INTRODUCTION
As a nurse, it is important to make sure that all the standards for practice are followed.
These are done so that strong relationship can be maintained with patients and the issues that are
faced by them considered in effective manner (Moon, 2013). In this assignment Standard 2 is
taken in to consideration which is Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships. Further,
use of Gibb’s Cycle of Reflection is done as a structured framework.
Gibb’s Cycle of Reflection
This is a popular model that is used for reflection. It consist of 6 stages and these are
helpful enough to make analysis of the learning that has occurred by a person (Quinton and
Smallbone, 2010). With this respect, taking the video into consideration, below given are the
stages involved in Gibb’s cycle of reflection:
Description
In accordance with the case, I was asked to examine an aged person. The information
regarding the patient provided to me was next to nothing. However, I was supposed to check out
his health condition and provide this detail to doctor. Further, this is was the first time that I had
ever met this patient. In such condition, it is important for me to consider certain steps so that I
am able to develop to maintain my professional and personal relation. In accordance with the
standards it is important for me to sustain, establish and conclude relationship in such a way that
differentiates boundaries between personal and professional relationships (Husebø, Dieckmann
and Friberg, 2013). From the nursing standards that are being followed, there are considered to
be the made in which I develop strong relationship and this is to be done with the help of
effective communication. Apart from this, values, culture, rights, and dignity should be taken in
to consideration.
Feelings
When I entered the room, patient was alone and was doing nothing. This showed that he
was not in a good condition. A person who is old need to get proper support from their relatives
so that they do not feel depressed. As per the first impression that I developed was that the
patient was not in good health. The patient had never seen me and so I introduced myself to him.
With an aim to develop healthy relation with the patient, I asked him regarding health condition.
The response given by patient was that there are fluctuations. In other words, there are both bad

and good time in health that are experienced. I was trying to make the patient feel good by
explaining the test that I am supposed to conduct. Details regarding the test are provided so that I
am able to make the patient recognise that I am an expert in the experience of their life. When
this is done, then it enables to develop trust and confidence within the mind of patients.
Evaluation
From the experiences, there are both positive and negative aspects identified with the
interaction with the patient. Talking about the good things that happened, it includes sharing of
information. At the initial stage when I shared the test that I was going to undertake, then the
patient did not hesitate. This way, helpful enough for me to examine. Further, through strong
interaction, I was able to identify that the health condition of patient was not good. In accordance
with the Standard 2, it is important for me to provide support and direct the patient in which the
things undertaken are conveyed. Further, it also requires to make sure that I advocate in behalf of
the patient in which all the doubts that they have are clarified and all information regarding
treatment are conveyed (Jayatilleke and Mackie, 2013). Moreover, I am also responsible to
develop an environment of learning and safety in which the patient is engaged with me. This is
can be done effectively when knowledge is shared and practice are carried out that supports
person-centred care. When a care provider conveys all the small details to patient, they are able
to develop trust and confidence within the mind and it enables to make them overcome the
problems in appropriate manner.
Analysis
As per the experience that I got, it can be stated that I need to have strong communication
skills, this is important as it enables to understand the situation that patient is facing. Apart from
this, one should also be able to take up decisions so that the problems that are faced by the
patients are taken into consideration (Beam, O'brien and Neal, 2010). Further, patient should not
be left out alone, it is essential that they spend time with close one or relatives. When a person
with someone, then it enables to boost up the moral and make them overcome the pain that is
faced by them. With the experiences and from the first look of the patient, I can say that patient
was not happy with the health condition faced by him. When he saw me, he was tensed in order
to know what exactly I was there to do. In this context, it was important for me to share

information. This is done so that the standards are followed in which strong relationship should
be developed with patients in which all information regarding their treatment are shared
(Jayatilleke and Mackie, 2013). Apart from this proper respect should be given to the patient and
decisions are taken by considering the preferences. Overall, it can be stated that with effective
communication, strong relationship can be developed and it makes a person feel better.
Conclusion
In accordance with the learning that is developed by me from this is that, I need to
understand the situation that is faced by patients. All these are needed to be taken into proper
consideration in which I share all the required information for the test that I have to conduct.
When these details are provided, then it becomes helpful enough for the patient to develop strong
relationship. Developing relationship is an important aspect that make a person to overcome or
reduce the pain that patients face. Proper respect should be provided to elderly people in which
consideration of pain also taken note of (Davies, 2012). Further, I have also learned that patients
should be left alone. When a patient is with someone, then it enables to reduce the pain that they
face and it also help to make the treatment effective. It is also important that all the details that
are provided by patient is conveyed to doctors so that there are collaborative practice.
Action Plan
For the next time, when such type of condition arise, I will first sit with next to patient
and ask regarding their health condition and try to find out other difficulties that many be faced
by them. Then all the details that includes the test that I have to undertake will be explained.
Further, this will also include information regarding the reason for which these tests are carried
out (Burzotta and Noble, 2011). Lastly, I will ensure them that there will other care providers
who will attending them for further examination. All these steps will be helpful enough to make
sure that strong relationship is developed with the patient in effective manner.
CONCLUSION
In accordance with the findings, it can be stated that as a nurse there are certain set of
skills and capabilities that are required. These are important as it enables to make sure that strong
relationship is developed with patients. Main focus of development by nurses should be done for

communication. With communication skills, nurses can develop understanding of the issues that
are faced and strong relationship can also be developed.
