For example, if we take medical department, that is headed by a doctor who is highly talented
and has long experience in the medical field. So he supervises and advises other doctors.
Then if we take nursing department, this department id headed by a nurse who is talented and
has long experience in nursing field. So he supervises and advices other nurses who are working
under this department.
If we take pharmacy department, this department is headed by a pharmacist who is highly
skilled and has long experience in pharmacy field. So he supervises and advises staffs who is
working under that department. Likewise, each department is heads by a head.
However, NHS is fully owned by government and controlled by health of ministry. So NHS
should work under health ministry rules and regulations. Each department heads also can’t
make decisions on their own. They can implement decisions only after get permission from
health ministry and should work according to their instructions.
Interrelationship between national hospital of Sri Lanka functional departments and there
advantages and disadvantages
1. HR department coordination with other departments
As mentioned earlier NHS provides training for under graduates and post graduates trainees of
the faculty of medicine. So HR department gets highly talented doctors through it. At the same
time HR department recruits nurses for nursing department from the school of nurse training.
And then HR department recruits staffs for other departments also based on health of ministry
rules and regulations.
Examples for NHS HR department functions
Hiring, nurse recruitment, employee orientation, personal management, benefits and
compensation management, counselling, claims handling, training and monitoring, professional
development programs, ministry of health regulations education, ensure work place safety,
employee meetings etc.
Advantage and disadvantage
HR department coordination with other departments leads to hire talented staffs for all
departments according to the regulations of ministry of health. This will help to do each
department of activities effectively. Because NHS provides health services to public so each and
every employee should have proper knowledge to handle patients. therefore, HR department

of NHS highly concerns about recruiting staffs for medical departments, nursing department,
pharmacy department, radiology department and pathology department.
If HR department doesn’t have proper coordination with other departments, then HR
department can’t recruit suitable staffs for each department. And they can’t make the all staffs
working towards with the vision and mission of the hospital.
2. Medical department and pharmacy department coordination
Medical department’s doctors check the patients and write down the suitable drugs
which can cure certain diseases examine patients and prescribe appropriate
medications to treat a specific disease (doctor prescription). Then doctors give that
prescription to directly to pharmacy department or patients. Then patients can collect
those prescribed drugs from pharmacy department.
If medical department and pharmacy department has good relationship, pharmacy
department can give the drugs to patients without any issues. patients also can get
the drugs as per the doctor’s prescription. So health issues of the patients will recover
soon.
If medical department and pharmacy department fails to maintain good relationship,
then errors may occur. E.g. pharmacy department gives the wrong drugs that are not
mentioned in the doctor’s prescription. Then it will effect patients’ health badly. These
kind of errors will be considered as punishable offence. so it will make bad impression
on hospital services.
3. Medical department and nursing department
Nursing department guides the patients as per the doctors informations. Nurses helps
doctors to do the checkups on patients. Then if there are any further checkups have to
be conducted on patients, nurses do those tests according to the doctors’ orders. E.g.
taking bold samples, checking the pressure and sugar level etc. And if patients are
admitted in the hospital nursing department should take care of those patients. Daily
they check the admitted patients pressure level, sugar level, temperature and give
medicines according to the medical department information.
If medical and nursing department has good coordination nurses can take care of
patients well and patients health issues also will be cured soon.
Document Page
If it is not, then nurses won’t be having any ideas about how to take care of patients
because they do their works according to the doctors’ orders only. These kind of
issues will make bad impression on medical department and nurses department
services.
4. Information department and medical department
Patients make appointments to consult doctor in information department.
Information department give details regarding medical department doctor’s
visiting hours for consultations. So here medical department informs information
department about their visiting hours to meet patients.
If information department and medical department has good coordination, The
Department of Information can provide patients with accurate information about the
times that doctors visit to the hospital. So patients don’t need to wait for a long time
to consult doctors. they can come to the hospitals in accurate time according to
information department details.
If those two departments don’t have proper coordination, patients can’t get accurate
details about doctors visiting hours. This will affect the reputation of the hospital
negatively.
5. Medical department radiology department and nursing department coordination
If patients need to take ex rays, medical department send the patients to radiology
department. And medical department give those informations to nursing department
also so nurses take the patients to radiology department. Once radiology department
took ex rays, radiology department and medical department discuss about certain
patient ex trays to find out the health issue.
If medical department and radiology department has good relationship, doctors can
find out the issues of patients through ex trays and discussing with radiology
department experts. Therefore, patients’ health problem will be recovered soon.
If it is not medical department can’t understand the patients issue exactly. When
patients’ health condition is serious ex tray department should give ex trays report to
medical department as soon as possible. Otherwise medical department can’t start
any treatments on patients. So patients might think radiology and medical department
functions are not effective.

6. Medical department and pathology department
If medical department wants to identifies patients’ health situations further, doctors
will ask patients to take some tests like urine tests, blood tests, biopsy tests etc. These
kid of tests are one by pathology department can be called as laboratory service. So
medical department send the patients to pathology department to do those tests.
Sometimes doctors take sample from patients’ body and send it to pathology
department. E.g. biopsy testing.
If those departments have good coordination, pathology department can identify
exactly that what kind of test medical department wants to do on patients’ blood,
urine, or biopsy sample and can give correct report to medical department.
If it is not, pathology department doesn’t know exactly what kind of tests has to do on
the patients’ samples. So it will make unnecessary delays in find out the problems.
7. Medical department and operations department
Sometimes doctors have to do surgeries on patients to recover their issues or to take
samples (biopsy), medical department contacts with operations department and sets
the set time as well to conduct operations. Then operations department brings the
patients to operation theatre and do the rest of arrangements according to the
doctors’ information.
If medical department informs clearly about the type of operation and operation time,
operation department can arrange the all needed things to do the operations
perfectly as planned time. So operations will be done successfully without any issues.
If it is not, operational department won’t be having enough time to prepare the
operation theatre. so operations can’t be carried out in planned time. Patients body
conditions also may get worse.

functions. National hospital is a government owned public organization therefore it
gives free medical services to people. Ministry of health give funds to finance
