AI Summary
This document presents a solution to a network routing and switching assignment (COIT20261) from Term 1, 2019. The assignment focuses on demonstrating knowledge of routing concepts. The solution addresses questions related to autonomous systems, inter-domain and intra-domain routing, and the comparison of routing protocols like BGP and OSPF. The solution defines key terms, provides examples, and discusses the functionalities of various routing protocols, including their similarities and differences. The assignment also considers the practical application of routing protocols in different networking scenarios, emphasizing the importance of packet forwarding in communication within and outside organizations. References from academic sources support the answers provided.

Question 3: (10 marks)
a) Mazal says an autonomous system in networking is a collection of
networks being managed or controlled under one administration or
management. A good example of an autonomous system is ISP. Internet
Service Providers offer internet service to various kinds of customers.
These customers have networks of their own to be managed by ISP. The
customer networks converge at the ISP premise. The ISP has to ensure
that there is communication between these networks and the external
networks. Therefore this forms an autonomous system. BGP is the
protocol used to achieve the work of forwarding packets from one
network to another (Mazal, 2018)

b) Bonaventure discusses an Inter-domain routing as the forwarding of
network packets between networks of different type. For example,
packets of network R whose routing protocol is OSPF are being
forwarded to network S whose routing protocol is EIGRP, the
communication between the two networks can be termed as inter-
domain routing. BGP is the primary protocol related to inter-
domain routing, (Bonaventure, 2019)

c) Intra-domain routing takes between networks of the kind. That is to say,
if network R whose routing is OSPF and network S whose routing
protocol is OSPF, the communication between the two networks is
called intra-domain routing.

d) OSPF and BGP will be our selected example of intra-domain and inter-
domain routing protocols respectively to be compared
The main dissimilarity between BGP and OSPF is that OSPF is an intra-
domain routing protocol and it uses link state routing the routing taking
place inside an autonomous system whereas BGP is an inter-domain
routing protocol which uses path vector routing and the routing activities
performed between two or more autonomous systems.
The similarity between the two routing protocols is that they both
support VLSM.

e) In the world of networking, we acknowledge that there exist a number
vendors/businesses who use different types of networks. They a given
type of network due their known good reasons. These networks have to
communicate within the organization and outside the organization. The
communication can only be achieved by forwarding of network packets
by use of a routing protocol. The routing protocol used will be
dependent on kind of network that was implemented. Hence, need for
different type of routing protocols
