Introduction
Personal reflection can be defined as the response of an individual to own experiences,
events or situations. It helps in getting better understanding regarding own strengths and
weaknesses (Weinberg, (2018). This is a reflective report which includes my own reflection on
motivational interview by using Rolfe reflective model.
Main Body
When studying in the module, I need to take a motivational interview by using some
techniques to conducted it successfully. Initially, I have no knowledge regarding interview. But,
my tutor taught me about different techniques that I should use while performing a good
motivational interview. I learnt in the classroom that I should express empathy through reflective
listening, avoid argument as well as direct confrontation, support optimism and self-efficacy and
develop a discrepancy between the values or goals of client and their current behavior. At the
time of taking motivational interview, I need to consider all these techniques in order to conduct
it successfully. I learnt that I must interact with the interviewee with respect and accept their
feelings. I was not good in performing interviews and have no knowledge regarding how to
interact with interviewee. As a result to this, I faced difficulties in interview in other person and
not able to performed that successfully.
Although, I executed my learning during the interview process, I was not able to performed
it effectively due to lack of effective communication skills. Though, I avoided arguments during
the motivational interview process, I sometimes do argue with the interviewee. By all this
situation, I realized that my interviewing skill was not good and I need to work on that in order to
improve it so that I will be able to perform the motivational interview effectively (Protzko, &
Schooler, (2017). However, in that situation I learnt that it is very necessary for an interviewer to
interact effectively with interviewee in order to have good conversation with them and get more
information regarding the skills, knowledge base and competencies of the interviewee. by the
help of good communication skills, I could be able to interact with the interviewee effectively
during performing motivational interview.
My experience of performing the interview was good however I felt that I need to work
upon my interview skills along with the communication skills so that I will be able to be a good
interviewer and take interview effectively. For improving my interview skills, I will first get

appropriate knowledge of the subject area and review the resume of candidate properly
(Burrows, (2019). This will help me in asking related questions to the candidate and taking a
good motivational interview. On the other hand, for improving communication skills, I undertake
classes from professionals and also take help of internet to improve my communication skills. By
improving my skills, I will be able to perform the motivational interview in more appropriate
manner in future.
Conclusion
As per the above reflection, it has been concluded that reflection on personal experience
assist an individual in recognising own strengths and weaknesses which further assist in taking
appropriate actions to enhance weak areas and perform effectively in future.
