The concept of night time economy refers to activities ranging from leisure to collective
night time social and entertainment which comprises of the creative arts, eating, and drinking
(Talbot, 2016). The factors that influence the economy negatively when it operates overnight
will, therefore, be analyzed according to social, cultural, and material effects that it possess to the
Parramatta city. As a result, this paper will provide a recommendation on how to enhance the
night economy in the city of Parramatta without negatively influencing the national economy of
Australia.
Negative Impacts of Night Time Economy in Parramatta City
Economic Impact
Parramatta city is a contemporary city that is governed by economic forces such as
consumption pattern. However, the main aim of the nighttime economic activities, for example
in the Parramatta city clubs and hotels is to promote residential and commercial consumption of
hard and soft drinks. However, governing the economic environment of the Parramatta city is a
paramount goal that the City management must maintain. The Council City Management of
Parramatta has managed to station an approximately 170 storm-water pollution devices in the
Parramatta City which includes gross pollutant devices and litter baskets. However, there has
been increased litter pollution with the City Council managing to collect approximately 125
tonnes from the pollution catchment areas (Council, 2013).
As a result, the excessive consumption of drinks overnight leads to dirtying of the city
spaces thus results in city pollution. This impacts the life of the citizens who works daily for the

economic sustainability of the city in terms of health issues. In addition, increase in the
insecurity due to lack of street lights will expose the city of Parramatta as a dangerous
destination for the local and international tourists hence minimizes the total output from the hotel
and service industry.
Cultural Impact
During the night time economy in the city of Parramatta, hosts of citizens are exposed to
unhinged job markets which lead to welfare dependency for the night workers. These citizens,
however, understand the city centers including the memorial city areas such as Church Street
pedestrian mall and Prince Alfred Park which have been put under economic pressure to be
turned in to economic hubs (Barns and Mar, 2018). As a result, the protection of these
mainstream cultural hubs has been declining due to changes in the priorities of the night
economies.
Social Impact
Night time economies in Parramatta city has been met with increased social crimes
including rapes, killings, and night thefts. As a result, social crimes are closely related to alcohol
consumption that most citizens take from the night pubs. This is because in the late night, large
premises in the Parramatta city drawn people from different backgrounds with the mentality of
enjoying themselves but turns out to face physical confrontations thus leading to the night
violence. In a bid to end physical confrontations due to alcohol fuelled violence in Parramatta
city and Sydney CBD, the government passed a city-wide lockout laws that requires 1.30am
lockouts with the last alcohol drinks to be by 3am in all pubs, bars and night clubs.

According to Gotsis and Dobson (2014), across the New South Wales which comprises
of Sydney and Parramatta city, between 2014 to 2018, the was an increased record of sexual
assault rising from 3.4% to 4.3% with a stable increase in other social crimes such as murder and
theft. This was impacted by the increased nighttime economic activities that promote the dark
side trend effects of social life. Even though there are increased cases of social crimes, there are
increased exaggerations of the incidences by the media with least reported cases of police
assaults in the Parramatta city.
Increase in Illicit Drug Usage
Night time economy in the Parramatta city has contributed to increasing the use of the
illicit drug among the youths who spend much of their time in the pubs and dark areas. As a
result, health wisely the younger population ability to provide for the needed physical
productivity output depletes with time thus leads to a negative impact on the economic
development of the city. Keeping people safe during night time economic activities requires
more than just zero tolerance since the police patrol expenditure overnight will have to increase
in order to fight the use of illicit drugs among the citizens.
Conclusion
Even though the Parramatta City has been one of the major Cities in Australia that foster
night-time economies, this growth should be balanced in a sustainable and responsible manner so
as to minimize the negative impacts on the economic, cultural, and social growth of the city. As a
result, implementation of the lockout laws within the Parramatta City is essential to reduce the
night time economic disadvantageous due to excessive drinks.
