LO 1: Install, configure and test a network operating system
1.1
Operating System (OS) it’s a system of programs that coordinates all activities that take place
on a computer by efficiently using the resources.
5
Components Min requirement spec Recommended
requirement spec
Cost
CPU 1.0 GHz 32-bit (x86) 2.4 GHz £3.99
RAM 1GB of RAM at (32-bit)
2GB of RAM at (64-bit)
4GB of RAM £7.99
HDD 16GB 32-bit
20GB 64-bit
500GB £35.99
Video Card DirectX 9 graphics
device with WDDM 1.0
DirectX 11 £35.62
Total Cost £83.59
To be able to function effectively, Windows 2007 needs the best software resources. I chose
this hardware specification by considering other applications and programs that will run on the
operating system and that would surely need more resources. If the computer on which we
install the operating system is part of a network and will be connected to a server, then its HDD
capacity of 500GB will be enough.
Windows Server 2008
Components Min requirement spec Recommended

Cost
CPU 1 GHz (IA-32) 1.4 GHz

can talk about a small capacity server for a small network. A server that will connect more than 100
computers will need at least 6 or more CPUs and enough RAM to meet “clients” requirements.
While comparing Windows 7 with Windows 8 in terms of cost, the cost of the requirement for Windows
8 is higher than Windows 7. As per the requirement, Windows 7 requires 2.4 GHz CPU processor and
Windows 8 also requires the same processor. The main difference is in the hard disk drive where
Windows 7 requires only 500 GB of HD but for Windows 8 1 TB of Hard disk is requires. The cost gets an
increase in this following aspect. The cost of 1TB HDD is £37.99 and the cost of 500 GB of HDD is £35.99.
1.2
Installing the Network Operating System:
1. When we start installing the operating system we must select Language, Time and Currency format
and Keyboard input method. For this installation, I chose English as the language, English (United States)
for time format, and for the keyboard, I chose the US. For optimal system performance, it's vital that we
accurately select “Time and currency format” for the country and place where we operate the system.

install the system.

impossible to continue the installation without giving our consent and accepting the terms and

Figure 4: Custom Install
5. In the next step, we have two installation options: the first is to upgrade the already installed system
or to start installing a new one. In this case, having no system already installed, I will install a system
from scratch and I will choose the second option "Custom Install".
6. Further on in the installation process, I will have to choose where I want to install the system on the
disk. To install this system, I only allocated 25.0 GB and I will choose this space for installation. At this
stage of the installation, we have the option to add an extra partition and/or format the HDD by clicking
on "Drive options".
