Topic: Development of Mobile application Information system for FoodWorks Supermarket
1. Project Case and organizational context
The application of mobile includes convergence between the information technologies
and the telecommunication technologies. The mobile application is new application included in
the information system and provides a new research area. Mobile application includes a three tier
architecture and includes execution over multiple layers such as presentation layer, application
layer and database layer (Latif, Lakhrissi & Es-Sbai, 2016). The organization that is taken in this
project management report is FoodWorks Supermarket. This is a retails store that is run by
AURL (Australian United Retailers Limited). The company has over 400 supermarkets that is
spread over seven states. FoodWorks Supermarket provides fresh products to the customers and
provides contemporary approach in the retail business.
The technologies that are included in FoodWorks Supermarket includes all the IT
services, business intelligence, include automation process of utilizing the technology, and also
includes data analytics. The company also maintains vendor relationship, and includes tele-
communication, provides solution for card payment, and includes broadband and Point of sale to
the vendors. But the services that was provided by FoodWorks were only store service. They
were not having mobile application ordering service. In their business, the head of the
technology department Brad Slater wanted to design a mobile application for the business to
make the service more convenient.
Project schedule and budget: The project will take 223 days to complete and the total
budget that will be included to complete the mobile application for FoodWorks Supermarket is
estimated to be $435,628.

Problem Statement- The business is having a competition with other retail stores of
providing mobile application service to the customers. So, FoodWorks Supermarket has decided
to develop a mobile application for the business to enhance their service and to sustain in the
market.
Project Objectives- The objective of the this project is to develop a mobile application in
the information system of FoodWorks Supermarket and to implement the mobile application in
the business to provided online delivering service to the customers.
2. Current state of FoodWorks Supermarket
Currently, the company is working on providing store service to the customers. The
customer needs to visit the store and check all the products that are available and buy products
from the store. The information system will be updated accordingly and products in the
inventory will be re-stocked as per the selling rate of the company (Shilton & Greene, 2019). But
the business wants to enhance itself by developing a mobile application for the company. The
mobile application will help to improve the information system of the company and will be able
to provide home delivery service to the customer even if they are not visiting the store. The
customers can order from their home and while travelling from the mobile device.
The project includes improvement of the services provided by FoodWorks Supermarket
by implementing mobile application that helps to access all the important information in the
company and provides mobility service to the customers. FoodWorks Supermarket is a famous
grocery store in Australia and wants to implement mobile based application in the business so
that they can keep up the competition, enhance the brand name, includes data driven marketing,
have personalized shopping experience, and include loyalty programs in the business (Kumar,

Krishna, & Manjula, 2016). The mobile application that is to be built for the FoodWorks
Supermarket would also help to integrate mobile application with the in store experience and
enables customers to do mobile payments. With people more dependent on their mobile devices,
FoodWorks Supermarket also wants to shifts itself to mobile channel so that they can respond
the shifting trend in the shopping behavior.
3. SWOT Analysis of Mobile application in Information system
SWOT analysis helps to provide analytical framework creating a picture for the
information system in the organization (Dar et al., 2018). This is an analytical framework that
helps in providing a best solution for the organization. SWOT analysis helps to identify the
internal as well as the external influences in the organization.
The strengths that mobile application have on FoodWorks Supermarket are:
 The mobile application helps to improve the information system for creating a global
navigation bar for the company.
 Mobile application include attractive banner for the company.
 The application of mobile is easier to navigate.
The weakness of the mobile application are:

This project is chosen for this report because of the revolution that mobile application is
having on the company. Implementation of mobile application has enabled the retailers to
interact with the customers and this has become one of the most important aspect of information
technology in retail stores. As FoodWorks Supermarket is facing tough competition from the
market, implementing mobile application is necessary for the company and thus this project was
chosen for this report. Implementation of mobile application includes processes of project
management and to discuss all the methods and processes in the development process, this
project was chosen.
4. Processes and methods to select IS/IT project
The project selection processes and methods used for selecting the project helps the
organization to embrace the business need and provide actual method for determining the impact
that the project will have on the business and measure the assessment of the project. The method
that has been used for selecting this project for FoodWorks Supermarket is benefit measurement
method (Panhale, 2016). This method presents the value of the estimated inflow cash and
outflow cash in the organization. The method used in the benefit measurement methods are cost
ratio, economic value added, scoring model, payback period, net present value, internal rate of
return, opportunity cost, and discounted cash flow.

