Introduction
Communication refers to the exchange of information to provide the flow of information
through the use of various media channels and focuses on developing understanding between
different people and departments (Samovar et al, 2017). The focus of the report is to highlight
the current communication practices at Mr Fishy and will also address the strategies to
overcome the communication barriers and will identify the communication challenges at the
restaurant. It will also reflect upon the general theories of organization communication for
addressing the issues faced by the staff at Mr Fishy.
Literature Review
In accordance to Mehrabian (2017), communication allows exchanging the information and
develops the flow of information for developing understanding and creating clarity of
thoughts and expression. It is used to bridge the gap between the individuals and effectively
manage the management functions. The purpose of communication at Mr Fishy restaurant is
to deliver the right information to the right person and create the flow of information from top
to bottom. It will help the restaurant manager and the staff to exchange their opinions, ideas
and will allow to the manager to instruct the staffs in an effective manner. The purpose of the
communication is to alter the behaviour and attitude of employees and enhance the
productivity of the restaurant through the essay flow of information and actively responding
to change (Mehrabian, 2017).
In order to communicate at Mr Fishy restaurant, the basic principles must be followed which
includes clarity and consistency in information. This will help in eliminating the confusion
and focuses on using simple words. It also applies the principle of integration to integrate the

efforts of all the staff towards the achievement of the common goal. Another principle is to
pay attention to the actions of the staff and manager to make the communication effective and
minimize the human relation problems between the staff (Fogel, 2017).
Application of the organization communication principles will help the Mr Fishy manager to
increase the interaction between the British and the non-British staff and integrate their
efforts towards the common goal. Effective listening will encourage the staff members to
provide their opinions and in turn, will motivate them to work harder and will improve the
industrial relations. The information collected through communication will aid in decision
making and will promote efficiency at the restaurant (Fogel, 2017).
The above discussed principles will help Mr Fishy staff members to effectively communicate
and understand the differences in culture and perceptions of all the staff members at the
restaurant
In accordance with the views of Max Weber, the classic organizational theory states that
organizations possess clear roles and responsibilities and hence the communication is
structured and hierarchical. This theory stresses strict rules and distribution of power to
reduce ambiguous situations and provides clarity in roles and responsibilities. The application
of the above-mentioned theory will help the managers to equally divide the roles and
responsibilities and will allow Mr Fishy staff members to work efficiently (Shafritz, Ott and
Jang, 2015).
Communication practices at Mr Fishy
It was analyzed that the members at the meeting were having the confidence to express their
problems and the managers were also effectively listening to points expressed by them. The
tone of voice and the body language of the employees were quite impressive. The managers

at Mr Fishy were open-minded and also possess the empathy to understand the issues faced
by the employees and effectively addressing the issues faced by them (Jackson et al, 2017).
Apart from the effective communication practices, it was also recorded in the meeting that
the employees were not friendly and were not able to communicate effectively due to
differences in the culture and the languages. Their gestures reflected that they were highly
dissatisfied and were facing various physical disabilities in communicating at the meeting. I
realized that the employees were not showing interest at the meeting and were getting
distracted due to the difference in the perceptions. The postures and the body language
reflected by the employees were making the communication less effective (Jackson et al,
2017).
The employees were also facing emotional barriers as the hotel consists of British and non-
British staff so they are from different religions, ages, and cultures. The difference in age
group created personality differences and created difficulty for the employees to express their
opinions. The employees also face the issues on unfamiliar accents which in turn lead to false
assumptions and created misunderstandings among the employees. I faced the challenge of
communicating with the employees through the use of complicated words which in turn
created misunderstanding and affects the functioning of the hotel (Punch, 2016).
From the above scenario, it is reflected that Mr Fishy faces the barriers and challenges in
effective communication due to high cultural differences and difficulty in understanding of
the languages. The difference in age group creates barriers to physical disabilities and false
assumptions. They also faced the psychological barrier because the employees were feeling
stressed and were not able to communicate effectively. They faced the issue in negotiation
and were not able to express their opinions (Punch, 2016).

Practical strategies to overcome communication barriers
In order to overcome the above-discussed barriers, it becomes imperative for the restaurant to
develop the workable strategies that will reduce the communication barriers and also
develops the principals based upon which the communication will be done.
Considering the communication barriers at Mr Fishy, the sender must focus on the content,
tone and language use in delivering the message. It must not use excessive technical language
and should be aware of the language of the receiver so as to avoid the misconceptions in the
understanding of the language. The content of the message must be useful for the receiver so
that the interest of the receiver can be maintained and in turn, leads to effective
communication (Quintanilla and Wahl, 2018).
In order to drive effective communication, the managers at Mr Fishy must be empathetic and
must be honest with the employees to maintain the satisfaction of the employees and
developing their confidence to express their opinions and must use affirming responses to
show gratitude to the employees for putting their input and creating positive working
environment at the restaurant (Quintanilla and Wahl, 2018).
The restaurant must focus on providing the flexibility to the employees to undertake the
actions and the managers must focus on providing constructive feedback to the employees to
develop strong relations and further motivate the employees to be more committed towards
the restaurant. The restaurant must focus on cultural awareness and providing training to the
staff members to create clarity in communication and avoiding the misconception among the
diverse staff members (Phutela, 2015).
The restaurant must focus on designing the organization structure where the employees must
be given the flexibility to act in accordance with their understanding and must also be

engaged in decision making. This will motivate the staff and will encourage them to create a
friendly environment and develop respect for each other.
It becomes imperative for the team members to use the appropriate language and avoid the
use of jargon for reducing the complexity in the understanding of communication. The
restaurant must adopt a formal communication structure under which the information will
flow from top to bottom and will further aid the staff members to communicate with their
supervisors. This will reduce the role of the top management and will avoid the rumours at
the restaurant (Barnwell, 2015).
The restaurant must create an effective communication channel for providing ease to the
physically disabled employees and boosting their confidence through the adoption of new
communication channels that creates efficiency in communication. However, it becomes
imperative for the restaurant to effectively implement the communication strategies and must
adopt the principles for reducing the communication barriers faced by the staff members and
the managers. It must focus on embracing diversity and providing cultural and language
awareness to reduce misconceptions and create a positive working environment (Yanaprasart,
2016).
Conclusion
From the above discussion, it is crucial to note that the differences in culture, age, and
languages create complexity at Mr Fishy restaurant because the staff members were not able
to communicate effectively and further created false assumptions. It was analyzed at the
meeting that the employees were not able to express their emotions due to lack of empathy
among the mangers and differences in perceptions of the staff members

used in communication and must reduce physical disabilities through the adoption of new
modes of communication. The managers must use the principals of effective communication
