INTRODUCTION
Patient neglect, abuse and harm refer to an action or failure to provide care that causes
unreasonable suffering, misery or harm to them. It includes by mistake harm or intentional abuse
with patients that are observed in healthcare settings (Nelson, 2016). However, it is observed that
patient neglect and harm should be strictly avoided to make sure about safeguarding of an
individual. In context of this project, it is based on the topic of Tackling neglect and abuse in
health and social care settings. This assignment will focus on purpose of carrying out study on
neglect and abuse with patient while providing them healthcare services. It will also include
skills and qualities required to conduct literature review of neglect, harm and abuse in healthcare.
The background, rationale and use methods including ethical considerations are given below.
TASK 1
Describe the purpose and process of conducting research
In context of this investigation, the major purpose is to evaluate different ways of dealing with
harm and abuse from which patients get suffered in healthcare settings. It includes the basic
criterion of analysing the actual cause of neglect and harm among patients according to which
effective rules and regulations can be establish to avoid such negative factors from hospitals
settings. However, it is necessary to identify the specific groups of patient which is mostly at risk
of neglect, harm and abuse so that they will be focussed much to protect from these aspects
properly (Morton, 2017). It is observed that different factors are responsible for increase in
patient harm or neglect which are required to be determined in order to eliminate them which
facilitate to improve the patient experience. Moreover, this study has a purpose to analyse role of
care professionals to for provide safeguarding for patients and focus on removing harm or abuse
from their hospital settings to make patient healthy and safe.
On the other hand, it has been analysed that research process includes the initial level to identify
specific topic that is ‘Tackling neglect and abuse in health and social care settings’ for the
project. It includes the criterion of evaluating different research methods which are helpful to
gather effective information to analysis the respective findings of the investigation (Pierson,
2016). However, it includes using qualitative method of research with descriptive design and
interpretivism research philosophy to conduct the investigation in proper manner. The process of
study includes use of sample for gathering information through participants and use research

articles for carrying out literature review which facilitate to more effective as well as efficient
outcomes. Moreover, the thematic analysis is used to interpret respective findings and then
conclusion is occurred with summary of outcomes along with effective recommendations for
future.
Explain the skills and qualities needed to conduct a literature review and analyse your current
skills and knowledge
The literature review includes the criterion of analysing research articles of different authors with
similar topic to review their views. It can be considered as an important part for research which
is carrying out after conducting overview, background and rationale of specific topic of
investigation. Basically, it has been analysed that several skills and abilities are required to carry
out an effective as well as efficient literature on particular research problem or topic.
Meanwhile, there are number of skills and qualities required for literature review such as critical
reading, ability to search for a topic and gain access to publications regarding selected research
problem effectively (McQueen and et. al., 2018). It consist the quality to analysing collected data
in perspective of specific research aim to achieve findings in appropriate manner. It is necessary
for a researcher to evaluate relevant data by using accurate research articles to conduct literature
review in proper way
In addition to this, I have analysed that my abilities of carrying out literature review is not much
effective because this is the first time for me to do so. It includes my skills of effectively read
and critically analysis the content which is helpful to conduct literature review properly.
However, it has been evaluated that I am not aware about legal rules and way of gaining access
to publications from where the relevant data is required to be collected for literature review. It is
necessary for me to communicate with senior researchers to gain idea and knowledge before
conducting literature review which helps to conduct the same in effective manner (Gupta, 2017).
Conduct a literature review and provide a discussion of the key terms, recent sources and
findings from your literature search that summarises the current knowledge relating to the
research topic. You must evaluate the reliability and validity of the literature.
The neglect, harm and abuse are observed in hospital settings due to several reasons which are
required to be focussed in order to provide safety to them. It includes several factors including
lack of training to staff, unaware professionals about legislations and irresponsible behaviour of
staff in healthcare organisations. However, it has been analysed that neglect and harm is mostly

observed with mental health patients because of their unconscious and severe condition. It is
observed that psychological patients were not in their conscious state due to which they are at
risk of suffering from abuse and harm (Luckock, Barlow and Brown, 2017). It involves the fact
that staff is unaware about legal regulations regarding safety and relevant punishments due to
which they feel free to harm clients when they get frustrated form patient behaviour or extra
work load.
On the other hand, my literature is reliable as the collected information is from authenticate
sources and recent published research articles were used which ensure validity of it. It includes
the utilisation of recent researchers by analysing views of different authors in order to evaluate
the gathered information.
TASK 2

CONCLUSION
The above project has been concluded that harm and neglect are threat of hospital settings which
impact negatively of condition of patient and treatment outcomes. It is necessary to make
effective policies and practices to avoid such negative factors and improve safeguarding of
services user in health and social care stings for their wellbeing.
