Report
AI Summary
This report examines the concept of smart cities, using Newcastle, Australia, as a case study to illustrate how engineering infrastructures are being utilized to improve urban living. The report highlights the implementation of smart technologies in the city, particularly focusing on energy efficiency and sustainable practices. The report mentions the adoption of smart street lighting systems, including the use of LEDs and dimming controls to conserve energy, reduce costs, and minimize carbon emissions. It references the Newcastle NSW Government and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7) to emphasize the importance of affordable and clean energy. The report also touches upon the broader context of smart city initiatives, including the integration of smart technologies in various sectors such as transport, energy, and overall liveability. The report aims to provide insights into the application of smart technologies in civil engineering to create more sustainable and efficient urban environments.

Smart Liveable Cities
The discussion is focused to introduce the Smart Liveable Cities concept with the help of
illustrative examples in relation to engineering infrastructures. While exploring the real-life
examples of smart cities in order to explore how global cities can be transitioned into the near
future, engineering infrastructures like liveability, water, energy, and transport will be taken
into main consideration. To do so, this discussion is focused on the chosen smart city such as
Newcastle, which is a port city of the popular Australian state New South Wales (NSW)
(Miller, 2017).
Here, the main engineering infrastructure smart examples for the following engineering
infrastructure fields will be provided:
Transport
Energy
Liveability
Water
Improved Energy in City of Newcastle
From the perspective of improved energy in the city of Newcastle, a smart street lighting
system has been established for conserving energy for all. Based on (United Nations, 2018),
as per the SDG7 set by United Nations, energy should be affordable and clean for all public
in the world hence the Gov. of the City of Newcastle has decided to ensure a sustainable
future of the world. This attempt includes solar farm, street lighting, bin sensors and
environmental monitoring which all come under smart engineering infrastructures.
In this context, the new smart street poles are saving energy with the help of these light-
emitting diodes (LEDs) as well as boast controls which enable lights to be dimmed whenever
not required. It has been observed that a smart street lighting system further reduces energy
use all across the world. I believe that this energy-saving system is smart because with the
help of this smart lighting system we can keep changing over already existing street lighting
to LED, which is allowing us to save more energy, money as well as carbon emissions.
