Introduction
This is a reflective report based on the experience of the employee in NHS where the
collaborative, interpersonal and communication skills are used to interact in the
organization. The NHS organization requires great skills and qualities in the
employees to maintain the effective working and performance of the employees. The
employees are trained by the leaders and managers of the NHS will have to improve
and develop in the new recruits. The employees and staff of NHS should develop
great communication skills for their personal and organizational development.
Communication is important in every part of the organization to perform effectively
and efficiently.

Core Principles of Communication for NHS

Communication Theories and Models
Lasswell’s Model of Communication
The discovery of this communication model was done by the communication theorist
named Harold Lasswell in the year 1948. This model is considered one of the most
effective communication models and also regarded as the linear model or action
model. The key components of this model comprise the sender, message, receiver,
medium, and feedback. These components are basically utilized for the purpose of the
evaluation and analysis of the communication process. Although this model is also
adopted regarding interpersonal or group communication. In this theory, the theorist
mentioned the inter-relationship between the presentation of the facts and its different
effects being generated. This model has become non-linear due to the involvement of
the concept of efficiency in the theory since the effect can also be utilized as feedback
(Sapienza, et. al., 2015). This model faces criticisms for avoiding the possibility of
noise along with the non-inclusion of feedback.
Aristotle Communication Model
Aristotle was the first person who not only took an initiative but also developed the
model for effective communication. This model implies the fact that the key role in
communication has been played by the speaker. The founder of this model

emphasized the advice that the speaker should develop a speech for a different
audience on a different occasion for different effects. This shows that the key
elements of this model can be depicted as speaker, speech, occasion, time and effects.
Being the speaker centred model, this model emphasizes that the speaker has the
active role, the audience has a passive role that is affected by the speech delivered.
The main criticisms of this communication model comprise of lack of the concept of
communication failure, only applicable in public speaking, and absence of feedback
concept (Murthy and Gosal, 2016).
Berlo’s Model of Communication
This communication model was proposed by David Berlo in the year 1960 from
Shannon Weaver’s Model of Communication. This model is named Berlo’s Sender-
Message-Channel-Receiver (SMCR) communication model. This model mainly
emphasizes the concepts of encoding and decoding before the message sent by the
sender and received by the receiver in a respective manner. The key components of
the communication model are constituted as sender, message, medium, and receiver.
This model identifies the factors that influence the individual components of the
communication for the purpose of effective communication. The factors identified for
the sender are attitude, communication skills, social systems, knowledge, and culture.
The message is influenced by factors such as treatment, code, content, structure, and
elements. The communication channel is mainly affected by the five human senses
named touching, hearing, tasting, seeing and smelling (Bandhiya and Joshi, 2015).
This model implies that the factors affecting receiver are the same as that of the
sender. Mainly, this model is criticized due to the absence of feedback and similarity
between the factors of sender and receiver.

2. Reflect upon their own interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills
and identify areas for improvement.
Description
The NHS organization has many different activities and operations that are carried out
in it for the achievement of their goals and objectives. NHS also requires me to have
interpersonal, communicative and collaborative skills to perform effectively in the
organization. The organizations’ leaders and managers have to perform the task for
the development and motivation of effective communication in the management.
Effective communication is important in the organization to carry the tasks smoothly
and effectively and provide the benefits to society and people. The main aim of the
organization is to provide benefits to society and the public.
The interpersonal skills that are required in employees are:
Communication skills: Being the employee of the NHS, I should have effective
communication skills to perform the task better. The National Health Service
organization has to perform a different task that should be carried out effectively
to maintain the success of the organization. My communication skills also
involve the verbal and non-verbal communication between the employees and
management (Arnold and Boggs, 2015). The organization has to deal with
consumers and people which require effective communication skills to deal with.
The non-verbal communication skills also affect the understanding and functions
of the management. My listening skills should be effective to perform the task
well.
Emotional intelligence: The employees of NHS are required to control their
emotions in the organization as they have to deal with many consumers and third-
party people to interact with. I should have the emotional intelligence to deal with
the emotions of other people and gave an effective decision in the management.
The performance of the operations and research of the NHS should be dependent
on the skills and qualities, I have.
The team working: I should also have the team management and working skills
in the organization. NHS has to work in groups to perform the task and operations

of the society and people. The team working skills of my personality will help me
in accomplishing the goals and objectives of the company.
Conflict resolution and problem-solving: The organization also requires the
skills and qualities which are to be used in complex situations and problems in
the organization. The teamwork also requires to have better problem-solving
skills to maintain the performance.
I have made the reflective report on the model of Gibbs reflective cycle which
involves the five stages in their process. The Gibbs reflective model is concerned with
the reflection of the situation by evolving in different stages and coming with the
output.
Feelings
I have the feeling of very new to the social workplace which me to deal with new
people and management to perform the different tasks. The task performed in the
NHS should be managed properly to assist the public needs and demands. I have to
perform market research and other research in the health services of the organisation.
My communication skills were shaking at the time (Nørgaard, et, al., 2012). The
organisation has to perform any task that will require to provide health treatment to
the public in need.

Evaluation
My communication skills require development and training which should be provided
by the leaders and managers of the organization. My skills of collaboration were also
very low, I was feeling hesitated to interact with the people with the organization.
Analysis
The skills and qualities of the collaboration, communication and interpersonal skills
should be analyzed effectively to maintain personality development. It will help me in
personality development and skills development. The company goals and
achievements require to interact with many people and health-care centres(Moore, et,
al., 2018).
Conclusion
My collaboration and communication skills should be improved by the development
of the skills. My personal skills can be enhanced with the training and development
programs of the company. The NHS should provide various programs and plans to
have improved the skills of my personality
Action Plan
The communication and interpersonal skills can be improved through training and
development programs by the NHS organization. The training programs lead by the
leaders and managers of the organization should help to develop the skills and
qualities that will help in performing the work and task with effectiveness and
efficiency(Koprowska, 2014).

Areas of improvement
I have to improve my interpersonal skills and communication skills to effectively
perform the tasks and operations.
My interaction in the team and teamwork skills can also be improved with real-
time activities in the organization.
The collaborative skills will help me to perform the team tasks and performance.
The communicative skills will also help to achieve personal and organisational
goals.
These skills will help in problem solving and conflict resolutions.

Conclusion
This report concluded that the employee should have interpersonal, communicative
and collaborative skills which can be developed by the leaders and managers of the
NHS organization. The NHS has to maintain the work and performance of the staff
which are recruited new and need an introduction. The NHS organization has to
develop the skills and qualities of the employees through training and development
plans. The organization has to plan and develop strategies which can improve the
skills of their employees which will help them to manage and performs the activities
effectively. The communication plays an important role in the organization to achieve
the tasks and goals of the organization.
