Analysis of Canadian Culture: Perspectives from Interviews and Studies

Policy of Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity:
In the year 1988 the Parliament of Canada had introduced the Canadian Multiculturalism
Act, in an orientation to preserve and enhance the multicultural practice within the country. The
preamble has highlighted that as a country Canada will provide equal benefit and protection to
all the people of the country, irrespective of their class, race or color. (Joshee et al., 2016). In this
notion, it is important to mention that the government or the parliament of the country has also
stated that the ethnic cultural groups of the country, or the culture of the aboriginals of the
country will be preserved as well (Winter, 2015).
However, the people of the country has a complete different take on this. I had taken two
interviews in order to gain a perspective of Canadian culture according to the people of the
country. To understand the perspective of the people of the country I decided to interview people
form my country. One of the interviewee is a student and the other one is holding a good position
in a multinational organization of the country. According to the student, the concept of Canadian
culture has no existence. He stated that, people belonging to other countries than the first country
are immigrants and therefore they are treated as immigrants only. Therefore, the identity of the
person is automatically attached to the background or to the place of origin of the person. The
cultural attribute which are attached to each of the individuals are characterized by the cultural
expressions of the place of origin of the person. Therefore, as I understood from the interview,
there is no universal idea of Canadian culture as per my interviewee, but there are a number of
cultural attributes that are practiced and celebrated by the people of the country, and these
cultural attributes are essentially referred to as the regional culture. Therefore, according to him,
the term Canadian culture does not exist, rather what exits is a cultural mosaic in the country. He

said that due to a cultural mix, there is also a lack of universal Canadian identity, and that there is
no identity of the country, rather the people are identified by their place of origin.
However, my second interview was all the more interesting, as I had interviewed an
Indian man. Upon asking about the culture of the country he said that, the culture of Canada is
very interesting and exciting, thus ensuring that the country holds a particular culture. He stated
that, since the country is very accepting and welcoming, therefore, it provides a positive warmth
to all those residing here, and therefore, allows all the members of the country to celebrate their
cultural aspects and attributes. The country equally promotes all the culture thus, respecting the
factor of diversity. Therefore, according to him, the interesting part is that almost every day,
every one or the other people from different cultural background celebrates their cultural
attributes.
Therefore, from these two interviews it can be stated that the Canadian culture is
basically a way of life that exists within the country which is characterized by diversity and
acceptability.
