Ethical, Legal and Professional Requirements
In Australia, a nurse must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of
Australia and meet the required standards of professionalism including minimum training in
both theory and practice from a recognized institution in order to practice within the
country’s borders(Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), 2017b). In class, I
learned and understood various professional standards that define the behavior and practice of
every nursing officer which include ethics, code of conduct and standard for practice.
Registered nurses are supposed to comply with International Codes of Ethics for Nurses
which include nurse’s primary responsibility is to provide nursing care to people, nurses must
demonstrate high levels of accountability, responsibility, standards of personal health,
personal conduct, and promote culture and ethical behaviors (Nursing and Midwifery Board
of Australia (NMBA), 2017b). Other than that I will be committed to maintaining
professionalism by implementing the required standards in clinical practice, education,
management, and research.
Ability to work as a Team
As a professional registered nurse, working as a team requires a variety of knowledge
and skills including professional standards in order to promote patient safety and quality care
(Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2017a). During my academic learning at the
university, I learned that the ability to work as a team requires me to establish professional
collaborations with other nurses and healthcare providers for a common goal. This include
collaborating with healthcare team in decision making about care of patient, maintaining
respect, dignity and transparency during communication with team members, understanding
the roles of the interdisciplinary teams and health service providers, demonstrating skills in

verbal, written and electronic communication, documenting as soon as possible any form of
group responses including communication and nursing interventions, regular consult
guidelines and policy from senior staff and demonstrates awareness in policy change during
team care(Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2017a). In addition, am also aware that
I am supposed to contribute both theoretical and clinical practice including nursing
interventions based on best practice available in-patient care while working with a team.
The function of a professional nurse in maintaining quality and safety care and
continuous improvement
In order for a nurse to continuously improve my practice and professionalism, I am
ready to use the best available evidence, nursing expertise and respect values of patients
during the provision of care(Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). For instance,
I learned in my academic and clinical practice the use of current research findings and
relevant literature to improve learning, participation in procedures, guidelines and policy
reviews basing on relevant evidence-based research, identify new information and relevant
changes in the nursing profession(Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). More
than that being familiar with the understanding that nursing practice expertise varies with
experience, education and the context of practice. Other than that, I well understood, in order
for me to ensure safety and quality care for the patient, I will be practicing my clinical
practice in relevant to current safety and quality standards as provided by the Australian
Institute of Health and Welfare 2018. This include involving in proper patient’s management
and healthcare governance, preventing and controlling hospital-related health infection
through implementing infection control and prevention methods, applying medication safety,
proper documentation and handovers, and effective management.

Though the review of NSW healthcare system, I have come to understand its four key core
values that will guide me into my professional practice. These include the following;
Collaboration- This core value suggests that NSW’s Health care promotes health care
members are supposed to collaborate willingly to provide quality and safe care. Other than
that, the health care teams should be seeking to contribute, improve, recognize and encourage
outstanding performances(NSW-HETI, 2017).
Openness- The NSW’s healthcare system foster cooperation’s and confidence through open
communication in order to encourage the community to trust their local health services. This
is done by encouraging open feedbacks for corrections and passing information to the
community with integrity(NSW-HETI, 2017).
Respect- All patients in NSW have a right to be treated with respect, compassion, and
dignity. This is encouraged through listening to patients and community, ensuring workplace
culture and performance is implemented, ensuring a zero tolerance to bullying, and
welcoming new ideas on how to improve patient care.
Empowerment-NSW healthcare support and innovation and local health decision making
promote accountability and responsibility and make use of available resources to meet
community and patients’ expectations(NSW-HETI, 2017).

Values
HNEHLDH is committed in the promotion of continuous building organization that
guides its values(HNELHD, 2018b). The local health district core values are guided by four
the NSW’s healthcare core values which include respect, collaboration, openness and

local health district expects all the employees to demonstrate these values while working in
order to create a proactive, healthy workplace and work culture. Hunters New England Local
Health District is committed to promoting collaborative work with each other to promote the
health of community and patients(HNELHD, 2018b). This includes taking responsibility as
for the contribution of the team to increase team performance, capitalising individuals
strength in a team to achieve required services, sharing knowledge, information and skills
within the team members, creating and maintaining both internal and external relationships ,
demonstrating ‘can do ‘ approach and creating supportive and natural environments that
reflects empathy to others(HNELHD, 2018b).
The local health district is also committed to openness in its communication in order
to promote greater cooperation and confidence by encouraging the people and patients to
provide feedback that helps in the provision of better services(HNELHD, 2018b). Other
values regarding openness include stating how they feel things in order to help others feels
their concerns, providing accurate and comprehensive information to people, and
communication in an open manner, transparently, and truthfully to build trust in the
workplace relationships(HNELHD, 2018b). In addition, the local health district has respect
for knowledge, abilities, achievements, and skills to all people who work in their health
system. This includes being empathetic, professional and polite in their staff to client
interactions, observing common curtsies, greetings and manners, treating individuals equally
and without prejudice and consistently working as a role model that demonstrate standards of
behaviors (HNELHD, 2018a).

HNELHD has developed a strategic plan setting priority to be accomplished by the
year 2021(HNELHD, 2018a). The local health district priorities are divided into six major
categories which include the community they serve, service delivery, workplace culture,
future position, experience and quality, patient safety. (HNELHD, 2018a). The local health
district seeks to deliver early interventions, disease prevention, and promote the health of the
community across the life span in order to support a healthy start of life. Other than that,
HNELHD has set priorities regarding improving equity access and service delivery and
enabling clinical engagement through networking to improve patient outcomes(HNELHD,
2018a).
HNELHD is also intending to improves patients experience of care, provide strong
clinical governance and corporate, and deliver effective, safe and appropriate healthcare. In
addition, the local health district is targeting to manage its services and resources
well(HNELHD, 2018a). This includes making use of the available resources to promote
sustainability and keep control and collaborating with the community as their partners to help
achieve health need. Other than that, HNELHD is proactively preparing plans that invest in
figurehead needs and encouraging new sustainable technology that will promote clinical
practice and research(HNELHD, 2018a). Lastly, HNELHD has set priorities in encouraging
and supporting its health workforce in excellence through developing, attracting, and
retaining capable and competent staff with required culture fit, supporting ethics and
accountability through the use of common goals and ensuring safe working
environment(HNELHD, 2018a).
