Lanham remains census-designated place and an unincorporated community
in Prince George’s county. There remain a lot of parks in Lanham. Living in
Lanham provides inhabitants a suburban feel and many people own their
homes. Many young professionals and families that live in Lanham as well as
occupants tend to be open-minded. The Present Carrollton station and an
Amtrak station remain across the capital Beltway. Doctor Community
Hospital remains located in Lanham. In Lanham, the United State Postal
service runs the Seabrook Post Office.

What is the age of the houses? Describe type of construction
material, appearance, and general condition. Do you see single

family housing? Multi-family housing?
There are different types of housing in Lanham such as low income housing
for the poor. Some houses are brand new, and others are older. Some of the
houses that are in Lanham are well-maintained by the communities. Some of
the house cost even more than $700,000 in Lanham. Most of the houses are
occupied by families.

Where do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there
and what hours of the day?
In Lanham, there are a lot of parks which most of the people hang out. The
Lanham area provides a senior center, reinforced by the park district. There
are also restaurants and big hotels in Lanham. Most of the people often meet
in these restaurants and big hotels (Scott & Lee, 2018). Most of the people
especially the adult often hang out in neighboring places such as National
center. This place remains an urban planning gem, with good open space,
major monuments, and walking paths. There is also museum complex which
attract most of the people.

Is this a “thriving” community or does it look “run down?” Is
there new or ongoing construction? Businesses and Industries
coming to the area? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas
clean and well-kept? Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti?
Lanham remains one of the thriving communities in United State. There are a
lot of industries and business in the area. Some of the infrastructure that can
be seen in the area is the United State Postal Service that serves the entire
community.

What places for employment are there is this area? Name the
businesses and industries in this area.

The place for employment in Lanham are publisher Rowman and Littlefied,
shopper food and pharmacy, software company focus, and EdTech Company.
There are also some restaurants, shops and hotels that perform well in the
community.
● Transportation How to people get from one place to another? Is public transportation
available? How timely is it? Personal autos? Bikes? Walking?
As with most sections of the country in United State, vehicles remain the
most common mode of transportation that most people use in Lanham to
travel to varies places such as places of employment. Most of the people use
public transport to go to work. Some of the people also walk and use their
bikes to move from one place to another.

Ethnicity
What is the majority racial group represented? What is the majority
ethnic group represented? Describe the distribution of gender,
approximate ages, single families, multiple families, generational
families?
The individuals residing in Lanham are mainly African American. The overall
number of individuals in the late twenties to early forties remains extremely
large whereas the actual number of middle aged more so for the adults is
large. There are a very small number of families and a huge number of single
parents. All the people marked were clean as well as looked healthy. The
actual number of kids under eighteen living in Lanham is large.
● Cultural
Characteristics
What cultural similarities or differences do you observe?
Languages spoken? Clothing? Ethnic eating places? Culturally-
based celebrations? Signs in languages other than English?
Most of the people in Lanham used English as the official language. Other
people use Spanish, Indo-European languages and Pacific Islander
Languages. There are many culturally based celebrations. For instance Greek
cultural Festival. The culture and art of Lanham remain varied. There is a mix
of northern and southern American cultures. There remain several Music

festivals in Lanham.

Healthy Behaviors
What healthy lifestyle behaviors do you observe? Do you see
people exercising, wearing helmets when biking, seat belt usage,
using trash cans for garbage disposal, healthy eating practices?
If you are enjoying the age of retirement or you are nearing the age of
retirement. You will notice that Lanham is a special place for those under
retirement age. Many retirees select to eradicate the risk of ice and snow,
trekking to the well-known southern spot such as Florida and Arizona.
According to the seniors living in the area, Lanham remains a special space
because of educational opportunities and lovely weather. Some people in
Lanham also ride bikes as a mean of transport and this acts as a form of
exercise.

What unhealthy lifestyle behaviors do you observe? Do you see
people practicing risky lifestyle behaviors such as drinking
alcoholic beverages, smoking, fighting? Do you see signs of
violence, gang activity, drug use, criminal activity, and bars on
doors and/or windows? Do you see overweight/underweight
persons? Do you see children unattended playing out in the
streets? Do you see any signs of homelessness? Street people?
Describe gender, age, and race/ethnicity of persons observed.
Smoking of Cigarette is one of the main causes of preventable morbidity and
mortality in Lanham. Smoking in this area causes heart disease, cancer and
even death. There is homeless people and street drug usage in Lanham. In
Lanham, there are a lot of homeless shelters which cater the need of the poor
people without homes. There remain some obese as well as overweight
individuals in the area.

Indications
Do you see any signs of homelessness? Street people? Describe
gender, age, and race/ethnicity of persons observed.
There are some forms of homelessness in Lanham. This is why there are
presences of homes for the homeless people in Lanham. There are also some
street people in the region. Most of the people that are living below the
poverty line are black Americans. They also occupy a major portion of the
land.

