Motivation
Motivation is considered as one of the essential factor that plays a great role in boosting the
productivity of the workers. In this paper, the emphasis will be given on concept of motivation
and also on the reinforcement theory. Motivation can be defined as the internal feeling which
helps the people to give their best towards the assigned task. Without motivation it would not be
possible for an individual to attain the set goals and targets. Motivation towards work will always
help the people to be dedicated and honest towards the allocated operational functions.
In relation to work motivation, performance is one of the major factors that is taken into
consideration. If the employees are motivated and putting their efforts then there are more
chances of high performance. Need satisfaction is also the factor that is linked with motivation
and performance. The basic needs are the psychological requirements that ensure the survival
and wellbeing of the people. In the workplace, it is the responsibility of the managers or the
higher authority to boost the motivation by satisfying the needs of the workers. The higher
authority should consider Maslow hierarchy of needs theory in which there are five stages. The
five stages are psychological need in which the basic needs of the employees should be fulfilled
such as food and shelter. The next stage is safety needs in which the management should provide
job security to the employees. Belongingness needs is also the stage in which the management
maintain the interpersonal relation of the workers. The next stage is esteem needs in which status
and prestige of the workers should be enhanced. Last stage is self-actualization needs in which
the personal growth and experience of the workers should be considered.
Motivation is also concerned with reinforcement theory which relates with the behavior.
Reinforcement is the theory can be defined as the process that shapes the behavior by controlling
the consequences of the behavior. In this theory, there are combination of rewards and
punishments that are considered to reinforce the set behavior. The reinforcement theory can be
divided into two such as positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. In positive
reinforcement the behavior of the individual is strengthen by considering the behavior by the
desirable consequences. The next is negative reinforcement that strengthens the behavior by
holding the unpleasant consequence when the workers perform a particular behavior. The

reinforcement theory is used by giving punishment and also by focusing on extinction in which
the positive consequence is not allowed to consider the previously reinforced behavior.
Reinforcement theory is considered by the staff of the university and by considering this concept
they have improved the performance over the last decade. In reinforcement theory, the staff has
considered positive reinforcement in which the praise is one of the factors that is considered.
They have praised the students for the efforts that are contributed towards the studies. So, by
giving praise the performance on the university level has been enhanced.
It can be concluded that motivation is one of the essential factor that should be present in an
individual. Motivation helps a person to accomplish the set goals and objectives. Reinforcement
theory is the part of the motivation that encourages the person to give their best towards the
assigned or allocated work.
