Analysis of Zanele Muholi's Faces and Phases: A Sociology Report

Question 1
Empowerment refers to liberty and authority to live a life of choice which is full of dignity. I
often meet with individuals belonging to the underprivileged sections of the society and tell them
that they are living in a free country; they can practice their choices and live a respectful life at
the same time.
Question 2
Zanele Muholi mainly works for the empowerment of the members of a small LGBT community
in Africa. These individuals also work as a crew member with Zanele, most of them are
graduates from “The Market Photo Workshop.” Zanele sponsors their education and other needs
which are necessary for survival.
Question 3
Zanele is working on a project under the title “Faces and Phases.” It is her strong belief that
ordinary persons can also have an interesting history to attract the attention of the masses. To
substantiate her thought process, she is capturing the faces and times of a bunch of individuals
after regular intervals. She wants to complete a book where she can showcase the life of these
characters in chronological order and spread the message that ordinariness of life may also have
its share of greatness; all we need is to capture it in detail.
Question 4
The black people in Africa, especially from the LGBT community lived a torturous life where
atrocities like curative rape and others forced them to fight a battle of resistance and prove their
human existence (Muholi, 2018). Zanele wants to connect the ongoing battle against Apartheid

with some sophisticated weapons, where she can leave her footsteps in the history of the place
where she is living.
Question 5
The launch of Defiance campaign in the year 1951, is an event that inspires me to think
creatively while capturing our times. The present battles that we are undertaking against
apartheid are sophisticated battles that have their roots in the Defiance campaign.
