1DISCUSSION POST
In the philosophical theory of Newman, he mentioned that the relationship between
patients and nursing professionals develops in the situation of uncertainty, unpredictability and
disruption (Wright & Leahey, 2012). While receiving care within healthcare facilities, patients
are in trauma or tension of their illness, diseases and/or their disruptive state due to which they
develop an inner state of chaos which do not let them see their future clearly (Arnold, E. C., &
Boggs, 2015). In such situation, nursing professionals develops a relationship with their patients
and supports them with physical and mental interventions so that a clear insight of health and
wellbeing could be delivered to the patients. As per Smith & Parker (2015) Newman saw this
relationship as a connection between nursing professionals and patients as a thread that helps to
connect the past and future together.
While caring for Mr. Johnson in the cardio-vascular unit of the healthcare facility, the
patient was suffering from the symptoms of shortness of breath which increases the trauma and
tension in the family as well as the patient. In such situation, it was a difficult condition for me to
manage the patient’s condition and his families stress. However, as per the Newman’s
philosophical thinking, I started communicating with the patient and tried to calm his nerves so
that while receiving interventions he can accept those medications and interventions calmly,
which could enhance his health and wellbeing (Fawcett & Desanto-Madeya, 2012). Further, I
applied this theory while communicating with the patient so that these health supportive
activities could be carried to the home environment through the family members of the patients.
