INTRODUCTION
In today's dynamic business world, it is needed to keep the workforce motivated in order
to accomplish the objectives. The management should utilise the resources in a very effective
and efficient way. There are various factors that affects the business in positive as well as in
negative aspects. Several theories of business and management are propounded by many
psychologist which helps in dealing with the future uncertainties and to make the business
sustainable (Levine, 2017). This report is based on discount stores “Jack” that Tesco announced
to open in order to compete with Aldi and Lidl. It will cover the motivational theories that help
in motivating the employees which makes them satisfied. In addition to that, it also covers the
advantages and limitations to Jack stores.
TASK
Motivation can be referred as the force that is derived from one's potential in order to
enhance the productivity. It helps in improving the performance and makes the employees
committed towards their work. Motivation leads to job satisfaction and plays crucial role in
increasing the productivity of the employees. It fills the individuals with great emery and
enthusiasm which push them with higher level of commitment in order to achieve the desired
goals. The business can compete with its rival competitors by making the employees motivated
towards their work. The HR need to analyse the several theories and opt the suitable one.
Following are the theories that are apt for the organisation in order to sustain and expand its
business operations.
Hertzberg theory of motivation-
It is a dual factor theory which states that job satisfaction may be caused by several
factors but job dissatisfaction may be caused by a separate set of factor, in which all components
act independently (Zheng and Bai, 2018).
Hygiene Factor theory – This theory is very optimal for motivating the employees of Jack stores.
These factor does not provide job satisfaction but the absence may create dissatisfaction. The HR
of Jack stores should formulate the salary structure effectively and must be equal to its
competitor such as Aldi and Lidl. The company policies should clearly drafted and provides
flexibility to its employees along with proper and feasible working environment. In addition to
that it should also provide fringe benefits that keeps the employees motivated.

Motivational factors -
They are not referred as motivators as they provide positive satisfaction in developing motivation
among employees. They are the supplement benefits apart from the basic satisfiers. The
company should recognise the achievement of an individual for his outstanding performance
which helps in keeping them positive towards his work (Stoyanov, 2017). Some growth and
promotional opportunities should be provided to the superior employees for their career
advancement. The employer should set to be free their employees and have less control over
them but have the accountability.
Advantages
It makes the employees focused towards their works and perform with their peak
potential.
It helps in creating a sense of achievement when they get recognised for their superior
performance.
It makes them committed toward their work by providing additional benefits that enables
in motivating as well as in retaining the employees.
Disadvantages
It does not includes all the variables that may dissatisfy the employees.
The demand and requirements of the employees may be change over a period of time
This theory only focus on the motivators and not on the impact of motivational factors.
Maslow's Hierarchy theory of needs
It is a pyramid based theory which states that a person can only be motivated when all his
needs are fulfilled. A person cannot shift for further level if his prior needs are not fulfilled. In
case of Jack discount stores, the HR manager ensures that employees should satisfy their basic
needs and provides with job safety and with other accidental benefits (Conley 2017). The
manager should appreciate the employees which keeps them motivated.
Advantages
This theory is very easy to understand as by fulfilling the grounded needs the employees
try to reach to the top of the pyramid.
As the employee completes one level, it creates as desire to go upward.

It is considered relevant in all the fields as for every individual the first priority is to fulfil
the basic needs such as shelter, clothes, food and water.
Disadvantage
The biggest limitation is that all the people do not think in the same way. For some
people, safety needs may be considered as more important than social affection. Some
people sets their priority in purchasing the expensive items rather than fulfilling their
safety or social needs.
Every individual needs cannot be measured in terms of degree of satisfaction after
completion of each level. S some people may get satisfied by fulfiling their basic and
safety needs and some do not even by satisfying all the levels of motivational pyramid.
There are many people working in Jack discount store of different tradition and culture,
so it becomes difficult to analyse the needs in terms of satisfaction components.
CONCLUSION
From the above report, it was concluded that HR manager should adopt the above two
motivational theories in order to utilise its employees in a optimum way. By fulfilling their safety
and basic needs, they get motivated and creates a sense of going further in order to achieve all
the levels of pyramid needs. By keeping the workforce motivated, it helps in increasing the
productivity and can effectively compete with Aldi and Lidl. Both the stores have workforce,
but matter is that who utilise its available resources and in what manner so that it generates
higher revenue along with capturing the major market. If the employees are committed towards
their work, it leads to making the enterprise successful. The HR manager should use various
tactics which enables employees to be motivated and retain in the company.
