Given an opportunity to design a universal healthcare system for my population, I would
consider the National Health System that has already been incorporated in United Kingdom as
seen in the video. The NHS system model provides free medical services to the citizens. The
system is to be funded by the government with funds obtained from taxation (Ferlie & Shortell,
2001). The rationale of this model is to ensure that each citizen, regardless of gender, age or
disability gets access to health care. Since this is a free model of care, no one is discriminated
and it will therefore cover children, the elderly and the disabled as well. They would be catered
by taxes generated from the working population.
The NHS system in England
Immediately after the Second World War in 1948, part of the revolution in the UK was the
adoption of the National Health Service (NHS).This healthcare model works through funds from
the federal governments that are obtained through taxation. The proportion of tax depends on the
income of an individual. The pool of resources available therefore makes it possible for delivery
of free and quality healthcare (Guest et al., 2015). However, the citizens are sometimes needed to
provide a small fee at the point delivery. One the advantages of the National Health system is
that the patients are able to get free but quality healthcare services. The disadvantage of the
National Health Service is that the wealthy are forced to pay or carter for other people
healthcare.
