NHS5004 - Collaboration, Communication, and Case Analysis for Master's Learners
Assessment 1 Response Letter
Dear Lynnette,
I would firstly, want to thank you for pointing out some very important facts and
information that is related to the issue that is being faced. I think that the evolving nature of the
healthcare sector and the new care requirements of the patients are making it much necessary
that innovative leadership practices are utilized towards developing better service standards. In
this regard my role in leading the group becomes very important in determining the effectiveness
of the process that needs to be developed for addressing the issue at hand. According to
Delmatoff & Lazarus (2014) it is important that more emotionally and behaviorally intelligent
leadership is formed to lead people in the healthcare sector. In relation with the same I want to
establish a leadership that is based on transformational and authentic leadership types. In this
case it is important that the diversity issues affecting both the employees and the patients are
addressed effectively. It is important that the employees are given much better training in regards
to customer handling. What is more important according to me is the development of cultural
competencies.
Firstly, it becomes much important to improve our hiring process. The existing healthcare
representatives can be trained on developing better relationships with the patients from diverse
cultures. However, it is also important that the organization hires people that are more competent
in the areas of relationship development. People with more cross-cultural knowledge and higher
levels of cross-cultural communication need to be hired. Secondly, better levels of leadership
standards need to be created (Embree et al., 2018). This is one of the main requirements as
leadership effectiveness would determine the success of the new process that is to be
implemented. Thirdly, we need to understand the cultural contexts that are very important in
view of the given scenarios. In this case, as you rightly pointed out, the majority of the patients
being treated are from the Haitian community. Hence, it becomes that the cultural aspects that
are very important for the Haitian patients are given much more importance. In all the cases mu
personal leadership style that combines elements of transformational and authentic leadership
need to be used to develop and effective way to address the cultural issues that are affecting the
operation of the hospital. Fourthly, I believe I would need to improve the communication levels
that exist between the healthcare employees and between the healthcare employees and the
patients. Better communication with the patients can ensure better levels of culturally efficient
services.
According to Okpala (2018) cost reduction strategies can be incorporated into the
leadership strategies of healthcare organization to improve the prospects of development.
Moreover, it is opined that patient based collaboration strategies lead to better quality healthcare.
I would like to utilize my transformational leadership strategy to optimize the internal working
environment. There is a need to celebrate diversity events that focus on assimilation of the
people from diverse cultures working with the organization. The Authentic leadership aspects
would be utilized to know the patients better. Haitian people are more family oriented and there
needs to be more importance provided to the families of the patients. The families need to be

always informed about the status of the patient’s health. It is important to develop a CSR
(Corporate Social Responsibility) strategy through which we can get in touch with the
neighborhood leaders and develop effective plans to reach the patients. There is a need to
develop bi-linguicism. The medical staffs need to be aware of the language of the Haitians.
The strength of this approach is that an optimally effective cultural environment would be
created for the employees as well as the patients. At the same time the organization would be
able to utilize the leadership standards to make the workers better ready for the challenges. One
of the main weaknesses of the approach is that the entire process would be expensive and
lengthy. A budget need to be set aside for all the intended changes to be made. The
interdisciplinary team members would need to be trained on the required competences that
become important to move further.
The second part of my response is in regards to the facilitation of the collaboration to
maximize the effectiveness of the team. Firstly, one of the most important requirement is
communication technology. The ICTs (Information and Communications Technology) need to
be utilized in this case for intra organizational communication. Additionally, there is a need for
incorporating the patient information with the ICTs that would be used. The alignment of
technology with useful information would help to improve the way in which the patients would
be served. Secondly, the accountability functions need to be improved. The practices would
involve better decision making. The decisions need to be taken by the leader and the senior
members of the group. One important form of decision making that can be utilized is
brainstorming and logical thinking (Top Ten Traits of Great Leaders, 2020). Thirdly, another
important aspect is the technique for sharing information. It is important that an effective
technique is utilized where knowledge becomes central in all the decisions that are being taken.
The sharing of cultural, patient oriented and treatment knowledge need to be randomized.
The development of effective leadership depends greatly on effective communication. It
is important to develop communication standards that can help the internal workers to
communicate effectively among themselves. At the same time it is important that the
communication with patients are also improved. This would follow better decision making and
progressive cross-cultural functions. It is important to develop better competencies. Decision
making should be done only by the more experienced members of the groups that would be
involved. All decisions made need to be approved by the senior leader.
