Rising Action and Impact of Studying Abroad
The purpose of this narrative essay is to entertain the readers with reflection of my experiences
while studying abroad. Many people have their different stories based on their reflection, so the
essay is going to analyse the rising actions and impact of studying abroad on a native of Nigeria.
Back then in Western Africa, the culture and living is entirely different than United States.
People of Nigeria are fun loving and happy people who believe in living together and sharing
responsibilities. I adopted friendly nature from the culture of Nigeria itself that further helped me
to initiate my educational growth in host nation. Optimistic approach helped me in easily
involving in the US culture. Whereas, the culture and behaviour of people of US is entirely
different from the West African people. The people of US are self- centred and self-dependent as
well. The life of US is runs with a great pace that gives no option to other people to involve in
the lives of US native.
Even after knowing that I will face many issues due to difference in culture, I was persistent that
I wanted to go and study abroad because of my personal skills and capabilities. I believe that no
person should hold back their abilities to shine just because they belong to a different culture.
Along with education, studying abroad provides various other experiences as well that a person
can never have will living at their native place. Studying in a foreign country helped me to get to
know people with different personalities. It also helped me in settling down with the truth that
not everybody you meet should like you. It is important to analyse the behaviour of people and
find out the true ones out of them. Even in educational setup, I found few people who snatch the
work of other people and make them feel inferior so that they can excel in the class. It was
difficult to overcome from all such situations while living alone.

Foreign land has always been an adventurous place for me. More than hardships I faced many
challenging situations that made me a person who I am today. Studying was easy for me, I used
to excel while living at my native place and now also I do not face any difficulty in passing.
However, I have not come here to pass instead I have come here to grow, learn and excel
whatever I do. My biggest strength is my persistent and focused behaviour that greatly helped me
to study abroad and educate myself. It would be wrong to say that I didn’t face any problem
while studying but my focused approach helped me to look for gains more than pain. Due to
difference my culture and appearance during my course many people made biased comments on
me. Acknowledging such behaviour of people at an initial level gave me culture shock that
reduced my enthusiasm and passion to study abroad. It is not easy to face harsh comments about
your native community.
But somehow, I believed in myself that I am more than what these people think about me and no
person in the world can put me down except myself. I can say that my educational weakness is
trusting people easily. During my course, I faced betrayal of many people just because I trusted
them easily. But now I have realized that the only person who can help me in sustaining in such
difficult circumstances is just me. I have to work on my weaknesses and convert them into
strengths. According to me, I learned and gained experience through real life circumstance by
living in a host country. Education was merely a way to lead me to such experiences but I gained
such experiences and developed strengths and capabilities by interacting with people and
analysing their behaviour.
Thus, in the limelight of above mentioned events, the fact should be noted that the above
mentioned narrative essay explained my personal experiences that I faced while studying abroad.
Having difference in looks, culture and habits, people made biased comments on me that for

once led my growth down. But soon after that I realized that, ‘No one can make you feel inferior
without your consent’. Now I believe in myself and I know that what people are thinking about
me is none of my business but I am thinking about me is the point of concern.
