LEADERSHIP ANALYSIS 4
INTRODUCTION
Since Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014, he has been in news for his bold
initiatives, inspiring speeches, foreign travels as well as his jumbo rallies. Some of criticised
his working style while some experts have compared him with his predecessors. Some have
called him a true leader whereas some have even labelled him as a dictator. However, the
question here is what exactly his leadership style is. We have tried to peel his leadership style
onion using various arguments as we go along.
NARENDRA MODI AS GUJARAT’S CHIEF MINISTER
Before Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India, he was working as the
Chief Minister of Gujarat. Through the initiatives taken by him, Gujarat outperformed a lot of
other states on various parameters like technology, infrastructure, etc. Many government
delegates who interacted with him were impressed by his clarity of thought (Hasnain, 2015).
People realized that he does as he preaches and this is one of the things that set the stage for
him during the PM elections.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
It is essential that a leader has clear objectives and also generate awareness about it.
Modi has clearly talked about his goals since the time he was campaigning during elections.
He thinks long term. Furthermore, he not only strategizes but also tries to implement it. And
till date, the initiatives taken by him fall in line with those goals and objectives. Be it opening
of bank accounts or issuing warnings to the tax payers; be it demonetization or gas subsidy
initiative, everything aligns with his objective of helping the poor and eradicating corruption
from India. He is also innovative with his approach; e.g. – his use of social media like Twitter
or radio (Mann ki baat) to convey his thoughts to the nation and stay connected with common
man. This only proves that he is a strategic leader and a detailed planner.

LEADERSHIP ANALYSIS 5
LEADER – FOLLOWER RELATIONSHIP
Modi promises to be a transformational leader who motivates his followers to
perform beyond expectation by raising the followers' confidence levels and by providing
support for developing high levels of performance (Burns, 1978). He is authoritarian and
gets personally involved and directly supervises the people even at the grassroots level.
However while doing so, he ensures to make his team players believe that they are vital to the
project and that their efforts in accomplishing it would be highly appreciated. He also inspires
his followers through his ‘doer’ reputation. When other ministers in his office see him
working tirelessly and with zeal for long hours, they are inspired by him to work with the
same level of enthusiasm.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Excellent oratory skills play a very important role in the making of an effective
leader. And we have seen the dynamic public speaking skills of Narendra Modi during his
various speeches – be it during PM elections or even recently during BJP’s campaign in UP
elections. He has even managed to amaze thousands of people during his speeches abroad,
say at Madison square in the US. He has the ability to get people engaged, convinced and
inspired through his oration.
RISK TAKING ABILITY
Modi is a risk taker and truly believes in ‘Greater risk, greater gain’. And this can be
seen from some of his drastic initiatives. A number of times, he has done what no other
leader came close to doing in the last so many years. Demonetization is a very big example of
this during which he suddenly and unexpectedly announced banning of Rs. 500 and 1000
notes in November 2016 in order to control black money. This move was criticized by almost
all the opposition parties saying that it’s the common man who is suffering. However, the

recent UP elections proved that PM and his ministers were successful in convincing the
common man that they have been working for the greater good.
COLLABORATION
From various instances, it is evident that he is a collaborative leader who wants all
other ministers or even common man to participate in nation building. When he urged the
people to let go off the LPG subsidy or when he established the Niti Ayoga through which
Chief Ministers could contribute to policy making for the nation, he was inviting them to
partner in this noble cause. And not only within the nation, he is also collaborating with other
countries to work towards mutual development.
CONCLUSION:
The purpose of this analysis was to assess the leadership style of Narendra Modi.
While doing so, we identified various parameters on which a leader could be judged and then
tried evaluating Modi’s performance on those parameters. We understand that a leader must
have clear goals and must take initiatives to meet those. Through our various arguments that
not only is Modi a strategic leader, but he is also taking steps to accomplish the goals that he
has set for this nation. A leader must not only lead his team but also inspire them to do their
best. From the examples that we have given, we comprehend that even though Narendra
Modi has an authoritarian style of working, he has transformational leadership qualities. A
leader with good public speaking skills can involve and motivate the people. This is evident
from his various speeches. Just as a good leader must not be afraid of taking risks, in the
same way Modi’s various initiatives show that he is not risk averse. A good leader must not
solely keep taking decisions but must get everyone involved in decision making process.
From a number of examples that we discussed above, we conclude that Modi has a
