MAIN BODY
The city of Nicosia is a uniquely built up city and is surrounded within walls. The
walled city is or the old city area is not too convenient for bus rides and at times car rides.
Cultural Tourism and in recent times health and sports tourism has been in focus in Nicosia.
The idea is that these particular aspects of tourism are niche sectors and can be then used to
foster the growth of tourist infrastructure in the internal city. Folklore experts, Culture
enthusiasts are able to manage in the city with the accommodation through rentals or
university hostels. The only airport in Cyprus , though is close to Nicosia and is a 50 minute
bus ride the non availability of hotel based hospitality services is felt as the city has less
popular ways of accommodation for tourists.
The local governance is trying to popularise an app based moto – ride system in place of the
same. Mass transport system is thus, largely non – existent except the bus facilities to
Nicosia. On the lines of moto- rides the local mini bus system is also getting upgraded for the
convenience of the tourists. Most of the tourist trends show that the people in and out of the
walled city prefer walking on feet and it has not been much of a hassle. The only larger
concern here is that the system is well suited for a solo or duo trip rather than a group venture
with reduce d accommodation and group transport facilities.
The overall accommodation capacity is already low and an added burden of tourist hosting
though is well accepted in the area but not quite at a large scale. Only a few of the places in
the city have adequate infrastructure to cater to all the needs of the tourist.
The absence of a well organised and suitable mass transport network particularly for the
purposes of tourism is not there as mentioned but the needs of the city travel within the
walled area haven’t been difficult as per the trends of the tourist. Although, the presence of
same would be a plus to boost the overall scheme of tourism an absence is seldom called in
question with the presence of friendly hosts and shorter walks. The streets are narrow with
bicycle as a popular option which shall be improved necessarily as the same is not only eco –
friendly but also a part of the regular life and thus, not an issue with the local culture. These
efforts require a cooperative approach at the levels of local and national governance with due
inputs from the locals about their perceptions and needs, The large deficiency of mass
hospitality can be taken up through heritage hospitality in the walled city by the locals
themselves instead of bigger plans.

Long staying tourists haven’t really been appreciated by the locals and there is a tendency of
negative stance. These are present due to the effects of demographic change and socio –
cultural needs of the city. It can be concluded that the accommodation is low and so are
transport facilities. The walk and bicycle system need an upgrade. A possible introduction of
motor rides is a possibility. Cooperation at local level is the need of the hour to boost the
hospitality in the walled city.