To select the right project is the main skill of the company and resources available needs
to be calculated to complete the project successfully. Benefit measurement method is directly
used by the project manager and this method helps to rate the potential project as per the specific
models and also helps to compare the results between candidates of the project.
5. Justification of methodology
For developing the project, agile methodology is the most appropriate methodology. This
methodology is flexible and any change in customer requirements and project specifications are
possible with the help of agile methodology. This methodology is considered as modern strategy
of project management (Delía et al., 2017). The agile method that is selected for completing this
project includes four major principles. This includes individuals as well as interactions that are
over the processes as well as on the tools. Agile methodology includes working software with
comprehensive documentation and include customer collaboration with contract negotiations and
responds to all the changes that takes place in the development process.
Development of mobile application for FoodWorks Supermarket requires continuous
interaction with the customer and that opportunity is provided only by the agile method of
project management (Rodríguez & Carreira, 2017). Agile method includes testing all through the
development process and testing activities takes place concurrently with the agile project
development method. With the agile application development method, the process is broken
down to individual models so that work becomes easier. Customer includes early as well as
frequent opportunities to test the product and take decision accordingly. They also has the
opportunity to include change in the project.

The agile method is the best methodology for developing the mobile application for
FoodWorks Supermarket because this methodology provides the opportunity to have stakeholder
engagement, includes transparency, providing the application early and helps in predictable
delivery with predictable cost and predicted schedule (Ahmad et al., 2018). This method allows
change in the project and the main focus of this methodology is on the customers. Foremost, this
methodology helps to improve the quality of the project.
6. Tools used in system development process
The tools that FoodWorks Supermarket includes in developing the mobile application for
the company are modeling tool, prototyping tool, and computer aided system engineering tool
(CASE). With the modeling technology of system development, the system analyst can have a
graphical representation on the concept as well as the processes that they can analyze, modify as
well as test in the system (Santos et al., 2016). The system analyst with the help of modelling
technique can describe as well as simplify the mobile application with set of business data,
process models, object as well as network in the system (Powell & Wimmer, 2016). Business
data in the modelling technique describes the structure as well as design of the application, the
object model describes the object that helps to combine the data as well as processes. The
network model mainly describes design as well as protocols that are associated with the
telecommunication links. Lastly the process model describes the programmer’s logic and helps
to write all code modules.
Prototyping tool is also used for developing the mobile application as because this tool
tests the concept of the systems and includes the opportunity for examining the input, user
interface and the output of the mobile application (Stepanova & Kirikova, 2017). Prototype

organization
Revolution of mobile application has changed the process of retailer’s interaction with
customers (Ashishdeep, Bhatia & Varma, 2016). The retailers do not have to depend on the
billboards or on the printed materials for advertising discounts or giving special offers to their
customers. The retailers can do them with the help of the mobile applications. FoodWorks
Supermarket needed to include mobile application in its business because the growth of mobile
has impacted the buying habits of the customers (Aldayel & Alnafjan, 2017). Customers with the
advancement of mobile usage can compare the prices, search places, goods, and view the rating
of other buyer before purchasing a particular product.
The strategic goal of the organization was to improve their services and provide home
delivery to the customers so that their sales increase and can sustain in the competitive market
and mobile application helps the company to do so (Stefanello & Lopes, 2017). Mobile
application includes geological technologies that helps to track the location of the nearby store
for the customers. Mobile applications also includes beacon technology that is the company can
track the location of the customer and provide them offers accordingly (Strandell et al., 2019).
FoodWorks Supermarket also want to provide customer loyal programs and that can be done
with implementing the mobile application in the business process. With mobile application, the

organization can provide push notification to the customer on the basis of their needs. The
payment process is also improved using the mobile based application.
8. Scope, features, limitations and Issues related to scope change
Scope: The scope of the agile project of mobile application development includes high
level of requirements. The requirements are usually done as user stories and that is done along
with the release plan. The scope of this project also states that the detailed requirement are
necessary for the project and those are stated when they are needed in the system development.
Major features: The process of requirement analysis included in this project is eliciting
requirements and analyzing the requirements. Eliciting requirements includes process to gather
requirements by applying proper communication with the customers. Analyzing the requirements
includes determining quality of requirement and helps to identify the requirements that are not
clear, ambiguous, or incomplete.
Project Limitations: The limitations that the development team might face while
developing the mobile application is communication gap, lack of proper guidance in the team,
and there might also be limited support to develop the software system that is being developed.
Among the agile team members handling the project, there might be communication gap among
the team members and strong communication is needed to mitigate the communication gap. The
team handling the project might not get proper guidance to complete the project with agile
development.
Issues related to scope change: The change of scope in a project will impact the cost of
the project and the schooled time in the project (Ahmad et al., 2017). The scope change in the

project should be managed properly in the project and project manager has the responsibility
manage the scope change properly.
9. Project Schedule
The method that is used for creating the project schedule is MS Project. With this
software, the scheduling of the project can be done automatically and can help to project
managers to track the project also.
