Introduction
An MP3 player is an electronic device. This electronic device can play digital audio files.
This type of electronic device known as portable media player. The term MP3 referred to as
digital audio file format. This format is one of the widely used format of audio files compare
to other formats. This report discuss different design process of developing an MP3 player.
We develop this power supply according to client’s requirements and client requires an MP3
player based on PIC/Arduino controller with touch screen LCD. We acquire design
requirements from design brief provided from project manager. We structure this report
according to desired standard. Additionally, we try to compliance with industry standard for
developing an MP3 player.
LO1 Plan a design solution and prepare an engineering design
specification in response to a stakeholder’s design brief and
requirements.
1. Client design brief
We are assign with project of designing an MP3 player for client. Client requires a PIC or
Arduino based MP3 player. To keep MP3 player user friendly client prefer touch screen
LCD.
2. Importance and influence of client’s design brief
Keeping in view specifications of MP3 player, we identify that how important is particular
component for design process. We conclude from design brief that MP3 module is most
important component of MP3 player unit. In design brief we provided with some of the
important requirement for MP3 module. So, we identifying which requirement of MP3 player
unit is important for design. We assign importance weightage on scale of 1% to 100%, where
1% being lowest importance and 100% being highest importance. For that purpose we choose
pie chart graph (figure 1) to illustrate importance of requirement for MP3 player unit.

To understand the importance of requirements for MP3 player, we assign importance
weightage out of 100%. For instance, MP3 module have 40% of importance in MP3 player
design. That’s how we assign importance weightage to requirements. Next, we define some
parameters, which will be used for evaluation of design solutions. We evaluate design on the
basis of configuration of components and their assembling. Additionally, evaluate on the
basis of how long unit will last, mobility of unit and cost effectiveness.
3. Design specification
We conclude some of the design requirements from design brief but for better understanding
of requirements we meet client. In this meeting we discuss requirements and how much they
important to client. After meeting, we conclude following design requirement for MP3 player
unit design.

4.1 MP3 Player unit design process
To design a MP3 player unit following steps are considered for design:
MP3 module decode the audio file into MP3 format
PIC or Arduino use as controller for MP3 player unit
Speaker use for audio files output
LCD screen enhance the usability of unit
Battery provide power to unit
4.2 Block diagram of design process
Considering design process discuss in previous section, figure 2 illustrate block diagram of
MP3 player.

4.3 Design process scheduling
In this section, we elaborate how design process will be scheduled. How much time require to
complete a scheduled task. For that purpose, we have prepared a Gantt chart to schedule our
tasks. According to our schedule our first most task is to meet with client and develop better
understanding of requirements. After developing design specification from meeting, we
conduct research analysis to find out how our project can meet standards of industry. Then
we start preparing technical design solution for project design and analyze them. In analysis
phase we evaluate these designs on the basis of predefined parameters and select a final
design for project. After that we will develop prototype of selected design and send it for
feedback. If there are suggestions of improvement in feedback than we will update model. In
the end, a final presentation will be conduct to present designed power supply to client and
get his feedback and suggestions of improvement for design.

5. Benchmarking of MP3 module

LO2 Formulate possible technical solutions to address the student-
prepared design specification specifications.
Methodology
Before designing possible technical design solution, we are devising a common methodology
for design. Our main focus is MP3 module because it is the most important component of
MP3 player unit. To play audio file in MP3 format, we need suitable MP3 module to decode
audio file into MP3 format. Then decoded audio file pass through speaker which produce
mono output of audio file. As MP3 module support microSD, so there is storing capacity
available for multiple audio files. To enhance the user friendly experience we place LCD in
our design solutions. As for microcontroller, we use PIC or Arduino for that purpose
according to each design solution.
1. Possible design solutions
We conduct research on desired specifications to find out suitable components for designing
of MP3 player unit. After that we develop mock designs for MP3 player unit and from these
designs we choose three design to develop purposes. This develop unit will evaluate on
predefined parameters and a final design selected to compliance project design.
1.1 Design solution 1
In design solution 1, we develop MP3 player unit design using GPD2846 MP3 module;
voltage regulator; 220K resistor; speaker; push buttons; battery; and connecting wires. The
figure 5 illustrate the diagram of design solution 1 where we connect push buttons with
GPD2846 module to control audio files and volume. We use battery of 9V with voltage

regulator to bring voltage to 3.3V and 0.1μF capacitor use to filter noise. We carried out our
design solution 1 on breadboard using jumper wires. During testing of design solution, we
observe that voltage regulator do not properly regulate the suppy.

1.2 Design solution 2
In design solution 2, we develop MP3 player unit design using DFPlayer DFR0299; TP4056
charging board; 3.5mm audio jack; micro switch; 1000 mah li-ion battery; and capacitor
10μF/50V. The DFR0299 MP3 module is small in size and compact but has some useless
headers. To make it fit within box we remove some headers. The first thing we did is connect
charging board with battery. Then we attach MP3 module with charging board and soldering
switches, headphone jack with module using jumper wires. The figure 6 illustrate the circuit
diagram of design solution 2. We observe during testing that this design does not fulfil the
criteria of user friendly.

1.3 Design solution 3
In design solution 2, we develop MP3 player unit design using 4D Systems SOMO-II MP3
module; 4DUino; 4ohm 3W speaker; breadboard; USB power input; and jumper wires. As
illustrate in appendix 1, first we connect SOMO-II module with 4DUino. The 4DUino
module is Arduino compatible module with built in display. The ATmega32U4
microcontroller is heart of this module and provide an array of display functionalities. The
SOMO-II is an audio module which able to play MP3 and WMA audio files. This module
accessorize with microSD card slot as well as USB flash drive support. After connecting
these two components, we connect 3W speaker with SOMO-II module. When every
component is assembled according then we turn on our develop design. During test phase of
design we observe smooth operation of design solution 3.
2. Evaluation of designs
In previous section we discuss briefly about three design solutions. To select a final design
for MP3 player unit we evaluate these designs on predefined parameters. The parameters for
evaluation are longevity of unit, mobility of unit, configuration and assembling, cost
effectiveness, and ease of use. We scale these parameter on scale of 1-10, where 1 being
lowest rating and 10 being highest rating.

3. Selection of final design solution
We briefly discuss each design solution with its shortcomings. Then evaluate them on the
basis of predefined parameters. After evaluations we find out that design solution 3 dominate

other two designs so we choose design solution 3 as final design for MP3 player unit design
(Smith, 1985).
4. Tool used for designing
Fritzing is used for circuit design
AutoCAD used for PCB and enclosure box design
5. Improvement suggestions
After selecting design 3 as final design, we send it to project manager for feedback on design.
The feedback receive with the suggestion is to add headphone jack in design. We design an
updated circuit and keep it for client opinion for design. After our design approved we start
developing prototype of our design and test it. It passes every test we perform on it.

1. Industry-standard engineering technical design
To compliance with industrial engineering standard, we conduct proper research to find out
suitable components for final design. The components used for module design shown in
figure 8.
