LO1: Examine networking principles and their protocols
P1-Discuss the benefits and constraints of different network types and standards.
There are various networking types for establishing communication such as-
Types Benefits Constraints
Peer-to-Peer This network is very
easy to set up and it is
easily managed as each
computer maintained by
itself.
It does not require an
extra cost for the server
setting.
It does not depend on the
other computers for
performing their
operations.
The security in this
network types has to be
applied to each system
separately.
No centralized server is
available for the
controlling and
managing the data
access.
Client-Server It provides scalability for
increasing the capacity
of the clients and server
individually.
This network type is
easy for maintenance as
the roles and
responsibilities are
distributed between
servers, computers, and
clients.
There is a problem of the
traffic congestion due to
a large number of the
client’s traffic which
creates many problems
and issue.
The client does not have
any resources which
exist on the server end.
Types of the network:
1. PAN (Personal Area Network)- this type network is the smallest type of network used
for the personal need and it is made up of the wireless modem used for establishing the
connection between the systems, phones, printers etc.
Benefits:
It provides a connection to the small office so the single person from the organization
can manage it easily from the single devices.
It PAN network setup is very easy therefore it get fixed easily in the small
organization.
Constraints:
It is a costly setup.
It does not provide the security as each important data is there on the network.

2. LAN (Local Area Network) - this type of network we can create LAN using the two
systems also and for larger LAN creation we can connect thousands of systems. LAN
network is created for sharing the resources among the users of the single sites.
Benefits:
It provides high-speed network connection inside the organization.
It is not so costly so the setup can be done easily.
It provides an easy resource sharing between the users of the organization through the
LAN network.
Constraints:
It is limited to a small area or to the organization only.
Any user of the access the data of any users from the LAN network.
3. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) - this type of network developed across the entire
city, college campus or for a small region. This network of MAN is larger than LAN and
the MAN network is used for connecting the several LANs together to make a large
network.
Benefits:
It is less expensive and provides good efficiency of data. It can also use to manage the
network easily in the centralized form
It provides high-speed connectivity than WAN up to 1000 Mbps of the speed.
Constraints:
As the MAN network is bigger, therefore, it becomes difficult to manage the network.
For the MAN setup, we required the technical people only such as Network
administrator or trouble-shooter.
4. WAN (Wide Area Network) – this type of network is expanded around the geographical
regions. It provides the network with more dynamic and manageable. It provides better
security to the users of the WAN network.
Benefits:
It has the centralized IT infrastructure which provides scalability to the network.
It has increased bandwidth, therefore, the speed provided by the WAN network
broadband connection is higher than other network types.
Constraints:
It requires high setup costs because the WANs network is more complicated and
complex.
The WAN network has maintenance Issues because the WAN network is bigger,
therefore, it is difficult to easily detect the failure point in the network.

P2- Explain the impact of network topology, communication, and bandwidth
requirements.
The network topology has the arrangement and the various nodes which are connected in the
system. All the types of the network topologies have been mention below:
Bus topology
Star topology
Mesh topology
Ring topology
The network topology has a significant impact on the performance of the network and the
protocols collection. The performance of the topology has its own mechanism for the
protocol. All of the mention topologies fulfills all the required needs of the small network for
establishing the connection among each node in a LAN network at a very low cost.
The communication also required a proper bandwidth for establishing a connection in the
network. For the communication purpose, there are two types of connection establishment in
the network which is connection-oriented and connectionless. If the source and destination
are communicating among each other than the network provides a standardized and improved
communication without any error inside. For better communication an appropriate allocation
of bandwidth is implemented thus the packets reached the endpoint accurately. The
presentation and communication of the sender and receiver are dependent on bandwidth.
There are various protocols which are working on the OSI layer and layers are:
Application layer
Presentation layer
Session layer
Transport layer
Network layer
Data-link layer
Physical layer

M1- Compare common networking principles and how protocols enable the
effectiveness of networked systems.
The network protocols have various characteristics which network used as guidelines such as-
access technique, types of the cable, physical topology and the speed of data transfer. Some
of the common protocols used are:
Ethernet- the Ethernet protocol is widely used in the connection of the networking
devices. The access method used in the Ethernet is known as CSMA/CD which is Carrier
Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection. By making a connection with this protocol
systems can transmit the packets to other computers in a network. The collision also
occurs in this protocol. The data can be transmitted over the twisted pair, wireless access
points, fiber optics or any coaxial cable with a speed of at least 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps.
Token Ring- the Token Ring protocol is the access method which is involved in the
token-passing. In the token ring, the signal rotates around the connected system for
establishing the connection in a network from one computer to another in a logical ring.
The speed provided by the Token Ring for transmission is between 4 Mbps to 16 Mbps.
FDDI- the FDDI stands for Fiber Distributed Data Interface which is used as a network
protocol for interconnecting two or more LAN network across a large distance. It also
involves in the token-passing by using access method. It provides a high speed over the
fiber optics cable at 100 Mbps.

LO2 Explain networking devices and operations
P3- Discuss the operating principles of networking devices and server types.
There are different types of networking devices used for performing different works of the
computer network. The networking devices used are:
Bridge- a router joins two different types of the networks then the
bridge connects two sub-networks as a portion of the same
network. Or you can think that two different floors network are
connected with the bridge network.
Repeater- a repeater works as electronic devices which amplifies
the signals received in the network. Repeater work as a device
which is used for receiving the signal and retransmitting it with
high power while covering the long distance.
Hub- it is a networking device which is used for connecting the multiple networks hosts
and used for transferring the data in the network.
Switch- the switch also works same as a hub but the switch is the more intelligent than
the hub. The switch provides more secure communication than the hub as the broadcast
domain is more than the hub device. The main purpose of the switch is to maintain CAM
(content addressable memory).
Modem- the modem stands for Modulator and Demodulator signals from transmitting the
digital data of the systems and the analog signals of the telephone lines. It also generates
binary data in the form of 1s and 0s. It carries the internet word outside without the use of
the wire.
Router- it is used for connecting two different networks together so that they can easily
communicate with each other. For example, the router can connect the private network
with the public network.
Now we come to the different types of the server used in the network. So there are various
types of the server which are configured on the networking devices for different purposes
such as:
Print server-it is used for making the communication from the client devices to the server
device.
Web server- web server works on the HTTP and checks the performance if the response
of the website is coming properly or not.
Email server- It is used for sharing and transferring the message from the sender to the
receiver using the protocol such as SMTP, POP3, and IMAP.
DNS server- it is used for converting the IP address to the domain name and domain
name to the IP address.
File server- it is used for sharing the file on the LAN network.

P4- Discuss the inter-dependence of workstation hardware with relevant
networking software.
The network infrastructure is interconnected with the software and hardware devices. All of
them are dependent on each other for performing any task. Such that if the hardware is not
present then there is no use of the software and if a software is not present then there is no use
of the hardware and we cannot manage them. Therefore for maintaining the connection, we
required a balance between both software and the hardware. The workstation hardware is
connected using the wireless mediums or by using the various cables. The hardware uses
cables such as crossover cable, twisted cables, fiber optics etc. for connecting to the LAN
network or any other networking types.
The networking software is required for managing the workstation hardware so that it can
help to install the update and patches by giving the instruction to the hardware. The software
also uses a various application such as anti-virus, firewall, and anti-malware for protecting
the hardware from different types of security risks.
