Betty Neuman’s System Model Theory Video
The reason why I chose this specific theorist’s video is because as a practitioner in
health, I wanted to understand more on the system model. It is one of the area topics that has been
fascinating and exciting to learn about, especially now that it is a model that is essential in the
practice of nursing in real life situation. Additionally, I was intentional in watching this type of
video since I wanted to understand the holistic and system based approach to nursing that has an
element of flexibility (Smith & Parker, 2015). Most of the renown approaches have the aspect of
complexity (Smith & Parker, 2015). With the focus on the patient system response, I was sure that
after watching the video clip I would understand the real potential stressors to the environment,
and the application of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention intervention in nursing for the
wellness of the patient's system on retention, attainment and maintenance (Neuman Systems
Model & Personal Application, 2015).
I believe that there is an excellent interconnectedness between not only living
organisms but also with the environment. When Betty Neuman explicitly explain in the video
clip what the system model is all about, I find a sense of meaning of why living people cannot
live independently and why they also need the environment to survive; environment determines
and contributes to a more significant percentage of the people's health (Neuman Systems Model
& Personal Application, 2015).
The theorist continues to describe a human being as ‘a holistic person defined by
five variables: they include spiritual, physiological, sociocultural, psychological and
developmental’ (Lowry & Aylward, 2015). She also explains the environment as all the forces
that internally and externally surround the client. This makes a lot of sense to me, especially as a

practising nurse. I solely agree with her school of thought especially now that she expresses the
relationship in a unique way that makes handling of patients very easy and appropriate.
One thing that surprised me in the video clip is a statement that seemed very light
yet very impactful. I never knew that the environment’s internal and external forces that often
affect an individual’s usual line of defence can affect the system stability. It astonished me to
recognize that by mere looking and observing the surrounding of the environment in which the
client or the patient comes from, can help predict the source and the cause of stability in an
individual body system. This then means that environment is very important and crucial factor in
an individual’s system.
I can readily recommend this video to my fellow students. It is one of the
exceptional videos that many people may assume and miss out on the essential message (s).
Because it has information that nurse students require, it is ‘a must watch’ video for any student
aspiring to become a nurse (Ahmadi & Sadeghi, 2017). Additionally, I would also recommend
this video to a fellow student so that I find out what would surprise them most in the video. It is
exciting to note that what surprises you might not surprise another person. Most of all, I would
recommend so that they also see the other side of the coin in the field of nursing; that it is not
just all about treating clients and patients but first understanding the surrounding in which they
come from (Lowry & Aylward, 2015).
I can confidently state that there is a substantial value that has been added in my
life and my professional life after watching this video. One, I have learnt that it is imperative to
understand that a patient should first be assessed through focusing on the actual stressors to the
patient; strength and the conditions of essential factors, and the energy sources; the reaction
degree and the body’s line of defense (Chao, Tahara, & Bahouth, 2019). Understanding the

interaction between the patient and the environment, and the general determination of life
process and factors that bring about optimal well-being is essential. Two, the nurse can now go
ahead to make a diagnosis by appropriately interpreting the collected data. The data in this case
may include the health-seeking behaviour, thermoregulation, among others. Third, the nurse can
then go ahead and set goals- keeping the client stable. Finally, an evaluation of the nursing
process should be performed to determine if restoration of the balance was successful and that
stable state has been maintained. In other words, I learnt that excellent nursing practice should be
comprehensive; it is not about judging from the first impression. It is not the first impression you
get from a patient that matters but the holistic approach does (Shen, 2015).
