Introduction
Professional values are regarded as the standards of performance. It provides
parameter for appraising the beliefs or the attitudes that make significant influence over the
behavior. The development of the professional values is a continuous. This long process is
influenced by several professional and personal factors (Parandeh, Khaghanizade,
Mohammadi & Nouri, 2015). The following reflective writing will aim to summaries the
factors that influenced the development of my professional values in the nursing profession
and my futures goals to excel in this profession.
Choice of Nursing
I wanted to do something in my professional career that is very challenging yet
demanding, at the same time is interesting, and will make a difference in the daily life of
people. In the nursing professional, you get an opportunity to deal with different aspects of
patients' care like the mental and physiological health and I enjoy this variety in my routine.
Through college and during my stay in the nursing school, my interest in nursing and
commitment to this field further became stronger. I gradually realized that I also had an propr
aptitude for the work. I think that my passion for interacting with different people and my
ability to narrate things clearly in both non-technical and technical language, help me to
prosper as an efficient nurse.
The Faye Glenn Abdullah’s drives 12 Nursing Problems Theory guides my personal
philosophy of nursing. According to this theory, nursing is an amalgamation of art and
science that molds the attitudes and the intellectual competencies along with technical skills
of the nursing professionals into desire and professional ability to help healthcare service

hardships, discoveries, caring, ingenuity, compassion, education and associated leadership.
The preliminary history of nursing mainly preach that in order to improve the health status of
the patient, both the psychological, physiological and the surrounding environmental
conditions must be taken into consideration (Fowler, 2017). This approach helped me to
understand the essence of nursing deals with comprehensive healthcare that encompass both
the emotional and physical well-being. Thus while developing patient-centered care plan; I
focus on both the mental and physical needs of the patients.
Under the political aspect of nursing Woodward, Smart and Benavides-Vaello (2016),
are of the opinion that nursing is the biggest medical profession in the world with 4 million
nurses working in the United States only. Such that such nurses have the profound potential
in influencing the policy development and the underlying politics in the global scale. As per
the essence of nursing profession, the nurses play an important role in the policy development
and thus influencing the politics towards the channelization of the funds coming from the
government. Under my professional domain of the nursing profession, I will indulge in the
policy planning for the healthcare improvement as a potential stakeholder.
According to the American Nursing Association (ANA) (2019), the code of ethics in
the nursing profession is divided into the nine different provision. The two ethical provisions
for the nursing practice that influence significant my professional career include provision 1
and provision 3. According to provision 1, it is the duty of the nursing professionals to
practice with utmost compassion and respect for the inherent dignity and worth along with

helped me to understand the importance of the development of therapeutic relationship with
the patient while protecting their ethical rights.

The nursing scope and standards of practice in ANA is described under the “who”,
“what”, “where”, “when”, “why” and “how”. Under “who” registered nursing professionals
(RN) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) mainly constitutes the principal
population. “What” signifies role of the nurses under the nursing professional practice like
protection, promotion and optimization of health and the skill to prevent illness among the
healthcare service users through health advocacy and developing person-centered care plan
by highlighting the clinical priority. “where” signifies that wherever there is a patient under
an urgent need of care. “when” signifies that need to increase the nursing knowledge and the
compassion towards nursing practice. “Why” deals with achievement of the positive patient
outcome (ANA, 2018).
My personal values and beliefs are defined by this professional standards highlighted
by the ANA. While giving care to the patient, I first indulge in the effective communication
with the patient by the use of my interpersonal communication skills. I first introduce myself
followed by knowing the concerns associated with the patients. Use of effective
communication skills helps in developing therapeutic relationships with the patients and thus

their family members I will use both verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Under non-
verbal communication skills, I will employ active listening and positive body language in
promote active listening and this helps me to promote the developing of therapeutic
relationships. I will mainly use non-technical language while interacting with the patients and
their family members and listen to their concerns with compassion. While interacting with
doctors and other healthcare professionals, I will prefer to use technical language and convey
my message in a concise manner. I will prefer using written communication with the
healthcare staffs by the process of documentation. Going forward I am planning to refine my
communication skills further by taking training under an experienced yet professional nurse.
