AI Summary
This essay explores the negative impacts of modern technology on human health, focusing on the increasing use of mobile phones and other electronic devices. It references two case studies, one examining the link between mobile phone use and the risk of glioma, and another investigating the impact of radiofrequency radiation on DNA damage. The essay highlights issues such as psychological problems caused by social media, environmental pollution from machines, and harmful radiation emitted by electronics, particularly mobile phones. It concludes that while technology offers many benefits, its excessive use can lead to serious health problems, emphasizing the need for balance and preventative measures to mitigate these risks. MODERN TECHNOLOGY 2
Introduction
Today technology has a very powerful influence on everyone’s life. Technology has
controlled everyone in such a manner that even imaging a world without technology is not
possible. The impact of technology is constantly increasing. As a result of this, development
has also become essential. In simple words, “Development” means improvement i.e. adopting
new technologies, economic growth and social welfare; all this helps in creating new
opportunities for people. Even though technology has both positive as well as negative
impacts, this discussion will focus on negative impacts of technology on health. In order to
analyse these impacts, two articles have been used in this discussion. The first article is
“Mobile phones and cordless phone use and risk for Glioma” written by Hardell , L &
Carlberg and second article is “Impact of radiofrequency radiation on DNA damage and
antioxidants in peripheral blood lymphocytes of humans residing in the vicinity of mobile
phone base stations” written by Zothansiama, Mary Zosangzuali, Miriam Lalramdinpuii,
Ganesh Chandra Jagetia. The thesis of this discussion is technology is affecting health of
individual negatively.
Case Study
Technology is getting advanced with each progressing day and with that use/dependence of
technology is also constantly increasing, particularly that of mobile phone. Mobile is
considered to be a big contributor in increasing negative impacts of the modern technology
because mobile phones have caused great addiction, which eventually causes harmful effects
on body. Excessive use of mobile phones has negative impact on eyes, is linked with
depression and has even been associated with dangerous disease, due to radiations emitting
from mobile phones. A published article showed a comparison of two cases in which there
are two patients who were diagnosed with tumour during 1997-2003 and 2007-2009. At that

time they were aged 20-80 years and 18-75 years respectively (Hardell & Carlberg, 2015, p.
13). The study established that high numbers of patients were suffering from disease called
“Glioma”. This disease is mainly caused due to increase in use of cordless mobile phones. It
was also found that if any individual is using cordless mobile phone before the age of 20 then
they are at a high risk of being affected by this disease (Hardell & Carlberg, 2015, pp. 5-7).
Cordless mobile phones cause more harm to health in comparison to other electronic devices
(Hardell & Carlberg, 2015, p. 16). It does not mean that people should not use cordless
mobile phones but they have to make a bridge between use and excessive use. By taking
corrective steps of prevention everyone can be safe from the diseases caused by modern
technology. And everyone can use it without any/less harm to their health.
Despite its negative impacts, modern technology has various positive effects as well. It helps
people in connecting across the globe without any hassle. This helps in staying updated and
in knowing what is going around the world; it also helps in development of employment
opportunities. In healthcare department, technology has various benefits because patients can
directly contact their doctor from anywhere in the world and whenever they want, at ease of a
click. There are advanced machineries which are used in treatment of different types of
harmful disease and this can prolong the lives of people all over the world. Awareness about
life threating diseases can be spread easily, as was done in cases of Ebola, Swine Flu and
Zika virus, with the use of media and technology. Technology also enables sharing of
resources in solving or in finding solutions for such diseases. Technology helps people in
generating new ideas and innovating new technologies, furthering the advantages for
healthcare field.

Negative effects on health
There are many psychological problems which can be caused by excessive use of the social
media. This is because everyone is affected by social media at an alarmingly high rate and
this number is constantly increasing. It has been noticed that the excessive use of the social
media can bring depression on different people owing to the difference in lifestyle of two
people. Technology has created pollution in the environment because of the harmful gases
left behind by machines, which again can be harmful for people.
Apart from this, there are many harmful radiations which are exhaled by electronics and it
may result negatively on health of a person. The radioactive waves which are produced by
mobile phones can be more harmful for human beings because it can damage to DNA and
antioxidant status is cultured human peripheral blood lymphocytes of an individual, which is
a serious damage. Another study conducted in this context covered people of different age
groups who were judged based on their age, gender, smoking habits, alcohol consumption,
mobile phone use per day and other factors. This study highlighted the harmful results of
radiations from mobile phones. This study suggested that mobile phones should be kept at a
distance of 300m because of its harmful radioactive frequency (Zosangzuali, Lalramdinpuii,
Jagetiya, & Zothansiama, 2017, p. 3). These rays are also harmful for eyes and ears, as it may
cause vision problem in eyes; and with the high sound it may also effect to ears. It may also
affect the brain owing to the diseases which can be caused as a result of prolonged exposure
to mobile radiations. There are various antioxidants which are present in plasma of an
individual which can be damaged by the radioactive rays of the mobile phone. (Zosangzuali,
Lalramdinpuii, Jagetiya, & Zothansiama, 2017, p. 2).

Conclusion
This century is known as the digital age because of the technology. Modern Technology is
developing at a high rate and it has made life so easier; but because of excessive use of
technology, there are some serious healthcare problems which can easily affect the wellbeing
of an individual. Yes, there are negative effects of modern technology to health but at the
same it is essential for development. So, there is a need to make balance while using
technology so that people can be saved them from serious and harmful diseases.