● Social Services Do you see evidence of recreation centers, parks, and social services?
For services that are not available, how far must persons travel to

There are a lot of parks, recreation centers and social services in Lanham
(Herbst, 2017). The services that are not in the local area can easily be found
in the nearby places because of accessible public transport.
● Health Services Do you see evidence of health (Hospitals, Dr’s Offices, and Clinics)
and mental health services? Describe each. Are there any signs of
alternative services in the area, such as healers (curanderos),
herbalists, herbal stores, palm readers, acupunctures, and
chiropractors? For services that are not available, how far must
persons travel to access these services?
The major health services In Lanham is known as Doctor community
Hospital. Doctor Community Hospital remains a medical as well as surgical
hospital situated in Lanham (Henderson et al.2017). It offers high quality as
well as comprehensive healthcare to the people.

Police Services
Do you see any fire and police services/equipment/officers? Where
are the closest fire and/or police stations?
There are many police stations that are located near Lanham. Some of the
police stations near Lanham include Prince George’s County police
Department, 5th District Police Station, Metropolitan Police Department and
2nd District Police Department. There is also fire service in Lanham. Example
of fire service is West Lanham Hills Volunteer FD (WLHVFD). This fire
department was formed in the year 1993 (Reinhardt & Chatsiou, 2019). The
department is made up of two firehouses. The two houses include Company
48 and Company 28.

Where is the nearest public library? Discuss the Schools and

One of the main public schools in the area that serves Lanham CDD is Prince
George’s county. The residents of Lanham remain divided between Seabrook
Elementary School (SES) and James McHery Elementary school (JMES). All
residents remain zoned to JMES as well as Duval High School (Talboys,
2016). The other schools in the area include Gaywood Elementary School,
Magnolia Elementary School and private Catholic School. One of the main
colleges in the area is Washington Bible College.
● Religions What signs of religion do you see? Discuss the types of churches,
mosques, temples? What services are offered by these churches,
e.g., Day Care, Mother’s Day Out, Summer Camps, Languages
Classes, Citizenship Classes, Food Banks, Clothing, other.
There are a lot of Christian churches distributed all over the City. These
churches conduct most of their services over the weekend. Most of the people
often attend the church services. Some of the Christian churches include
Capital Christian Fellowship, Dyspring Community Church, and Church of
the Open Bible.
Business &
Industry
Describe stores and shops available in the community, e.g., grocery
stores, gas stations, department stores. What type of business climate
exists? Manufactures? Light or heavy industry? Large employers?
Small business owners? Retail? Hospitality industry? Do people have
to seek employment elsewhere? Is this considered a “bedroom
community”- where people work outside this community but live here?
In Lanham, there are a lot of shops and stores. There are also hair salons, nail
shops, as well as other small businesses. The other companies located in
Lanham include Trandes, OmniPrint, and Doctors Community Hospital. The
area also has a company known as Science System & Application.

The political temperature in Lanham suggests that the people will vote again
soon. This is because the political temperature in the area is very high though
there are no billboards and posters to be seen in open places.

There is Lanham Media in the area. This remains a communication agency
which creates extensive media exposure for customers. Lanham media
attempts to change the lives of the people through smart innovation, improved
health as well as enriching communities.

1. Interview with fireman or police officer
I talked to a police officer from the Prince George’s County police
Department. The initial of the Police officer is CA.
˃ Community’s Health issues: C. Alfa (personal communication,
September 25, 2019) suggests that Some of the health issues that the
police officer about were behavioral health, cancer and metabolic
syndrome.
˃ Community’s Safety issues: The police officer confirmed that the
security of Lanham is not safe in some places (C. Alfa, personal
communication, February 25, 2019). There are some theft cases being
promoted by the presence of street children in the region. Some of the
safe places include Crofton, Bowie and Odenton.
˃ Strengths of the Community: According to the Police Officer,
Most of the individuals love Lanham. The love for the community is the

main source of strength for the community.
2. Interview with librarian, school teacher, school nurse or
administrator
I talked to a hospital Nurse from Doctors Community Hospital. The
initial of the Nurse are GB.
˃ Community’s Health issues: The nurse mentioned that some of
the health issues are behavioral health and cancer (G,B, personal
communication, September 26, 2019)
˃ Community’s Safety issues: The nurse also mentioned that some
of the places are safe but other places are not safe for staying in
Lanham (G,B, personal communication, September 26, 2019).
˃ Strengths of the Community: According to the nurse, the main
strengths of the community are families and close relatives. GB said
that most of the families offer support to their patients.

From the information collected from the two participants, community health
concerns for Lanham include behavioral health, cancer and metabolic
syndrome (G, B, personal communication, September 26, 2019).
Though most of the people can raise money to cater for health care,
some cannot afford healthcare.
According to the police officer, the security of the region is not well
maintained. Some places are not good for staying because most
people feel insecure in those areas. Other places are safe due to the
presence of police station in in those areas.
The strength of the community according to CA Is the true love for the
community. However, GB argued that the strength s of the community
remains derived from the families and close relatives.
