2INNOVATIONS IN TECHNOLOGY
1. Introduction:
Innovation in organizations is all about creating new technologies as well as bringing
about new features, methods and operations into the system. The implementation of such new
ideas and techniques focuses on enhancing the productivity of the companies thus helping in
attracting a huge amount of customers and building a goodwill of the business in the market
(Kahn 2018). The new methods and ideas are generated only when a problem is recursive and
tends to appear more than a few times during the operational activities and thus, the
innovative solutions prove to be of great help to deal with such problems. Hence,
implementation of innovative ideas not only meets the demands of the customers but also
helps a company to be unique in certain aspects and thus stand out from its competitors in the
market (Kibe et al. 2015). The key factor to a successful company is innovative ideas.
2. Four Examples of the use of IT/IS for Innovation:
Connected Workplaces: The concept of ‘Interconnection in workplaces’ through wearable
technologies or smart devices is a new age idea that helps in dealing with problems in
extreme conditions in a smarter and efficient way. The components involved in the
implementation of this concept are the smart devices such as tablets or smart glasses with
wireless connectivity to the Internet (Udeagha et al. 2016). Huge organizations like the
multinational companies collaborates with numerous employees and it becomes difficult for
the managerial body to collaborate with the employees individually in person. Hence, the
interconnection of the people in an organization through smart devices improves work
efficiency and targets are achieved easily through smooth communication.
Virtual Housing Survey: The customers in this era of technological world prefers digital
survey of houses to documentation of papers while buying or renting homes. This is enabled
by the implementation of virtual reality devices such as drones and GPS that clicks pictures

or videos while roaming around the whole area of the complex and hence, determine the
actual condition of the property (McNeil and Snow 2016). The customers might make errors
while surveying manually, although this is not possible while using the GPS technology. The
drones used in this technology accurately measures the actual length or breadth of the
property with pinpoint accuracy. If the property is of worth staying, the customers can pre-
book the property by stating the date and time duration.
Pest Control in Forestry: The idea to control pests in the forest environment may not be
rational; however, it is also not impossible in this advanced technological world. The
implementation of sensors in the forestry has proved to be of great help in controlling pests
and help in improving the environment of both the flora and the fauna. The sensors try to
detect the behavioural patterns of the insects or pests and this data is analysed to check which
areas they affect (Morley et al. 2017). Pheromone traps with sensors are also an innovative
technology that helps to reduce pests in the forestry areas.
Chatbots Implementation: The technology in implementing ‘Chatbots’ in various
organization of the IT industry revolves around the concept of ‘Artificial Intelligence’ and
‘Natural Language Processing’ that helps in providing solutions to a massive number of
customers. Chatbots are personal message sections where the customers can write about their
issues and demand solutions, while the organizations note down the problems and provide
solutions in the messages (Dale 2016). The technology of Chatbots are majorly used in E-
commerce industries and proves to be highly advantageous because it enhances Customer
Relationship Management. The organizations collect data from the Chatbots and analyse
them to improve their business strategies and achieve business goals.

3. Success Factors and Lessons Learned:
Connected Workplaces: Improving interconnections in workplaces through digital services
has enhanced effective communication in the organization both vertically and horizontally.
Innovative and better ideas are generated when the managerial bodies update their employees
with the decisions taken by them. Employees also increased their commitment towards the
organization. The company leaders can appreciate their employees in sooner time and
appraisal systems have gained a lot more scope due to this connectivity. Issues in workplaces
get resolved much faster due to continuous interaction amongst the employees (Masalimova,
Usak and Shaidullina 2016). However, there might be a lack of discipline and behavioural
risks if the distinction vanishes between the managerial level and the employee level.
Virtual Housing Survey: With the implementation of drone technology in real-estate
property dealing, it proved to be a lot advantageous because people can book properties with
just an Internet access in their smart devices from anywhere in the world removing
geographical dependencies (Khan Tausif and Javed Malik 2019). The drones are a success
because it can click images and videos from every angle and thus create an interest amongst
the buyers. However, virtual housing survey may lack efficiency if the Internet connection is
not available on both ends or the wireless technology of drone fails to operate temporarily
leading to a halt in the business.
Pest Control in Forestry: Sensor implementation in remote areas of forestry is a huge
success to remove pests and unwanted insects that might harm the animals as well as the trees
of the forest. The sensors are advantageous because it can be placed in remote areas where
human cannot access easily. Huge data is collected from those remote areas that helps in
taking immediate steps if there is a forest fire. However, according to Cui et al. (2018), the
calibration of the sensor systems might fail at times leading to the errors in the data generated
from the sensor system.

