NETWORK UPGRADING FOR COOKIE CO.
Introduction
Cookie Co. is known to be a well known cookie chain store. It has its business in the
entire country. It has faced certain issues like slow connectivity of data and unreliable as well as
distorted voice calls. This has become a challenging situation for the customers as well as the
staffs of Cookie Co. It needs to maintain a good reputation in order to carry out proper
functioning of its online retailing as well as the retail stores across the country.
This report discusses about a network infrastructure that would be appropriate for the
Cookie Co. in the future. This report gives a brief overview about the network convergence, LAN
types and transmission media. It also discusses about four network services that can be
deployed for the future growth of Cookie Co. This report also talks about the data storage as
well as data processing solutions and models. It recommends this infrastructure for the
betterment of the organization and for increased customer satisfaction level.
Discussion
Network Infrastructure
Network Convergence
Cookie Co. can utilize a single network for the purpose of provisioning communication
services in the organization. Network convergence integrates telecommunication, internet and
broadcasting services. Convergence will allow the company to effectively carry out the business
and interact with the society.
The core network needs of the company will be supported by the head office. The head
office will contain the main server that will contain six 2U rack of storage. This will promote
effective operations in the business. There will be a direct connection between the server and
the main switch. This will act as a bridge among several network components and devices. The
switch is supposed to have 1X24 connections. One port of the switch can pass through firewall
and be connected to router for accessing Internet. Another port can be used for wireless
connectivity. This port needs to comply with a standard called IEEE 802.11n. Another port can
be connected to the office LAN connection. The computer devices in the office can access
Internet via these ports.
LAN Type and Cabling Plan
Ethernet cable will be best suited for Cookie Co. This cable is similar to telephone cables
but has more number of wires. It will help to connect several devices within a LAN (Stephens et
al. 2012). The business computers, switches and routers will be easily and effectively connected
by using Ethernet cables. An Ethernet port that is present in a computer can be accessed via
Ethernet card present on motherboard. Ethernet cables are known for providing better

performance and effective protection against any electrical interference. These cables are
resistant towards cracks. The switch of Gigabit Ethernet will help the company to transfer files
easily and access critical applications in an effective manner (Rizzo and Lettieri 2012). This will
improve the productivity of the branches as well as the head office. Gigabit Ethernet switch will
enable multiple application to run simultaneously. Gigabit Ethernet will help the business to
grow as the Ethernet switch can also grow by making the most of the technology investment.
WAN Connection
WAN connections can be used for the purpose of connecting the branches and head
office across the country. ISDN can be used for the purpose of transmitting voice and video data
over the network (Bocker 2012). Dial-up Internet access can be used where the company can
utilize the facilities of PSTN for establishing connection to ISP. Cookie Co. can adopt virtual
private network or VPN for extending the private network to public network. This will help the
company to access intranet even when outside the office. It will allow remote access and it is a
cost effective solution for the company. The operations of the company will improve resulting
in high productivity.
Transmission Media
Optical fiber will be preferable for Cookie Co. It will provide network flexibility. The
communication across long distance will be facilitated by using optical fibers. Few repeaters can
be used for transmitting the signal (Miller 2012). It will help to save the spaces utilized in cable
ducts. A single fiber will be able to carry more data as compared to electrical cables (Barnoski
2012). This cable will facilitate secure communication in the office and across branches.
DNS and IP Management
Network management tools can be used for the purpose of DNS and IP management.
The IP addresses, MAC address and DNS can be managed by the address management tools.
OptUtils can be used for the purpose of monitoring the network. OptUtils can also be used for
DNS management that includes reviewing of host name, network status as well as lookups for
specified IP addresses.
Network Services
Cookie Co. can deploy VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol and wireless links for the
purpose of connecting the business to telecommunication networks. It will allow the business
to perform better and consume less power (Sinnreich and Johnston 2012). VoIP can be
implemented for the purpose of delivering multimedia sessions and voice communications over
the Internet Protocol like Internet. VoIP will allow the head office and other branches to
communicate in an easy and cost effective manner. This will help to improve the business
operations and productivity of the company. VoIP will provide flexibility that will allow the
branches as well as head office to collaborate in an effective manner. VoIP will allow the
business to exchange documents and files over a video conversation in an efficient manner

thereby increasing the operational efficiency of the business (Jelassi et al. 2012). Its strong
connectivity and good voice quality will facilitate undistorted voice calls. This will also help to
increase the level of customer satisfaction.
Cookie Co. can also deploy Intranet, Email and Extranet network services. Intranet will
enable the employees of the organization to access a network that is private to the company.
The internal information as well as services will not be disclosed to the public Internet (Neill and
Richard 2012). Intranet will improve the internal communication leading to better productivity.
It will improve the customer service by facilitating the staffs to access consistent and accurate
information about the customers. Extranet can be deployed by Cookie Co. Extranet will
facilitate the organization to extend its private network to an authorized group of customers as
well as suppliers (Rekhter et al. 2016). This will help the customers and suppliers of the
company to access certain information. Cookie Co. will be able to share the catalogs and menu
with their partners; it will help in the collaboration of the head office and branches. The overall
effectiveness of the business operations will improve. Extranet will help in increasing the
customer loyalty. Email services can be deployed by Cookie Co. for the improving the official
communication that occurs in the organization. This network service will enable the company
to communicate in a quick manner (Fariborzi and Zahedifard 2012). It will help to save paper as
the messages are sent electronically. The daily correspondence of the company can be
organized in an effective manner that will help to improve its operational efficiency as well as
productivity. Automated emails can be sent that will help the employees to save time. The
overall effectiveness of the company’s operations will improve by deploying Intranet, Email,
Extranet and VoIP services.
Data Processing Facilities
The data processing facilities can be divided into two parts called data processing model
and data storage solution.
Data Storage
The most feasible solution for Cookie Co. for storing data is the Cloud Storage model.
This service will allow the company to store and manage data from a remote location. It will
allow Cookie Co. to share resources over the Internet. The employees will be able to access files
and documents from any location by using Internet (Jadeja and Modi 2012). It will enable the
business to save operating cost of storage. The collaboration efficiency will improve by using
cloud services. The work practices will become flexible than before. Cloud storage will improve
business operations and will help Cookie Co. to grow and develop in the future. Distributed
database can also be adopted by Cookie Co (Kuhlenkamp, Klems and Röss 2014). This will help
to integrate and synchronize all the data in a logical manner so that it will improve the
operations and productivity of the company.
Data Processing
The P2P or Peer-to-Peer model of data processing will be suitable for Cookie Co. In this
model the computers can be connected to the central database or servers through LANs. In a
multiple peer model the computers can be connected with each other through servers. It will
