurses. It also addresses potential challenges and limitations, such as situations where mindfulness may not be appropriate. The presentation concludes with questions for group discussion and a comprehensive bibliography of relevant research and literature.

DISCUSSION
The use of Mindfulness strategies in Mental Health Nursing
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are organized
therapeutic strategies used in patient education and that
utilise meditation techniques (Kristeller, & Wolever, 2010).
Mindfulness strategies were first developed in 1970s,
currently there exists multiple adaptations (Russell, &
Siegmund, 2016)
Studies have shown that mindfulness based techniques are
effective in the management of stress and other physical
and psychological diseases (Frank et al., 2015; Abbott et
al., 2014; Botha, Gwin, & Purpora, 2015).

THE AIM OF THIS PRESENTATION
1. To consider more deeply the impact of
social inclusion and its opposite, social
exclusion, on health and illness - We should
remember one of the fundamental lessons
of this research is that social exclusion has
more than a psychological impact on health,
it can have a very real physical impact also.
2. After a consideration of social exclusion
in general we can look at an example of the
social exclusion effect of globalisation in
particular situations

DISCUSSION…
Provider wellbeing: MBS significantly control stress
levels, reduced anxiety, improved resiliency and
mindfulness points at the end of the intervention.
– It also relieves one from burnout symptoms, offers
better relaxation (Paholpak et al., 2012; van der Riet,
Levett-Jones & Aquino-Russell, 2018).
Improve quality of healthcare:
– Redirects negative thinking and reframe challenging
circumstances
– Nurses can gain from mindfulness practice through
increased focus, awareness and knowing, thus
improving the quality of healthcare (Suyi, Meredith,
& Khan, 2017).

DISCUSSION
Aetiology:
Mindfulness practices e.g. deep breathing
are relaxation strategies which stirs-up the
parasympathetic system thus help regulate
the physiological feedbacks of anxiety and
generate cortisol (Goodman, & Schorling,
2012).
Mindfulness enables the regulation of
emotions thus improving executive
functioning. Thus nurses can utilize them to
help patients detect their distress and
control them earlier enough (Bränström et
al., 2010).

LINKING TOPIC TO MH
NURSING:
MBS offers multiple alternatives for MH
nurses when dealing with different mental
illnesses
However, modern nurses need to
understand the most appropriate MBS for
each situation
MBS nurses need to develop the three
attributes of mindfulness for them to
practice MBS:
Attention
Acceptance
Awareness (White, 2014).

LINKING TOPIC TO MH NURSING: What is
currently known about MHS
• MBS are the best psychological alternatives to
pharmacological approaches:
– Attributed to low stress, anxiety, depression and
burnout levels
• Mindfulness strategies exist in multiple forms,
thus its significant to provide a choice for the
client based on previous experience if any.
• Consequences: may increase distress in some
cases because one is able to see his thoughts
and behaviours more clearly (Moir et al., 2016).

LINKING TOPIC TO MH
NURSING: Relevance to
Clinical Intervention MBS constitutes relaxation techniques that
accentuate parasympathetic system to control
emotional processes.
Best approach of coping with thoughts and emotions
MBS enables one to learn their physiological
symptoms thus enabling them to recognize
distressful situations and redirect their thought
patterns and focus (Teper, Segal & Inzlicht, 2013).
Nurses can use MBS to ascertain the point of the
emotional and physical distress of a patient and
thus help to detect distress and appropriate
intervention