Chatbots Implementation: AI-based Chatbots in IT industries are efficient enough to learn
issues from the customers, deal with them, generate solutions and update on their own.
Hence, they can actively handle multiple customers at a time and resolve issues at a faster
rate thus increasing work efficiency and productivity for the organization. It is also a cost-
saving feature because human labour is no more required to attend queries from the
customers (Veglis and Maniou 2019). However, installation of such digital systems is cost-
effective and small organizations can hardly afford such technologies. Although, Chatbots
will be unable to resolve unique queries leading to customer dissatisfaction that might affect
the quality of the services.
4. The impacts of internal and external factors on the success (or the
failure) of IS/IT enabled innovation
Innovations in organization is inevitable because changes are necessary for a
company or a business to evolve and expand as well as enhance growth in the market.
However, these changes do have positive as well as negative impacts depending upon the
success and failures of the innovative changes in the industry. The internal factors of an
organization such as mission, leadership and communication are enhanced effectively if the
changes have a positive effect on the operational sphere of the business (Stankevich 2016).
However, failure in the changes leads to change in mission and other effective changes in the
organization. The external factors political, economic or social changes are also witnessed
along with the change in the technologies that are brought in the industries.
4.1. Impacts of Internal Factors on Success or Failure
Organizational: The success or failure of any changes brought in IT has a great impact on
the organization where the innovative change is implemented. The innovative technologies
like the Chatbots have replaced a lot of human workforce in an organization that reduced the

6INNOVATIONS IN TECHNOLOGY
cost spend on the numerous people for the job role. This is a positive impact that helps the
organization to cut down the human resources cost. However, if the drones that replaced the
humans in virtual housing survey does not work properly, it will stop the business for the
moment unless the functionality issue is solved (Srakar and Verbič 2018). Thus, the
organizational body will face both the positive and negative impacts for any change.
Individual: The changes in IT systems also have impacts on the individuals of any
organization. Whenever any change is brought about, the individuals have to cope with the
effect of the changes and finally learn the functionalities of the new system to operate them
efficiently (Iordan, Dolcos and Dolcos 2018). To make an organization digitally connected,
the people need to upgrade themselves and learn the digital system such that they can
communicate with themselves efficiently. However, implementation of Chatbots had a
negative impact on the individuals as many people lost their job due to this automation
process.
Management Factors: The management body of any organization also has to face the
impact of the changes brought about by the technologies in this digital age. They have to
make the people of the organization aware of the innovative changes and help them to
accustom themselves with the respective changes (Chavez et al. 2015). For a digitally
connected workplace, the management body of any organization can appreciate the people
for their effective communication and thus increase the profit-making chances of the
company. Although, if there is any loss like the damage of sensors due to forest fires, the
management body will be responsible to replace them with new sensors.
4.2. External factors
Market: Innovative changes in technology contributes a great deal in the market as it not
only makes profit for the organization, but also helps in the economic growth of the country.

7INNOVATIONS IN TECHNOLOGY
The technological changes helps to increase connectivity amongst people as well as spreads
information throughout the world through promotions of innovative ideas. This phenomenon
gave rise to the concept of digital marketing which promotes the concept of digital
connections, sensor implementation and Internet of Things (IoT) worldwide such that the
medium to small sized organizations can be aware and adapt to these changes easily
(Newman, Prajogo and Atherton 2016). Hence, digital changes also increases social
interactions amongst the organizations through technologies.
Industry: Technological innovations are necessary for any kind of industry to upgrade
themselves and to survive in the market. The industries should implement such changes
disregarding the fact that the impact might be positive or negative. If an industry adopts new
technologies such as cloud solutions, it will save a lot of space and memory to store data and
does not have to deal with the issues of in-house database systems (Maietta 2015). However,
the company needs to be well equipped with encryption and decryption methods to secure the
confidential data in clouds and save them from eavesdropping. Thus, a company shall face a
lot of impact due to the significant changes taking place in the industry.
Social: Innovations in the technologies in the IT industry has enhanced the effective
communication and has increased socialism throughout the world. The implementation of
wireless network in IoT devices helps people to concentrate on important work leaving the
rest of the minor work to automated machines. Thus, they can connect with more people and
discuss about the enhancement of technologies in this digital era. In ecommerce industry, the
online websites allow sharing of data through social media to increase marketing amongst the
customers worldwide and hence increase profit-making spheres for the organization (Ayob,
Teasdale and Fagan 2016). The increase in social interactions also enhances smooth
relationships amongst the employees of an organization too.

