Background to Investigation Topic
Employee motivation is a level of commitment, innovation and energy that staff of a
company holds at a time of working in business environment. Employers in every organisation
needs a productive workforce with purpose of achieving business objectives. (Brauer, 2021). In
addition, employee motivation can be improved by using certain techniques such as clearing
targets, lead a vision, recognising great work and creating welcoming work environment
(Widjaja, Maarif and Rachbini, 2021). These helps organisation in development of employee
performance and productivity and make them feel recognisable for better work.
Background to Investigation Organisation
The selected organisation within current research is Sainsbury. It is the largest chain of
supermarkets in UK. It was founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury. It is serving all over the
world with having 1430 shops in different locations. Company is consisting of 111,900
employees working currently in business environment (Sainsbury's Retail, 2021). The products
in which company is dealing are hypermarkets, convenience shops and forecourt shops. It is the
largest retailer of groceries and is having definite rival as well. Company is using some of the
motivation techniques such as rewards and appreciation, performance management programmes
which helps employees in development of growth opportunities and resulting in enhancement of
productivity as well.
Research Rationale
The rationale of conducting this project is to identify various motivation schemes used in
organisation to enhance employees performance for longer duration. Motivation schemes such as
rewards and appreciation, performance management etc. resulting in enhancing productivity of
the organisation as well. In relation with Sainsbury, they are using motivation strategies in order
to boost employees productivity and potential (Pavlidou, and Efstathiades, 2021). It helps them
in retention of employees in business organisation as well. Rationale of choosing this topic is that
employees are to be motivated in order to develop their potential. Further, researcher is
conducting this research for personal and professional development. In context of personal
development, researcher will be able to get details about motivates schemes used in Sainsbury.
Further, in professional development, researcher is going enhance communication and decision
making skills. Further, it will help them in near future when they apply for any job role.

Literature review
According to Zeb, Akbar and Zeb, 2021, Motivation is the process of influencing an
individual towards achievement of organisational goals and objectives. Employers influence staff
members through various motivation schemes. There are various types of motivation schemes
which are used within working environment. These are rewards and recognition, training and
development, performance management programmes, employee’s engagement etc. all these
motivation schemes resulting in getting motivated and boosting performance of employees as
well. Motivation schemes used in Sainsbury are rewards and recognition can be done through
various ways such as providing bonus, incentives and cash prizes etc. also by getting promotion,
employees feel motivated and productive. Managers in every organisation is focusing on
developing employee’s productivity and performance. By providing them enough motivation
schemes, company can be able to retain those employees for longer duration and develop a
strong goodwill as well. There are certain benefits which are provided to employees through
motivation schemes (Widjaja, Maarif and et.al., 2021). These are boosting employee
performance, healthy and positive working environment, increasing employee’s engagement,

Research Methodology
Research philosophy: It is set of principles which concerns with worldwide view. It
consists of two methods. These are positivism and interpretivism philosophy. The present study
is focusing on positivism philosophy because it assumes that knowledge is independent of a
subject which is being studied. (Chen and Hall, 2021). Further, it consists of quantitative
research which provides numerical information about a topic. This philosophy studied more
scientific and resulting in testing phenomenon.
Research approach: Research approach is recommended of two approaches. These are
deductive and inductive approaches. Present research is focusing on deductive approach because
it starts with specific hypothesis development which is based on survey. It checks if information
holds it in particular context. It develops numerical data and findings. It helps in achieving
research aim and objectives and analysing data and information effectively.
Research strategy: There are various types of research strategy in onion framework.
These strategies help in analysing and gathering information effectively. Some of the strategies
of research are survey, literature review, action research, experimental research, case study etc.
Present study is using literature review and survey to gather data and information. Further, in
survey, questionnaire is used to collect data in statistical form (Zeb, Akbar and Zeb, 2021). On
the other hand, literature review is used to gather in depth knowledge about a topic.
Research methodology: There are two types of research methodology within research.
These are quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative research brings numeric information
and qualitative research brings non numeric information. Within current research, investigator is
using quantitative research to collect data and information because it brings numerical
information about a topic. In this research, investigator is using questionnaire survey to collect
data in statistical way. It involves graphs and charts as well.
Sampling: Sampling is a method of selecting some of the samples from large set of
population. It consists of two methods (Kodwani, and Kodwani, 2021). These are probabilistic
and non-probabilistic sampling method. Within current research, probabilistic sampling method
is used to eliminate biasses. Within this, random sampling is used to select a sample because it

provides equal opportunity to every respondent to be selected in a sample. The sample size
selected within research is 40 who are the employees of Sainsbury.
Data collection: Data is collected through two methods. These are primary and
secondary data collection method. Primary data is bringing true and reliable data which is having
direct information. It makes use of graphs and charts in order to get accurate information about a
topic. On the other hand, secondary data brings in depth knowledge about a particulars topic
through the use of books and journals. Within current research, Investigator is using both of the
methods as primary data is collected through questionnaire survey which consist of close ended
questions (Hussien, Yasin, and Salman, 2021). Further, it involves use of graphs and charts and
statistical data and findings. However, secondary data is collected through literature review
which brings in depth knowledge about a topic.
Data analysis: Data is being analysed through having true and reliable information. In
this research, investigator is using frequency distribution table to analyse and evaluate data in
effective manner. It will bring reliable and accurate information about a research topic.
Ethical issues: There are certain ethical issues which are to be followed by researcher
(Alnadi, and McLaughlin, 2021). They should not bias with the results received and should not
leak a decision to any third party. Further, they should maintain honesty and integrity with the
results.
