INTRODUCTION
Motivation is a technique that is used to enhance the performance of the employee and
improves the quality to achieve the target. For this, HR manager is liable to encourage their staff
to contribute their maximum efforts in the achievement of their desired goals and objectives.
Tesco is the third largest multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer with
headquarter in UK. Recently Tesco announced to open a new discount store "Jack". As a part of
their ongoing strategy to compete with Aldi and Lidl. Tesco wants that "Jack" store will have
same culture and same values as their rest store has (Howard, 2016). They also want that
employee are highly motivated towards "Jack" stores. Tesco management wants that the need
and demand of their customer will be taken care by "Jack" store.
MAIN BODY
The motivational theory that could be used by the Tesco to increase the productivity of
their new “Jack" discount stores. Motivations leads to increase the performance of the employee
that affects the growth of the company, motivated employee work with more commitment and
with more focus that affects the employee satisfaction and loyalty towards the company. These
theories are as defined as follows:
Maslow's motivational theory: This theory can be used by Tesco for their new store
"Jack" as to motivate the employee as it also known as content theory that is shaped as a pyramid
in which there are several levels, the lowest level defines the basic need whereas the upper level
defines the complex needs (Khanna, 2017) Maslow's theory describes that employee get
motivated when their basic needs were satisfied. These are shown as:

(source: Maslow's hierarchy of needs, 2018)
Physiological needs: These are the basic need includes water, food, air, shelter, cloth etc. Safety needs: It includes the need that shows some security of life for future like financial
security. Social needs: It include the love and believe of society, friend, family and neighbours. Self-actualisation: It describes the belief that the person can helped other as well, or the
belief that a person has some powers to take some decision for the favour of company.
Self-esteem: It includes the respect that one gets from the society, colleagues, friends,
family.
Advantage of using Maslow's motivation theory in Jack discount stores are as follows:
Builds strong relation: By using Maslow's motivation theory there is a generation of
strong relationship between the employee and company (Robertson, 2016). As "Jack"
discount stores is the new store of Tesco thus they focused on the needs of employee and
fulfil them then that motivates the employee to perform even more better.
Provides reward: It is easy to get to know about the need of the employee and with that
fulfil the needs of the employee by giving promotion, perks, bonus, authority etc.

Rewards always provides a positive state of mind and that help to keep motivate the
employee.
Motivates the employee: As the needs of the employee get fulfil by "Jack" discount
store thus the employee get satisfied by the company thus the performance of the
employee gets enhanced which directly affects the growth of the company.
Limitation of using Maslow's motivation theory in Jack discount stores are as follows:
Every employee is not same and their need also varies it is not mandatory that everyone
wants same level of motivation. Thus this is the factor that "Jack" discount store must
look for, as the need of the employee also changes according to the conditions.
This same priority level doesn't match with all the employee or it will not remain same
for all thus it is a restriction for "Jack" discount store.
Herzberg's two factor theory: Tesco can also use this theory to motivates the employee of
their new "Jack" discount store. This theory deals with the two factor that is either the employee
gets satisfied or dissatisfied by the different factor that rises in the company (Sanjeev, 2016).
This is also known as the content theory that it deals with the different situations or condition of
the company. This theory is also termed as Motivation-Hygiene theory or dual-factor theory.
Motivation and hygiene are the two different that is dealt by this theory. These two factor is
describing as follows as:
Document Page
(Source: Two factor theory of Motivation-Hygiene and Motivational factor,
2017)
Motivation factor: These are those factor that directly satisfies the employee and it
include all the different factor by which the employee gets motivated. This can have direct
impact on the growth and development of the employee as well as company. As much the
employee gets motivate that much the performance will have increased and that shows the
increment in productivity. Motivation factor involves recognition, achievement, authority, power
to take decisions, growth, responsibility etc.
Hygiene factor: These are those factor that doesn't satisfied the employee but it
demotivates the employee by its absence (Soni, 2016). Hygiene factor includes the working
atmosphere of the company or it is the surrounded atmosphere of the employee. Hygiene factor
includes company terms and conditions, policies, working conditions, salary, relationship, etc.
Advantage of using Herzberg's motivation theory in Jack discount stores are as follows:
Tesco get to know that it is good to implement this theory in their new "Jack" discount
store as if the working conditions are good that motivates the employee to work even
more harder and that gives the long-time benefits to the company.

This theory focus even more on the working condition of the employee and considers all
the different factor that indirectly affects the performance of the employee and that is the
advantage for the growth of "Jack" discount stores.
"Jack" discount store focused on each and every problem that might influenced the
performance of the employee. They perform all the different activities which can directly
or indirectly affects the employee, thus employee is free from all other load and they are
focused to achieve the target of the company.
Limitation of using Herzberg's motivation theory in Jack discount stores are as follows:
This theory more focused on the satisfaction level of the employee that might get
influenced the objective of the company which affects the growth of "Jack discount store.
CONCLUSION
It has been concluded from the above report that it is required for "Jack" discount store to
adopt motivational theories which includes Maslow's motivational theory and Herzberg's
motivational theory in order to motivate their employee because employee's performance leads to
the growth and success of the company.