Economic: Economic growth is enhanced simultaneously with the innovative changes
brought about in the organizations along with the digital enhancement of the organization.
Innovative changes focuses primarily on achieving the maximum output and contribute in the
productivity by giving the same amount of input. This not only increases the profit-making
chances but also helps to cut down ineffective costs for the organization. Vast improvements
in technological spheres contribute massively in the economic growth of the country (Blind
2016). For example, implementation of Chatbots reduced the cost that was spent on the
people who were attending queries of the customer. Thus, in this way, the companies can
generate automation tools to cut down the unnecessary costs and invest the same amount in
affording better technologies for the improvement of the company technologically.
Technological: The technological changes in a company can have a huge impact on any
organization irrespective of the fact that they are positive or negative. Every technological
phenomenon helps the organization to move forward and advance themselves without
considering the negative impacts much because the positive impacts have a great contribution
to the industries (Mai and Phuong 2016). For instance, introduction of Chatbots in the
ecommerce websites that supports online transactional activities helps the company to attend
multiple issues at a single time which is advantageous for the company. Although when
unique issues come from the customer end, the Chatbots are unable to resolve them without
human involvement.
Political/Policy Factors: Government of any country has a neutral role to play in the
technological advancement of any digital inventions. The government makes policies to
encourage innovations because that will contribute a great deal in the economic, social and
political aspect of the country. However, the government also looks into the fact whether
these innovative changes have a negative impact on the society such as unemployment,
pollution due to the products manufactured and risky products (Zhao and Yao 2018, April).
Document Page
9INNOVATIONS IN TECHNOLOGY
To prevent such negative impacts the government also implements rules and regulations
against such technological advancements of the industry.
5. Conclusion
Any kind of industry should support innovative technological changes to stand out
uniquely from its competitors in the market and create its own goodwill to expand the
business both socially and economically. These changes happens to enhance productivity of
the organizations and are sustainable too in terms of saving resources. Technologies like
cloud solutions or Chatbots are highly beneficial for the industry as it contributes to economic
growth as well as provide instant solutions to the queries raised by the customers. Thus, these
innovative changes should be implemented to enhance the industries towards a sustainable
future. The management body needs to invest a great deal of effort to assess the risks and
benefits before the change is implemented. Once the change is done, the benefits are enjoyed,
however, if the process fails, it can affect any organization negatively. Thus, there are
positive as well as negative impacts with respect to the innovative changes that are brought
about by the organizations. Both the external and internal factors are affected when these
changes are put forth in any organization. The managerial body as well as the employees are
affected with the changes of the organization. These changes also have an impact on the
external factors such as the market, industry and so on, thus helping the generation to become
technologically advanced.
6. Recommendations
The above mentioned changes brought about in the industry has a great impact on the
world due to the benefits enjoyed by the common people. However, these technologies can be
enhanced or changes can be brought about that will not create any negative impact on the
society.

10INNOVATIONS IN TECHNOLOGY
The connectivity in workplaces are of great help as that enhances communication
amongst workers. However, if the companies can afford this digital communication
for the people who works from home, that will enhance more productivity due to the
free available Internet.
In the virtual housing survey, the drones are beneficial to click pictures and videos of
the housing complex. Although, there should be process by which the drones can
implement cloud storage of these images such that they the companies can build the
same house models again.
The sensors in the pest control should support camouflage with the trees and branches
such that they are not harmed by animals.
In Chatbots technology, the robots should be advanced enough to resolve any unique
queries raised by the end users.
